I mentioned early on that characters are limited for some of the alphabet letters with ‘P’ being no exception. The website I used while composing my drawings and post shows only two characters one by name and the other the mother of that character with no name given. Today’s illustration is from the LM TV series, Pearl.
Who is Pearl? She’s a young, spoiled mermaid who’s parents rule with a hands-off policy and she pays her brothers to carry her around like royalty. With that kind of parenting, it’s only natural that Pearl misbehaves hoping to get her parents’ attention. This is so true to life. Kids who aren’t governed what that discipline and those who get it hate their parents for it. How can things be so screwed up? Anyhow, after uploading my image, it occurred to me that either my characters are out of proportion or these guys are just really big compared to Pearl. What do you think?

And here I thought there was some social commentary about the big and hulking henchmen and tiny bosses in mob movies… But if you think the characters are out of proportion, that’s your call 😉

Discipline shows love..my mom in law said this and I so agree. Many kids nowadays, feel quite entitled and are too dependent which is not good for their future. They are a bit out of proportion, I agree, but you are learning and you have the bodies right and their faces are great. That girl needs a spanking.
Birgit,
I agree Pearl needs a spanking and so do 99% of the youngsters today. Sometimes discipline means getting your fanny busted. I was happy with how the bodies and faces turned out. In time, I’ll get the proportion factor more accurate. I suppose in art class there’s an easy lesson to help students learn how to get it right whereas I’m winging it from a sight-only perspective and it’s not until after I have it sketched that I see my goof. So, I remind myself of the way to Carnegie Hall…practice, practice, practice! 🙂
That’s very well done
That turned out so good!!!

Now you come to mention it those guys are pretty big – or Pearl is simply a little cutie! Either way, they look happy to carry her and she’s clearly enjoying the ride!

Keith,
Maybe, it’s a little of both – big brothers & a cutie pie for a sister! 🙂
Hi Cathy,
Beautiful sketch with 3 characters…kudos!
I love the hairstyle of Pearl! May be her brothers are too big and therefore she is looking tiny compared to them.
It is sad to know that she is a spoiled kid, her brothers are only coping with her because she pays them😒 May be they need that extra money!

Kislaya,
I’m not a fan of spoiled kids but this is a bit funny.
So much detail in this one and a wonderful job as well. Come and check out my A2Z at http://taotalkcom.wordpress.com
Jade,
I tend to get involved in my sketches. I can’t just draw my subject without illustrating the landscape to create an entire scene. Call it my weakness because it just doesn’t feel complete until I add the finishing elements to my picture.
Now this one I don’t remember, but I love the pic… great job as always my friend!!! I would put such a pic as this up on my great-granddaughter’s bedroom wall for sure! Hugs and thanks for sharing! hugs
Marie,
When I colorize this illustration, I’ll be sure to send it to you via email and if I forget to, which I probably will then be sure to ask me to it. 😉
Her brothers should be bigger, if they have to carry her. That’s a really well done sketch!
That came out great. I don’t remember Pearl. I need to see the film again. I am sure I will watch it with my great niece soon 🙂 XO
Ellen,
Pearl is a character from the TV series (1992-1994). That’s probably why you don’t remember her but she reminds me of one of Ariel’s sisters. Now, that would be a fun sketch to do, Ariel’s sisters.
Good work with the sketch! She might be a tad out of proportion but I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t pointed it out. Still, I think it works for her.
Trudy,
It’s interesting sometimes I don’t realize until after I complete my sketch if my things are out of proportion. I’m trying to watch for this before I get that far into my drawing. There has to be a trick to this but not having a higher education in the arts then I’m having to wing it by trial and error process. I’m okay with it, though. I love learning!
Today was a very intricate sketch, what with several characters and all those details! I think the proportions are fine, they are older brothers! My own brothers are 10 and 15 years older than me, so I didn’t think anything of Pearl’s being so large!
Nice job.
Lisa,
This sketch took a bit longer but it was fun, relaxing therapy. That’s the way I see artwork therapy. It calms my hectic life. WOW, there’s a huge age difference between you and your brothers! I always thought the 9-years between me and my baby sister was a lot. Thanks for popping by!
Not having watched the TV series, a lot of these characters are new to me but your drawings of them are great. Such a lot of detail in this one and I can tell by Pearl’s face she is loving every minute of the attention.
Janet,
Yes, she is enjoying herself! Who wouldn’t? That must be nice to have someone to carry you around like that, huh?
Janet,
Yes, she’s enjoying herself clearly. The poor brothers I don’t think are so much, what do you think? 🙂
I hadn’t notice that until you mentioned it. Boys are always way bigger. It’s all good. I can tell this sketch took a lot of work. I love it just as it is.
Have a fabulous day, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥
Sandee,
Ah, thanks! I probably wouldn’t make Pearl much bigger even if I had caught it from the start because she’s small. 🙂
Sandee,
I was always small but even my baby brother outgrew me. I always told her daughters, “Be good to your little brother. One day, he’ll be bigger you than you”. They never listened, though. lol
Pearl looks wonderfully purrfect to us!
Brian,
Thanks, pat on head my good ole pal!
Hi, Cathy!
Happy Thursday and “P” day to you, dear friend!
I’m pleased as punch to meet Pearl, the young, spoiled mermaid from The Little Mermaid TV series. I agree that the type of parenting Pearl received reflects how it is in real life. Her spoiled brat behavior is a cautionary tale that reveals the consequences of always letting a child have his or her way. Whether they like it or not, children need discipline and structure in their lives. They need their parents to set fair and reasonable limits and enforce the rules. I like the fact that the characters are out of proportion in your sketch because it add emphasis to the family dynamics. Pearl is tiny, yet she calls the shots and pays her big, strong, muscular brothers to carry her around like royalty, like a petite princess.
Great job, Cathy! Have a happy Thursday and I’ll see you tomorrow, dear friend!
Tom,
Kids do need parents overprotectiveness to keep them safe. They hate it when their young and maybe even resent it later but you gotta do what you feel is right, not what’s popular or what will win you brownie points. You’re right about the flood of spoiled young people in our society. Parents either cave in to or just always looking to blame others for their kids’ shortcomings which don’t do them any good. I kind like the unbalance proportions of Pearl to her brothers for the very reasons you see and it’s so true how brothers want to take care of their sisters even if it means being mistreated in the process. Thanks for visiting this morning, dear pal!
