Water Rock Knob Views #WW

Welcome Kittens & Dawgs!  I can honestly say, I’m glad September is behind me.  I hate saying that really I do.  It was a busy month and it looks like October is set up to be a repeater.  I haven’t had a chance to take many pictures recently but I do have a few images that I didn’t get to share with you yet.  Well…I’m sure I have a lot of old pictures I haven’t published but I’m speaking of ones captured in recent months.

This is Water Rock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway north of Cherokee, North Carolina from Memorial Day weekend.  We had a number of early evening picnics from this spot over the summer. I’d image fall colors are noticeable now.
This weather mood is amazing from Water Rock Knob.  It’s often cloudy or misty.  This photo capture is from August.  We love coming here because it’s so refreshing from the low lying elevation of Knoxville and I bet it feels wonderful today.

This is a blog hop for photo enthusiasts who like to share with words or keep it seem with pictures only. Whichever you are, you’re welcome to join the fun!

[tweetthis]I linked up with Curious as a Cathy for some not-so #WW fun & I invite you join the party! #photography[/tweetthis]

This week’s ABC Wednesdays alphabet prompt is the letter “M” and my photo contributions is a purrrfect fit my Appalachian mountains.

Last week, I shared two sketches in the attempt to catch up with the Scribble Picnic weekly art prompts. I failed to realize that the second drawing I shared for the “CHICKEN” prompt of the swinging footbridge was meant for THIS week.  I thought, “Oh, well, my bad!” Actually, this turned out to be a blessing giving me another chance to sketch it again.  So, here’s another illustration of that scary swinging footbridge that I was too chicken to cross as a kid and I’m purrty sure I wouldn’t cross it now, either. I’m a scaredy-Cathy!

It can stand more improvements but the more I monkey with it the more I see impurrfections, so I decided to leave it along as it and try again another time.

I’m going to leave with you my song selection that’ll probably shock most of you because this is not a band I typically listen to but found their newest song release not so bad.  Give it up for Disturbed with “A Reason to Fight”!

Before you, I want to invite you to vote in my Oct. 1st BoTB. You don’t have be apart of the community or know anything about the songs/artists, just vote on the cover artist you like the best. It’s that simple! Have a good day and please join me tomorrow for my Thursday Two Question mashup fun!

    1. Claire,

This is one of our favorite places in the mountains and while it can be busy at times, usually we can have a quiet picnic while enjoying the atmosphere. Thanks for stopping by for a visit.

  1. Great take on the theme, Cathy! I think I would be too scared to cross that bridge too. I don’t even like going across high bridges in a car — I feel panicky and can’t wait to get to the other side as quickly as possible.

  2. This is a new Disturbed song for me, Cathy, thanks for sharing! Even though I love the heavier rock sounds, they’re not really a band that I have in my immediate collection. But, it’s musicians like this who can occasionally surprise you with meaningful ballads that make me appreciate the genre even more.

  3. I just love to watch the clouds drift over the mountain tops.
    So beautiful!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Lisa

  4. I like Disturbed, especially their version of Sounds of Silence. Nice photos and drawing. Thanks for hosting.

  5. Cathy, so glad you took on the prompt for “Chicken” as a dare. I was so hoping someone might try that. Very pretty. I will have to see if I can find the older version one too. Thanks.

Your photos are lovely and moody.

The new them, btw, is “Bottle.” I’m sure you can have fun with that and one’s got two weeks to do it too. 🙂

    Thanks for playing along.

    1. Michael,

I love seeing the talent in this meme. Just look at last week’s post and not only see my first attempt of the ‘chicken’ prompt but a link for an actual chicken sketch (old school pencil & paper) that I drew last year for the A to Z Challenge. I’m glad you liked my take on the challenge. The real swinging bridge was far scarier than my drawing, especially to a little girl. I think my uncles wound up carrying me across that thing. My memory is totally blank. I figured I was traumatized by the ordeal and can’t remember. lol Thanks for sharing the next upcoming prompt. That sounds like a good one. I drew mason jars this past April in the A to Z Challenge which I really enjoyed doing. So, I’m going to like drawing a bottle for this one! Have a good evening!

  6. Love that view! It’s been forever since I went hiking, but being in Florida, that makes sense. I don’t consider walking on a paved path “hiking.” I love that sketch. Of course you’re going to pick it apart, but I think it’s wonderful.

    Love that song.

