Winter at Mingus Mill

Hello, kittens & dawgs! Here it is the first Wednesday of a new month. I’m thrilled with March’s arrival and am eager for spring to usher in soon. I can’t believe how quickly 2015 is moving. Just think about it, it’s hump-day already! This week is half-way over and as the old saying goes, it’s all down hill the rest of the way.

In recent years, I shared photos of Mingus Mills, but during different seasons. I have not photographed this area in the winter before now. The sky clearly shows the lovely weather and although the temps were mild with the sun beginning to shift farther west the air felt nippy near the water.

Just over my left shoulder there is a peaceful path, but we have not walked it. Perhaps before the return of the busy tourism season we can take a little stroll to see where it goes. It was too cold to do it on this day, but I did get a few more shots of the mill.

We were the only people there, other than another couple and their dog.

I converted the original image to B&W. It captures the coldness surrounding the mill on this February day.
A different view of the water spilling over the channel. I used a filter giving the image a blueish dreamy feel.

Yep, we definitely will need to go back, if nothing else to take more pictures. I just love this spot!

  6. What a great place!! I am feeling the colour version a bit more today — it really shows off the icicles and the rushing water; and then the lovely woods surrounding.
    And I say, Yes – definitely explore that trail one day and bring back lots of pictures for us!

    1. Really?! Surely, y’all get freezing conditions in London and at the very least, do icicles hang from eves of homes? We get usually see conditions like this in Knoxville once each winter, but this year we’ve already had three icy days and we’re fixing to get hit again. I’m more than ready for spring!

    1. It is a good place for people and their pets to get out to stretch their legs, which I see a lot. The mill still grinds corn and sold during tourist season. Even though, we’ve inside the old musty building we have never bought any. Maybe, this year we can!

  14. Hi Cathy. Mingus Mills is a super gorgeous place. Lucky you! I did enlarge the first photo and the soft, distinct golden sunset against the blue sky was breath-taking. It looked cold but not until I saw the second photo, did I realize to what extent. The ice in the black and white (which I love the most) resembles locks of think wavy hair. It is literally standing still, frozen in time. Whereas the color seems to show movement or more so than the black and white. I enjoy the color – greens, blues, browns, grays – a treasure, but something about the B&W captured me, (smile).

    1. It really was a gorgeous day. On top of the Smoky’s there were mounds of snow and at the bottom (NC side) in Cherokee, it felt like early spring. Ice crusted ground and channel at the mill was the only reminder that it was still winter. I’m looking for more blue skies and a Saturday to get outdoors to shoot more of God’s beautiful world.

      1. I didn’t realize where this mill was. I live in NC, about 3 hours from Cherokee. Maybe I’ll have a trip this summer to see it! Definitely, God’s beautiful world!

        1. Yeah, if you’re heading from Cherokee toward the Smoky’s on 441, Mingus Mill is not too far from the GSM visitor’s center on the left side. There is a sign pointing to it, but if you’re not familiar with the area it is easily overlooked. It’s a lovely spot. Hopefully, you can visit it when the weather improves.

  15. Very nice photos of a beautiful place. I was talking to one of my sisters in Maryville today and she said more cold and winter weather coming in a couple days. Yikes! What’s going on there?

    1. What’s happening? Isn’t it apparent? It’s global warming! lol I told DH Al Gore probably spends winter on some far away tropical island and has no clue (this should come as no surprise) on this matter. But…we do have him to thank for inventing the internet, right? BWA-HA-HA! I’m sorry I get carried away by my own silliness sometimes. Your sister is right, another round of wintry mix is expected to swoop in later today. If we get what they are forecasting, then DH will home tomorrow and Knoxville will be shut down again.

      1. On Monday I was talking to a friend who lives in Loudon and the subject of Al Gore came up. He must be hiding somewhere. I haven’t seen him on TV or heard about him anywhere for maybe a few years. Maybe you get more news about Al back there, but here he’s like a non-person other than an occasional joke made about him now and then. He needs to hide.
