Good day, Kittens and dawgs! I blinked; Christmas was over and the calendar flipped over ushering in a new year and as quick as a sneeze here we are mid way through this brand new month of this brand new year.
What I really want to know is, did you miss me the first go round of BoTB? Well, I missed you! The break was VERY much-needed. I’m now ready to get my game on and back in the swing of things.
Dolly Parton wrote and recorded the 1980 hit comedy 9 to 5 theme song, which turned out to be her biggest hits of the decade.
I know you want to, but please refrain from voting for Dolly. The original isn’t part of today’s competition. It serves only as reference and enjoyment.
Here’s a fun fact. Wikipedia says..
While filming the movie, Dolly found she could use her long acrylic fingernails to simulate the sound of a typewriter. She wrote the song on set by clicking her nails together and forming the beat.
Now it’s time punch the clock and get down to business. Meet contender #1
Next, my personal favorite and a gal from right here in Knoxville, Tennessee. Contender # 2, 2015 The Voice runner-up, Miss Emily Ann Roberts!
Which artist does 9 to 5 better, Melinda Schneider & Beccy Cole or Emily Ann Roberts? Please leave your answer in comments; if you have time and want to share what makes your pick the “best” of the two, then I’d love to hear about it.
I want to thank the brain child behind this cool, bi-monthly meme, Fae. I’m looking forward to another year of band showdowns. There’s no time to rest on your laurels! The fun continues with more epic battles underway; I invite you to visit this little shindig hop coördinator, Stephen, who manages a list of amazing repeat bloggers participating.
I’m gonna close the polls at midnight on the 22nd and I’ll report the results on the 25th when I join the Monday’s Music Moves Me crew. Mark your calendar and stop by to see if your pick gets named! Thanks for joining in on the fun. This is Curious as a Cathy signing off with for your entertainment only Home Free covering Dolly’s original.
Have a bandtastic day!

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get around to voting – this BotB hop is getting huge! As for the song, I am only vaguely familiar with the original and it wasn’t one of my favorites of Dolly’s. I was pretty underwhelmed by both contenders, but that is *probably* because the song just never really did anything for me to begin with. I loved the bass which came through on the first video, but my vote is going to Emily Ann because I preferred her voice by leaps and bounds.
Kim, no worries about stopping by late. I’m running behind this round, too. I find it hard to vote on a song sometimes when I don’t have a personal connection to it, so I get where you’re coming from, but I’m happy you decided on Emily Ann, though. Now to hop over to your place.
I’m gonna cast a vote for your favorite Miss Emily Ann Roberts. I didn’t like the sisters. Oh well. Just goes to show that we’re all different in what we like!
Robin, Ahhh, I’m so happy Miss Roberts got another vote. Unfortunately, she’s not getting enough to beat the sisters who dominate this battle. 🙁
My vote is for Melinda and Beccy they same to do the song a bit better. Nice to see you back in the Battle!
Glad to have you back. gotta say I really didn’t miss you, but that’s only because I’ve been AWOL myself. Just having a hard timekeeping my head above water. Hope things are a little smoother sailing for all of us in 2016.
Now as to this BATTLE. Give my vote to Melinda and Beccy, just couldn’t take too much of that little girl voice in the other one. she seems to have talent and her voice may mature, but for right now, it’s not for me.
Fae, no problem. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been AWOL. It’s easy to do when other things come up in life. I hope for both our sakes life is better this year. I appreciate you making time to stop in to vote, though. I have you down for Melinda & Beccy. Now, I need to finish up my visiting the other BoTBers. I’m running way behind!
Usually I don’t like what the talent shows do to songs, but I connected better with Emily Ann Roberts. Melinda and Beccy seemed too much like two suburban housewives doing for giggles.
John, it seems folks either like or hate TV talent shows. I kinda like watching them. That being said, I definitely will try to watch AI this season since it’s the final one. You are certainly going against the voting norm this round. I mean, the two suburban housewives are leading quite a bit. I hope Emily Ann still has a shot at it and we know sometimes the numbers change up before the battle ends. I gotcha down for Miss Roberts. Thanks for dropping by, my friend! Now over to your place. 🙂
Great song selection. I remember the film, very funny. Lilly Tomlin was in it too, I can never remember the other lady but I know she must have been in other films too.
