I’m a bit late here and love your picks but since Canada Day is celebrating 150 years and then you have your 4th of July, I am thinking” Today is your Birthday” by the Beatles

      Karine,

There was always music in my parents’ home. I remember Mom tuning in on many of the variety programs in the 70s like Dinah Shore, the Andy Williams show, Tom Jones, … The closest thing to rock n’ roll I recall my mother listening to is Tom Jones. I don’t remember what my daddy liked. I’d have to say he’s more of a country and bluegrass fan if I had to guess. Thanks for popping over and good luck!

We didn’t do anything for the 4th – spent some time with my Grandma and cleaned house all day.

      Mary,

Spending time with the family doing whatever you choose is always a good thing to do even if it’s cleaning house. 🙂

Good day, Cathy; I never thought I’d see Joan Jett and AC/DC over here. Now you’re speaking my language. 😀 Wishing Xmas Dolly, you and the whole crew a very Happy Anniversary. Seven years is a long time in the Blogosphere. Congratulations, ladies! BTW, I love your ‘starry’ photo. Gives it a real dreamy quality. Cheers!

Whew ! The 4th… I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Being 7 months pregnant can make a huge difference in your plans. As it turns out, it was a good energy day, so we ended up having a creative family tournament, including a pool contest, sandwich making contest, and video game play off. Then we went to see fireworks on the beach. LOTS of walking, but that stuff is good for us, right? 😉

      Crystal,

Oh you poor, poor dear! My first baby was due mid-July. We were having a nasty heat wave that year (1988) and I was so happy that she came early (end of June), so I really feel for you. I’m glad you had the energy to enjoy the festivities with the family this 4th. Take it easy and have a nice summer!

      Kimberly,

We couldn’t see a lot of the neighbors fireworks but every now and then some would shoot high enough to catch a glimpse above the trees. It’s still fun, even if we only hear the pops and booms. 🙂 Thanks for stopping in for a visit!

    Hi, Cathy!

I hope you guys had a safe and happy 4th. Would you believe I was able to watch no fewer than seven different fireworks displays at the same time last night? The public displays took place simultaneously from various locations around us and we had a panoramic view of them from our balcony. I never had that kind of experience before!

I have never known you to rock this hard, dear friend. You know me. I love this kind of music and you picked some great artists and songs. Rick Derringer’s bio is an interesting and convoluted story. Ohio kid Ricky Zehringer formed a band called The Rick Z Combo which was renamed Rick and the Raiders. In 1965 Ricky was tapped to sing lead vocals over an existing backing track laid down by The Strangeloves (the phony Australian band made up of a trio of Brill Building songwriters and record producers). The song was “Hang On Sloopy,” a cover of the 1964 recording “My Girl Sloopy” by The Vibrations, the group I am currently featuring on SDMM. Instead of releasing “Hang On Sloopy” as by Rick and the Raiders, the artist name chosen to appear on the record label was The McCoys in order to avoid confusion with Paul Revere & The Raiders. Around this time Ricky Zehringer took the stage name Rick Derringer. The inspiration for his new name came from the gun logo of his record label, Bang. Wiki states the following disturbing fact: “Derringer was considered by Terry Melcher (Doris Day’s son) as a potential guitar player for a band fronted by notorious murderer Charles Manson.” After a successful stint with The McCoys in the 60s, Derringer hooked up with blues rock musicians Johnny and Edgar Winter and played in both of their bands. Derringer wrote “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and it was first recorded in 1970 by Johnny’s band Johnny Winter And. In 1973 Derringer recorded the song as a solo and it became a rock classic.

Thank you for the rockin’ mewsical interlude, Cathy! (I was four days late discovering your comment on my Shady Train post and want you to know that I replied to it and that I appreciate it very much, dear friend!)

      Tom,

We had a lovely Independence Day in one another’s company as usual. There’s nothing like spending time with my best friend who happens to be my husband. 🙂 How cool to watch the various fireworks shows. We caught a bit of our local display, as well we watched the big event from Washington, DC on PBS. I enjoy rockin’ hard sometimes but you’re right I’m fairly low key when it comes to my mewsic preferences. I fondly remember “Hang On Sloopy”. WOW, that’s an interesting factoid regarding Manson. When I think of fronting someone in the entertainment industry, then I think of someone who has money. Was Charles Manson rich? When I think of Mason, I think of some LSD, Hippie with a twisted spiritual perspective. I don’t recall a whole lot about Manson and his followers but I remember when Helterskelter came out, it terrified me. Thanks for sharing and visiting. You always teach me something new when you stop by, dear friend. Have a good week. Oh yes, no worries about just now seeing my comment. That happens to us all. 🙂

Bible verse of the day

Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

4M Guidelines: Below are the 4M co-hostess. The rules are simple. Every other week, a suggested (not mandatory) theme is given to build your song picks. We're looking for embedded music to enjoy, one song or several. On the off weeks, we dance to whatever music moves you (your choice)! It's just that easy. Have fun and welcome to the party!
