7 Ways to Love Yourself

Posted on January 11, 2012

Why is it some people need more inspiration than others? I find myself constantly having to motivate someone else. It’s not that I mind doing this, but rather it perplexes and concerns me.  I think about my grandparents. They grew up during one of the toughest times in this country – the depression era.

It wasn’t easy and they didn’t quit on life. They accepted the things they couldn’t change and made the best of the situation, doing whatever it took to survive.  How is it today people fail to be self-reliant with their own emotions?

What’s the best thing you can do for yourself?

The Bible tells us to love thy neighbor as thy self. Love is a deep emotion connection we all need. If you don’t like yourself very much, then how can you be happy or how do you really begin to love another?

With feelings of unworthiness, you must learn to accept yourself for who you are. None of us are perfect.  God loves you with an everlasting love just the way you are. That’s comforting and powerful – He loves you with an everlasting love!

How do you love yourself? Here are 7 Ways!

1. Surround yourself with friends who are morally good.  You’ve heard the saying, “There’s no honor among thieves”. Don’t choose people who are out to hurt you. With friends like this, then who needs enemies, right? Avoid negative people like a plague!

2. Get a job (or a hobby) – idle hands are the devils’ playground. This can be translated literally or more commonly apathy sets in. Depression is the new idle hands of Satan. Don’t be fooled!

3. Do something special just for you every day. Taking care of yourself will make you not only feel good, but to have a greater appreciation for others. Relax, have fun, and enjoy life!

4. You have only one life, one body. Avoid harmful substances – alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.  Treat yourself well with exercise and good nutrition – your body is a glorious temple!

5. Say good-bye to self-criticism and worry and say hello to being kind and positive! We’re often the hardest on ourselves than anyone else, which leads to anxieties. Trust your abilities and forgive yourself when you make goofs with affirmations of “I’m uniquely made by the Master and I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

6. Daydream. There is nothing wrong with nurturing your dreams. This enables you to love the life you have been given. Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than the by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

7. Walk with God daily. Look to Him for direction in your life. In His presences you can’t help, but to love yourself. For God so loved the world… this definitely includes you, wouldn’t you say?

Words to ponder on by Virginia Satir…

“I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine, because I alone chose it — I own everything about me: my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions, whether they be to others or myself. I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears. I own my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes.

Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with all my parts. I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know — but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me.

However, I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at any given moment I’m authentically me. If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought, and felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and reinvent something new that I discarded. I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me. I own me, and therefore, I can engineer me. I am me, and I am Okay.”

Because I love myself, I will do something good for myself today. Follow me to Hopping  Along Wednesday – Blog Hop Style!

I enjoy your thoughts. The last part about “I am me” sure comes with a whole lot of accountability doesn’t it? Throws the victim mentality right out the window!
