Hello, Kitten & Dawgs, thanks for sticking with me this month for the A2Z Art Sketching Through the Alphabet. I’m especially excited to share the letter “U” drawing of a dark Unicorn!
Typically, I prefer white unicorns but I wanted the challenge to practice shading and this was a purrfect lesson to learn.
Hopefully, what I share with you every day will encourage you to do something that interests you that you’ve long put off because like me you just don’t think you can. My advice is, just do it! Maybe, you’ll be surprised. I know I was! 🙂
I’m heading off to link up with other fellow AtoZers and you’re invited to come along. I’ll see you on tomorrow for the next installment of Art Sketching through the Alphabet!

Great job on the Unicorn!
Fantastic work Cathy. This is super. It’s so lifelike (if unicorns were real live creatures).
V is for Ventriloquist
The dark unicorn seems ominous and fierce. Nice depiction.

This black unicorn is fantastic. I’m glad you didn’t make it white. The shading is gorgeous!
Andy, although, I prefer white unicorns the shading challenge appealed to me and I was pleased with the oUtcome of my illustration. Thanks for dropping by!

Marie, ahh, you’re so sweet! Thank U for stopping by and for your kinds words, dear friend.
This is very well done! I love horses and this is a powerful drawing. You did very well with the shading and I’m all for a black unicorn…something wild and free about it
Birgit, the black unicorn does give the sense of being wild and free. Thanks for stopping by!
Very nice! I need to share my vet’s art with you…TYJ Art Studio, Fine Art by John Plishka. He is amazing. His art has been on vet magazines, horse magazines, and won awards. Check it out on Facebook. Hugs!

I wondered what you would come up with for U. The unicorn is fabulous!
I like your unicorn – especially how it appears to be sparkling in places. 🙂 Good job with it! And I think the shading effect is pretty cool.
Visiting from the A to Z Challenge. See my “U” post here: https://lydiahowe.com/2017/04/25/u-is-for-uncle-izaac-atozchallenge/
I was going to draw a unicorn for the u post, sadly, I didn’t
haven’t seen a black unicorn much, this is nice, I like the white in the hair and hone, it seems to shine, just the mystical creature
have a lovely day.
I imagine unicorns come in all different colors, just like horses. You know, piebald, dappled, roan… I like the black one, myself
This is one my favourites, of all your sketches, Cathy! What a beautiful unicorn. The shading came out well.
I love the unicorn! It’s a beautiful drawing because of the exciting pose you put him in with the flowing mane. I especially love the detail on the horn. Great job!
Lexa, I’m learning detailing to any sketch really makes the difference and it’s exciting to see my illustrations take on a life of their own beneath my fingertip. Thanks for visiting today, dear friend!
That is fantastic!
Ellen, you’re very kind – so glad you enjoyed the drawing!
Amazing unicorn! And I just learned today (in another blog) that the Unicorn is Scotland’s National Animal. I love the A to Z challenge!

Susanne, Oh cool! I’ll have to check out your post. Thanks for the invite and for the visit. 😉
Hi, Cathy!
i’m away from home this week (until “W”) and reading your post on a smaller laptop, but that does little to diminish the pleasure of gazing at your U exhibit – the Unicorn. You did another excellent job here, Cathy. The shading looks very natural, showing off the legendary horned creatures’s sturdy body and powerful muscles. Your unicorn appears mighty, majestic and spirited.
Do you remember the folk song “The Unicorn,” the multi-million selling international hit single for the Irish Rovers in 1968?

Thanks for delighting me with another great drawing, Cathy! Purrfect might be a better word, 🙂
Tom,
I appreciate you stopping to visit. I know making the blogging rounds using a small laptop screen is hard on the eyes but I’m charmed the quality of my sketch was not lost. Thank you for the introduction to “The Unicorn Song”. I love the artists’ thick Irish accents. I wish I had thought to add some mewsic to go with my post but at least you did! Have a good day and be safe in your travels, dear friend!
I love this one!
I’m glad that you do, Michelle! Thanks for popping over. 🙂
Thank you Michelle! This was my first sketch I gave a great deal of shading and was was thrilled with the outcome. Have a good day, my friend.
