Vintage Style Modern Day Songs BoTB

Howdy, hi folks! It’s September again. How did that happen? Yep, it’s here regardless if you’re ready or not.  I personally am looking forward to the change in seasons later in the month.  I know you didn’t drop by to hear me moan about the weather.   Let’s dive into another edition of Battle Of the Bands!

In this showdown, I got the idea over the summer to put two vintage style bands singing modern day song when I spied some choices pop up on YouTube one day.

First up I have Postmodern Jukebox with Stella Katherine Cole covering Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers“.

Next up, I have Postmodern Jukebox with Joey, Adanna, Nina Ann singing “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man.  This is a relatively new to group to me.

There you have it folks!  Which vintage style artist performing a modern day song do you like best?

Polls close at noon (ET) on the 7th!

That concludes another edition of Battle of the Bands.   We’re in the home stretch with our vacation preparations.  I’m always afraid something is going to be forgotten and I’m sure I will but, it’ll be here in Blogosphere.  Hopefully, if all goes well,  I’ll publish the results of today’s battle in next week’s 4M post for simplicity.   I hope you have time to check out the other battles underway. You’ll find a list of participants in my side bar beneath the BOTB banner.

This is a holiday weekend. Later this today my 4M post goes live. Feel free to join me on the dance floor. This is CAAC signing off, have a bandtastic day!

Please, leave your vote for your favorite band in comments!

  1. I’m going with Stella Cole and her great and, to me, better interpretation of this song than the original. I find Miley irksome, to be honest and she has a shrill and nasally voice when she talks. This is a great rendition from a lady who knows how to control her voice. I like the other group too but Stella grabbed my attention.

  2. CAThy! It’s that YOU! ~

Ha! I like this old style of music and enjoyed BOTH recordings in your Battle. I hadn’t heard either song before, and suspect I probably wouldn’t be wild about them as recorded by the original (young) artists. But I dig ’em done Old School.

I could have voted for either song and felt right good about it. But I thinks I likes ‘FLOWERS’ by “Stella! STELLA!” Katherine Cole a wee bit better. And if she could somehow tear herself away from herself for a night, I could show her a real nice time. 😉

    1. Stephen,

I’m thrilled you enjoyed this battle. I felt good about putting it together. It certainly is a little different using PMJ with different lead vocalists covering two different songs. Maybe, Stella will see your comment and take you up on your offer. Thanks for voting for the underdog in this round FLOWERS.

    1. Lee,

I really appreciate your vote for FLOWERS. I was being to think this PMJ rendition was going to totally bomb. Thanks for voting, my friend!

  3. Hi Cathy!

I’m voting for Feel It Still

I liked them both, but Flowers is a bit overplayed and Feel It Still was a welcome change.

  4. VOTE = FEEL IT STILL

I enjoy Post Modern Jukebox’s renditions most of the time. These were both quite good. Honestly, I had not heard either of the originals. Of these two, I found Feel It Still more entertaining musically, even though, as Thomas pointed out, the melody was substantially lifted from Please Mr. Postman. ~Ed.

    1. Awesome, you didn’t have any preconceived ideas of the original artists and with nothing to sway your opinion. Thanks for your vote for FEEL IT STILL, Ed!

  5. Personally, I don’t care for Miley Cyrus though I think she did a good job on this song. However, I like Portugal and their style. My vote goes to Portugal.

    1. Eugi,

I’m not a fan o Miley Cyrus. I didn’t do a good job explaining with my battle, I want the listener to go on the songs along, not the original artists, but each PMJ groups interpretation in covering it. I guess, I was a bit rushed when I put my thoughts down. I’m sorry about that. Thanks for your vote for FEEL IT STILL! It’s a fun song. 🙂

  6. Hi, Cathy, and howdy to my old buddy Foghorn Leghorn!

I’m back and “seeing you in September,” to paraphrase the old hit song. I hope you, DH and family are well and in good spirits as the summer season of 2024 begins to drift away.

Frankly, I rarely find videos by Postmodern Jukebox that I truly enjoy, no matter which artist fronts the band. However, this battle of yours offered a refreshing performance that I genuinely enjoyed, one that gave me a clear voting choice. In 2017, The Alaskan alternative rock band Portugal. The Man topped two Billboard Alternative music charts with “Feel It Still” which, as most boomers can tell in an instant, borrows the melody from the 1961 Marvelettes hit “Please Mr. Postman.” I love the zesty PMJ cover performance featuring the attractive girl trio of Nina Ann, Joey and Adanna, and they are the act that gets my vote.

I have a holiday weekend loaded with family activities, but I will make every attempt to visit you again and listen to your 4M songfest. Next Thursday, Sept. 5, I will be officially returning to blogging with a new post of my own and invite you to swing by if possible. Until then, take care of yourself and your family, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

I read the factoid while pulling this post together about “Feel It Still” melody copying the Marvelettes oldie which explained why Portugal’s tune appealed to me. Thanks for your vote for FEEL IT STILL! I’ll do my bestest to swing by your place for your upcoming post, IF it doesn’t slip my mind. 😉