Your Favourite Emily Ann does indeed do the song justice and she puts on a great show. I can see that selection getting most of the votes, but I’ve decided to throw my vote towards Schneider and Cole. They had fun with the song, I think it was more refined, not as ‘busy’. I liked the inclusion of the typewriter as well.
Jeffrey, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton are three starring females in this hilarious production. Dabney Coleman is great in it, too. When I put this song up, I thought Emily Ann would pull more votes, but the Schneider & Cole duet is drawing more. I have your vote recorded, now to hop over to your place. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi, CATHY! Welcome back!
Of course I missed you, because you put together some of my favorite musical Battles.
Well, first I need to let my snark out…
Who dresses these women for the stage? Find those peoples and fire ’em! Actually, I think we’re only looking for one person, because whoever dressed the short-haired sister must have also dressed Miss Emily Ann Roberts, too, because they’re both looking ridiculous. (Melinda and Beccy gotta be sisters, amiright? I mean, they look exactly the same… except they have different wardrobe designers.)
In this Battle, I hated the way Melinda and Beccy mug and dance and “perform” when they perform. It has all the sincerity of the 3rd nightly performance in a Las Vegas lounge. But their singing was good.
Miss Emily Ann Roberts has a nice voice… for awhile. But then eventually it started to wear on me, and I was more than ready for her song to come to an end when it did.
Videos and performing styles notwithstanding, I vote for MELINDA & BECCY. Good singing, and the video I simply stopped watching.

Stephen, thank you! It’s good to be back. I’m running very late with comments and return visits. Go ahead, let your snark out. That’s fine by me. 😀 I wonder the same thing when it comes to the wardrobe choices they use for not only these type of shows, but shows in general. A good sense of fashion is lost these days. I don’t know if Melinda and Beccy are related or not, but they do share a close resemblance, don’t they? Emily Ann does have a nice voice and I think you would like other covers she did better. She’s young and has room for improvement. That’s actually time is a gift to this budding country star and she will get better. You can bet on that! Well, I have you down for Melinda and Beccy. Now, it’s time to see which song and artists in your round of BoTB.
Both of these contenders are pretty close in the talent department – so I have to vote for local girl, Emily Roberts! So young and so talented.
I like Emily Roberts-her voice sounded fresher to me and more fun the way this song should be so she gets my vote
Birgit, Miss Roberts isn’t getting the votes I had hoped that she’d get. She’s a very talented young lady who lacks experience, but that will change with time and she will really shine. I have you down for Emily Ann.
Even though I’m not really a country fan, I love Dolly Parton and especially her song “9 to 5,” and I really loved the movie too. Have a great weekend!
Lexa, the thing with Dolly is you don’t have to be a country music lover to like her and her music. She’s a sweet, adorable person!
I was listening to these when the hubby walked in and when I asked him which he liked better (he did not see the singers) he said “well that one is Dolly” when Melinda and Beccy were singing, so I guess that is how the vote is going.
They were all well done; lots of energy to the voices, which is really what makes this song a success. Dolly sang with energy and passion no matter what she was singing about. She is still one of my Fav country singers. Just favorite anything.
Have a good weekend Cathy. Glad you feel invigorated from the break.
Oh I gotta give mad respect to Miss Emily Ann – she did good for someone so young. But I cannot, can’t, won’t vote against one Miss Dolly Parton!! She’s too awesome. I don’t think I can do it. It’s Dolly and I LOOOOVEE her. And I’m Canadian! LOL
Les, you don’t have to vote against Dolly, dear. She’s not one of the contenders. You can pick between Emily Ann or Melinda & Beccy. Now you can give your vote freely, if you want. 😀
Loved the movie! My vote goes to Melinda & Beccy.
Mary, yep 9 to 5 is a good, ole fun movie! Thanks for voting, now off to see what you’ve got goin’ in this battle.
Melinda Schneider & Beccy Cole.are my choice too. I enjoyed the interaction, and the way they shared the high/low vocal range. Dolly has that wide vocal range. it’s possible that Emily will develop that as she matures.
Yes, of course I missed you! Hope things are great!
