6 Heart Songs from the 70s #RMF

This is the second annual Roctober Mewsic Festival hosted by Mary from Jingle Jangle Jungle and I’m happy to join along with her in the fun.  I always considered myself a soft rock to middle of the road rock gal but in the last 10 years, I realized that my rock n’ roll roots lean a little heavier and harder than I first thought.  This month, I’m revisiting some of the classic 70s bands that I loved as a preteen/teenager and you’re welcome to come along for the ride.

I invite you to hit play to enjoy the set as we listen today to 6 Heart songs from the 70s.

The first three songs I remember quite well but the last two are new to me which I discovered in my search. I really liked them.  The 1975 song titles are from Heart’s Dreamboat Annie debuted album.  🎸Crazy On You (1975); peaked #36 US Billboard Hot 100 charts the summer of 1976. 🎸Magic Man (1975) became Heart’s first US top 10 hit peaking #9 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.  🎸Barracuda (1977) from Little Queen album; spent 20 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts peaking at #20. 🎸How Deep It Goes (1975) is Heart’s first released singe but got very little attention in Canada under the small record label. It wasn’t until after their second release, Magic Man, backed with this song did Canadian radio station picked it up. 🎸Heartless (1977) released as a single after the reissue of Crazy On You.  The song hit the 24th spot on Billboard Hot 100.  Heartless and 🎸Without You were the only two singles to come from the band’s Magazine album.

Did you know this band was once known as The Army, White Heart, and Hocus Pocus? The group finally settled going by simply Heart in 1970. Another interesting factoid about this American rock band is they first became popular in Canada. The group lost their mojo beginning in 1980 but made a successful comeback in the mid-80s. The band is currently on hiatus and at some point, I think I need to give their newer song titles serious consideration. Who knows maybe I’ll do Whatever Happened post on Heart.

Before I scat, let me reveal the winner of my Oct. 1st ‘I (Who Have Nothing) BoTB showdown.  It was a tight race practically from the start. At one point, Cocker pulled of Bassey with a two-point lead but then a couple of straggling voters came in leveling the playfield again. I hate to say it, folks, we have ourselves a tie 7-7. Here’s how y’all pitched your votes.

Shirley Bassey –  Tom, Mary, John, Lee, Sandee, Birgit, & Mimi

Joe Cocker – Debbie, Janet, Stephen, Cherdo, Amy, Mike Spain, & Eugenia

I gave up throwing in my vote a long time ago. After all, I picked the artists I enjoyed best to put in my battle and figured my people would decide who earns the golden mic award. 😉 Thanks to everyone for making it an interesting showdown. For newbies, there’s another battle slated for Oct. 15th. Visit Stephen for the complete list of BoTB participators to check out more showdown results or request to join the party.

I hope you’ll travel with me back in time tomorrow with another edition of Rocktober Mewsic Festival!

    1. Eugenia,

Thanks for sharing the link to Heart’s tribute to Led Zeppelin. It looks like they enjoyed the girls’ performance judging by their expressions, don’t you think? They did a good job covering it.

    1. Mimi,

Thanks for joining me. I’d like to say this has been a good week but I’ve been mostly out of it with this head stuff and have barely held things together. I’ve just gone through the motions basically. Thankfully, today I’m doing better since I didn’t take any Mucinex last night. That stuff makes me VERY loopy!

  1. The eighties were my decade of ages 10-20, but I remember all those Heart songs from the 70s! Many prefer them to the Heart of the 80s, but I must confess, I LOVE 80s-era Heart a bit better. I’m not sure if it’s because it was made when I was really into music, or if I just prefer it to their 70s songs – Heart is a fantastic band no matter which decade, though.

    1. Kim,

From the mid-70s to mid-80s Heart mewsic blurs for me. I think it’s because of when my mewsic exposure began or at least I took more notice of their stuff in 1979. They do have some great 80s hits but since I’m keeping with the 70s I had to rule those out for this time. Maybe, next year. 😉

  2. Heart is one of my favorites. I don’t talk about it much, but I had a bf that had gotten himself into some trouble with the law. He would call me from the jail and ask me to play one of their songs while we chatted. I was really happy to see the girls put their family feud aside and start touring again.

    1. Robin,

Yes, I’m enjoying everyone’s entries for this month’s challenge. I’ve been off-kilter for the last few days but I’m gaining speed again. Thanks for joining me!

  3. Heart is great. We’ve seen them a few times. Glad to hear they are together again. They had a fight a few years ago, as sisters can sometimes do.