    1. Crystal,

Florida is too warm for me even in the winter. But, if I were to visit the Sunshine state that’s the best time to do it. lol I can’t imagine trying to hike anywhere down there. We haven’t gone a real hike in forever. I don’t have a lot of interest in doing that anymore. I don’t like being out in the elements but I do enjoy beautiful views so we try to find places that are convenient to our drives which is easy for us. There are some places I’d love to hike to if I were 30 years younger and didn’t mind being eaten up by mosquitoes or worse bear. lol Of course, y’all have gators down there and that’s just as scary if not more so. Bear usually will leave you a long but gators will snatch you up in a heart beat. Thanks for your saying you like my sketch and you’re right, we’re all more critical of our own artwork (or anything) than others. I just try to enjoy doodling and leave it at that. 🙂

  7. This flatlander loves looking at pictures of any place that has real hills and mountains, and i’d love to visit a place like that again someday.

Your sketch looks very nice to me, it makes the bridge look very wobbly and unstable, a good reason not to cross.

  8. I never heard of Disturbed until I heard their Sound of Silence cover, which I think is great.

  9. Those are some really dynamic clouds to work with. I love those views, sometimes I miss living closer to the Blue Ridge Parkway, it is such a beautiful area.

  10. Hi Cathy 🙂 Your photos are just lovely! Your sketchy is very pretty! But…I admit, I’m a scaredy-Cathy too lol!! Anything crickety and long and tall…I’ll opt out! And…for that matter, I’m a scaredy-Rain when it comes to anything insecty and fast!!!

Funny…I used to listen to Disturbed, I’m remembering Down With the Sickness at the moment! Though I had a pretty severe work burnout many years ago and the only music I can handle lately is new age and nature sounds!! My old punk days are long gone lol…

  11. What a beautiful place to go for a picnic. I would enjoy it very much.

Love your sketches. I can’t draw anything.

Love the video. Not heard it before.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday my friend. Big hugs. ♥

  12. Hi, Cathy!

Happy ABC and not-so-Wordless Wednesday, dear friend!

Thanks for sharing pics taken at Water Rock Knob on the BRP near Cherokee, NC. I can imagine you tweaking that second picture, the one of the moody weather, using your tool kit, and transforming it into a spooky Halloween sky. I can imagine a witch on a broomstick flying through the opening in the clouds. What do you think of that idea?

When I think of “M” for mountains, I recall my youth in Penna and my family’s vacations in the mountains in Potter and Tioga Counties in the northern part of the commonwealth, driving slowly along dirt roads with the specific purpose of spotting dear, staying in a rustic log cabin, using an outhouse and attending the annual Woodsman’s Carnival. It was great fun.

I see improvement in your Scribble Picnic drawing of the shaky swinging footbridge, the one you didn’t trust to cross in your youth. If the span was that long, with that much water to cross, I can understand why you hesitated. However I do not think of you as a “scaredy-Cathy” today. You are filled with spunk and spirit, and have demonstrated courage by displaying your art and poetry for all to see.

I enjoyed “A Reason To Fight” by Disturbed. I like how the intensity rises and falls throughout. People who automatically turn away from a band because they are put-off by its name or the genre of mewsic it represents are missing great, inspiring, empowering songs like this one.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

I love the idea of transforming the darkened sky into a spooky Halloween scene. I’m going to have to do just that and share it later in the month. Thanks for the suggestion, my friend. I was reading some of the specs on that swinging bridge and it did have a good span, 180feet. The river always ran purrty swiftly through there but I don’t recall how deep the water is at that point. I do remember there are places that are quite deep, so deep in fact the big kids would jump off the cliffs into the river during the summer. That always terrified me to see my uncles run like crazy men off the side of the hill but I was just tot when they were in their teens. As you know I’m not a heavy metal fan but I do appreciate that many of these groups have excellent vocalists and mewsicians. Sometimes I get a big surprise like I did with this cut when I realize that I like a song. It pays to keep one’s mind open to the possibility that awaits. Have a pAwesome day, my friend and thank you for your on-going support! PS: I added a new page for my poetry. Just hover on the “About Cathy” page and you’ll see a dropdown menu. They are under “A Poet I am Not”. That’s the way I feel about myself but maybe I’m evolving into one. 🙂 The page needs more work but at least I have a good start.

  13. Wow Cathy!

Your sketchwork is really making some great improvements. (not that you were terrible to begin with) I like the colors in the drawing – and I would probably be to chicken to cross that footbridge, too!

And you have certainly surprised me with your choice in Disturbed. It warms my heart that you are steeping outside of your comfort zone and embracing different artists and genres. I’m sure you’ve heard it before – their cover of Sound of Silence. David Draiman’s voice has a very powerful quality to it. Makes one feel… primal… at times.

Thank you again for joining in my little celebration of Rock this month. Looking forward to what you come up with next.

    1. Mary,

Thank you for the kind words on my art. 🙂

Yes, I think it was Disturbs’ “Sound of Silence” that I was introduced to the band and if I remember right DS shared the group with me. Heavy metal bands aren’t my cup of tea…scratch that I need coffee this morning, but on occasions like this I’m surprised to find a song that sits well with my ears by heavy rockers. It makes mewsic interesting. Have rockin’ good day!
