2019 The Little Mermaid #art sketch series ‘SEBASTIAN & SCUTTLE’ #AtoZChallenge

Thanks for joining in today.  Are you here for the April blogfest, then keep reading or if not and you’re looking for my 4M mewsic, then you’ll find that here!

Previous posts in The Little Mermaid Artsketch series can be found easily under Latest Mews in my side menu.  ☞ ☞ ☞

This is the last full week in April. There’s nothing slow about this month. It’s disappearing streaking fast! With that, we’re on the letter ‘S’ which immediately brought to mind two characters for today’s sight-only with no instructions illustration, Sebastian and Scuttle.

Sebastian is a Jamaican crab who serves King Triton as his right hand-fish and is tasked to keep Ariel out of trouble. Good luck with that, I say.  He’s also the under the sea mewsic composer and performer.  In my second BoTB this month, I used ‘Under the Sea’ sang by voice-over actor Samuel E. Wright.

Scuttle is a silly seagull who’s the resident know-it-all but in truth knows very little especially on matters regarding the human world. When asked what a fork is, he called it a ‘dinglehopper’ which is used for combing the hair.

Do you care to take a guess who the voice-over actor is for Scuttle?  If you don’t know, then don’t feel bad because I didn’t either and found it interesting to learn that it’s the voice of Buddy Hackett.

Don’t forget to leave a breadcrumb (direct post URL) in comments so I might find my way easily to you. I have a dental appointment today but not to worry I’ll do return visits early in the morning.  I’m heading off to link up with other fellow AtoZers. You’re invited to come along and be sure return tomorrow for the next installment in my Little Mermaid Artsketch Series! X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. These two characters I actually knew. Buddy Hackett was a nightclub comic, but he had a pretty extensive acting career, mostly in family-type movies.

  2. Hi Cathy,
Enjoy visiting your AtoZ posts. It is so much fun. Love the video you post and it so good to relive each of these lovely childhood moments. It feels I never want to grow up…😁😁
Great Job on drawing scuttle and Sebastian without tutorial.
I will try to use dinglehopper to style my hair… he he he 😂

Read my S post here SHE

    1. Kislaya,

I don’t want to grow up, either. You’ll soon find that having kids keep you young at heart a bit longer. I betcha have a whole drawer of dinglehoppers. Grab one now and style your hair! lol

    1. Jade,

I can’t help but think of Sebastian & Scuttle when this movie comes to mind, especially Scuttle. Although his role isn’t huge in the original flick his presences stays in the mind long after! 😀

    1. Trudy,

Sebastian and Scuttle have different purrsonalities and adding real character to the film. I’m always surprised to read of big name actors/actresses who do voice-overs for Disney movies – amazing!

  3. Okay, first of all thought I’d tell you our star Conductor didn’t do her 4M today… she has last week’s stuff, which is no biggie cuz it’s Freebie week, but me I have to start looking at dates. It’s a waste of time. Also, I’ve been waiting all week for sebastian… love him the most and his tune “Under the Sea”! Woo Hoo GREAT JOB MY FRIEND! Sebastian is so cool. Now you have 2 this week. Sebastian is fabulous. A dingle hopper! bwahahaha You done a great job on him too! Also, need to tell you your twitter thing isn’t working. I always tweet what you have and this one isn’t tweeting 🙁 Luv ya girl – great fabulous job today! BIG HUGS!

    1. Marie,

It seems Kim had some issues with her site and perhaps still does. I visited her earlier and wanted to leave a comment but it’s not letting me. I will shoot her an email letting her know if it doesn’t correct itself in short order. 😉 I’m confused as to what you’re referring to being a waste of time checking the dates or freebie week or both? lol It’s too early this morning. I’ve been awake since 2:30 am — too much on my mind for sure! I knew from the start that I wanted to try my hand illustrating both of these characters but I wasn’t sure how I’d work it until I got to the letter prompt at which time I just slide right into place knowing precisely what to sketch. Thanks for visiting, my dear!

  4. Two of my most favorite Disney characters. I did know it was Buddy Hackett and his dinglehopper is the best! Wonderful job portraying them.