  4. You and me both with BOTB ties. I’m okay with that. You had a good match.

Recently I was listening to some of my late younger brother’s Heart CD’s and reminded of how good they really were. Great group.

    1. Lee,

Yeah, I noticed that you and I tied in this round. I think John mentioned a few others who had the same outcome. I’m still trying to catch up this week. So, I eventually get to everyone. I’m glad you came by to listen to my Heart playlist and to know that you like them.

  5. When you have a tie then you have chosen two really good videos. Fun.

I love Crazy on You. I so remember that song.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

  6. Thanks for sharing your BOTB results, Cathy. You picked a couple of good ones!

Heart is one of my favourite bands! 💖 We just saw them in July (it was our 4th time since 2011) and I’m happy to say, 69-year-old Ann and 65-year-old Nancy are in fine form, proving once again, that age is just a number. 😎

    1. P.S. Ann and Nancy broke up temporarily, a couple of years ago, due to a family feud, but reunited earlier this year, hence the new tour.

    2. Debbie,

That’s cool you got see Heart in concert. There were incredible back in the day and am glad to know that they still have the right stuff to put on a show. I do believe I saw that the girls reunited after a falling out. Thanks for dropping by!

    1. Rain,

Oh, what fun memories! The decade when girls still dressed like girls and looked so pretty. Have you noticed the horrible decline in how women present themselves in public these days? They’ll go to the grocery store in their spandex exercise pants and jog bras with a baggy backless t-shirt. Generally speaking, I find that men take better care of their appearance than women on average. That’s just shameful if you ask me. Oops, didn’t mean to rant there! So glad you enjoyed the Heart playlist. 😉

  7. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Tuesday, dear friend! I admire your eclectic taste in mewsic, the fact that you can tolerate and even enjoy, albeit in small doses, rock that skews harder and heavier. Those first three Heart songs are 70s rock classics. Unlike certain other popular recordings of the decade I could name, they have stood the test of time and still sound fresh, not dated. This is the first time I ever heard Heart’s first single, the Canadian release “How Deep It Goes.” It is a beautiful light/soft rock song, one that deserved a good run on the chart. I see that it was released in April 1975, three months before the band’s debut album Dreamboat Annie hit store shelves and they exploded in popularity. Mrs. Shady #1 and I owned the album but I simply don’t recall that lovely track “How Deep It Goes.” I suppose we paid more attention to the hit songs at the time. I also well remember the single “Heartless,” another great song by the Wilson sisters. I am also excited to hear for the first time Heart’s cover of the 1970 Badfinger song “Without You.” Heart did a terrific job of making it their own.

In 1985 Heart released their eighth studio album and enjoyed their greatest success as a mainstream rock act. At the time I was working at the MTV station. From that Heart album I selected the song and music video “What About Love” to use in a presentation promoting our station to advertisers. Later I used “These Dreams” as the mewsic bed for one of my commercials.

Thanks for reporting the result of your band battle. To me a tie is the perfect way for a BOTB to end because it demonstrates that you were skilled in picking two worthy and evenly matched contestants.

I thoroughly enjoyed this morning’s Heart concert. Have a great day, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

I don’t know if I remember Heart from the 70s as much as I do the 80s, even the songs I shared here I originally thought came out of the 80s. I might have this all wrong in my head as time really plays tricks on me and I might have heard these songs in my high school years but forgot. I think the reason I think the way I do is by mid-1979, we got married and moved to Knoxville where I was able to listen to the radio more. You might recall me saying at my childhood home we had a poor radio signal so I didn’t listen to on the air content unless I was in the car with my folks. In those early days, DH was the one who was the most in tune with mewsic and did a lot of channel surfing to pick up the sounds that he liked exposing me to a whole new world of mewsic. So, whether or not I heard Heart for the first time the last year of the 70s or not, that’s close to the 80s and I guess that’s the reason for my confusion. It was fun doing the research and learning about the group. I’m happy that I got on board with Mary this month to play along in RMF!

I guess you’re right about the tie. You can’t get any tighter than that for the competition. It used to bother me if I didn’t have a clear winner but really there’s no reason that it should. Your point is valid so I should pat myself on the back, right? 🙂

Thanks for joining me for the Heart concert, my friend. You’re Da-bomb!

  8. I like Heart very much but didn’t know they had tried out other names.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Janie,

I wonder if more groups did this sort of thing in their early years until they found what suits them best and we just don’t know about it? Thanks for joining me!