Hi, Cathy; I loved the movie and the song. Good thing Dolly isn’t in the contest – she’d win by a landslide! 🙂 Her nails are something to behold, aren’t they? Fun bit of trivia there. I remember Emily Ann Roberts singing that on American Idol. She did a good job, but I preferred the more “mature” sound of Melinda and Beccy, plus the dual vocals gave it an extra dimension.
Just wanted to add that this movie (and song) is so apropos to the topic we were discussing a few days ago. 🙂 Even though it was a comedy, the underlying theme was true to life.
I love Dolly Parton and remember fondly seeing her live, performing at the Austin Aqua-Fest back in the 90s. She puts on a great show and I really enjoy the stories she tells on stage.
As for your battle, although I thought Emily Ann Roberts was good, I really liked Melinda and Beccy. It was nice to see them perform the song although it wasn’t necessary to be able to tell how much fun they have performing it together. I never heard of them before. Are they a duo that is always together? I like them!
Great battle Cathy.
Michele at Angels Bark
Michele, I would love to see Dolly Parton in person. She’s so likeable on TV. Did you know, she got her first big break here in Knoxville? Of course, this was many years before we came to town. I love how she’s invested so much of herself back into the community she calls home. I wonder, if she might offer Emily Ann a job at Dollywood. They had Dolly on The Voice while Emily Ann was on The Voice. I got your voice logged for Melinda & Beccy. Thanks for playing along, now I’m off to your place!
Hi, dear Cathy!
First, congratulations on winning the huge Powerball jackpot with that ticket you bought on your recent trip to Memphis! 🙂
Yessum, I missed your participation in the Jan. 1 battle, especially because you aren’t afraid to present country music, a category I appreciate more and more as I grow older. I loved 9 To 5, the hit single by Dolly and the hit movie. Did you watch the Dolly Parton movie Coat of Many Colors last month starring the little girl (Sharon’s daughter) from The Young and the Restless? Mrs. Shady and I did and we loved it!
My ears match yours in today’s BOTB. I vote for Emily Ann Roberts because her voice is more similar to Dolly’s. It soars and quavers and pleads. Emily’s performance, complete with backing singers, has more energy and fun and pizzazz. i vote for Emily!
Thank you, dear friend Cathy!
Tom, ahhh you must have me confused with someone else. Me, the winner of the Powerball?! I don’t think so. I wish it were so, though. We need a break like that right now. 🙂 Emily Ann is a delight young artist. You’re right, The Voice, like all other talent shows are a bit too produced. It’s rare to find a a newcomer who sounds like a seasoned performer on any of these type of shows, but Emily has a fantastic voice and I image her hitting the billboards someday. Her appearance on The Voice will give her a shot at something big in the future. Thanks for voting, my friend. One more thing, I heard the Powerball winner came from California, Tennessee, and Florida. You weren’t the lucky winner, were you?
Unfortunately, I am not the Florida winner. I didn’t even win a free ticket! 🙁
I vote for Schneider and Cole. They have the maturity to do this song justice. Emily Ann Roberts has a bright future, no doubt, but she’s not in her natural element with this song. It’s over-produced.
Love,
Janie
Jannie, thanks for voting for Schneider & Cole. I think Emily Ann has a bright future in the singing industry, too. She’s a grounded young lady and very talented. I think The Voice (with the Lord’s help) will open many doors for her. Now to visit you! 😉
I couldn’t vote against Dolly so it’s good that she’s not in the running.
Both of these versions have similar mood in their delivery. Our Knoxville gal is mighty good, but it all sounds like a production. Of course they’re aiming for that. Let me just say she’s really good, but I prefer the Schneider/Cole duo. It’s kind of snappier, catchier, and I like the vocal interplay between the singers.

Tossing It Out
Lee, being a hometown boy I totally understand where your loyalty lie, but I have a sneaky suspicion everyone LOVES Dolly and no one would want to vote against her. 🙂 Both covers are quite similar and nice ones. I was surprised that I couldn’t find other artists covering Dolly’s 80s smash hit, other than individuals sitting in their bedroom in front of their computer, etc. I didn’t even consider those type of YouTube match ups. Well, I have your vote recorded for Schneider/Cole. Now, I”m off to see what tune’s playing at your place!