    1. Janet,

You’re the third person to say you knew it was Buddy. I think I recognized the voice but never put two and two together, so the discovery of the character’s identity was fun.

  5. It’s been such fun to revisit this classic. I love your sketches. You’re most talented. I can draw stick figures and they aren’t very good.

Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

It all begins with the basics. Stick people are a purrfect start! DH draws very good (quite cute) stick people. I think I shared this with you before, right? Thank you for your encouragement. It means so much to me! 😘

  6. I love how the seagull’s name is Scuttle! It’s just so fitting. Ariel goes to him for all the gossip haha you’ve done a great job capturing their likenesses!

    1. Howdy! Scuttle’s name does seem to suit him, doesn’t it? I like how his silliness is never taken seriously by the audience, no one is offended or put off by his character. Everyone knows that he’s a know-it-all who knows nothing about the human world. 🙂 That’s why we love Scuttle!

      1. Hehe yes totally! Whenever I hear his name I just think of “scutbutt” being rumours on a naval ship, so scuttle is spreading the scut haha it’s so great

        1. Giggling,

I read that Scuttle’s full name is Scuttlebutt which isn’t known before the TV series. That’s a strange sounding. I prefer his shortened name. 🙂

    1. Jacqui,

That’s ok, you don’t have to leave a message. Of course, the only way I know when someone’s been by is when I see a comment. During April, I rarely go off to my usual hops because of time restraints. You know what I’m talking about. I’m amazed how some still manage to hold their normal blogging scheduled throughout the challenge while including the additional A2Z post each day. That amazes me and makes me envious. I mean, why can’t I be that organized? It’s just not going to happen and I happily accept my limitations. 🙂 Thanks for visiting me, my friend. 😉

  7. I knew it was Buddy Hackett before I read below. The song is great and enjoyed listening to it. Seeing both, you captured their personalities very well in your fun drawing. I really like this one

    1. Keith,

As much as I love mewsic, classical I don’t know much about other than I do recognize Handel and Sebastian by name. I can’t tell you what they’ve written or what I like best by them but I know it when I hear it; not necessarily knowing who wrote what or even if they are the composures. Did I hopelessly lose you on that explanation? 🙂 But…I do like humor – very cleverly weaved into your response to my illustration. Thank you for the compliment and I’m happy that my drawing makes you thinking happy. That’s not a bad connection. I hope my sketches do just that make others happy. Have a great day, my friend!

  8. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Monday and “S” day to you, dear friend! You did a fine job of drawing Sebastian the crab and Scuttle.the wacky know-it-all seagull and doing the sketches sight-only – with no instructions illustration. Both animal characters are drawn accurately and the composition of the sketch implies motion. “Under the sea mewsic composer and performer” is good work if you can get it. 🙂 Scuttle reminds me of comedian Stan Kann, the vacuum cleaner collector who appeared on The Tonight Show 77 times and demonstrated various gadgets, explaining what each was intended to do. None of the gizmos worked properly and the recurring segment was hilarious. As I watched the scene from the movie where Scuttle does his best to explain the function of the fork and pipe to Ariel and Flounder, I immediately recognized the voice of Scuttle as that of veteran comic Buddy Hackett. This was before I read your text beneath the clip confirming that it was indeed Buddy. I know Buddy’s voice well from his own numerous appearances on The Tonight Show and from his featured role in one of my favorite movies It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter, dear friend Cathy, and I wish you a happy week ahead!

    1. Tom,

I didn’t watch a lot of The Tonight Show when I was younger. I always had a hard time staying awake. I’m not a night owl even though on occasion we’ll stay up late. I do mornings easier. I can’t say that I remember Stan Kann’s skit on the show but I’m sure I caught it at least once. I’ll have to check YT to see if any are available. I loved Johnny Carson as the host! He was good looking deadpan at the camera with his comic lines or comebacks to guests which made it so hilarious! I’ve seen Buddy Hackett in a few things including ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World’ but I certainly did not make the connection. Bravo to you for knowing right off. 🙂 Yes, thank you we had a nice Easter. I hope you and Mrs. Shady did as well. I imagine y’alls weather is getting warm now because ours is. Have a good week and thanks for stopping by for a visit, my friend!
