There’s no place like home #pencilsketch

Since I began my art journey three years ago I’ve sketched a couple of structures. I’m not sure if these images fall under architecture but they are building designs.

An old barn
A peaceful mountain cabin surrounded by lots of trees
The church on the hill where I attended Sunday School as a child or the way I remember it looking
I was the architect of DS’s 7th birthday cake. Okay my design is little lopsided but piecing it together to resemble a castle was tricky. The important thing is, my little fella loved it! That’s all that mattered. 🙂

This morning I’m sharing with you a home design I saw on the Internet that I liked to use for my sketch model.

I think if we build a home I’d like to have a farm house style home something like this. 🙂

Home Sweet Home

A strong foundation
Nothing else will do
Surrounded by four walls
And a whole lot of love, too
With a roof over my head
A safe haven where I abide
There’s no place like
“Home Sweet Home”

Inspired by a Eugi’s Causerie last week word prompt, Home Sweet Home.

  1. Hi Cathy 🙂 🙂 I love your contributions this week! The old barn is so nicely done…I love how you did the field! And look at that cake!!! Awesome!! 🙂 Your dream home is great, I would love to have a wrap-around porch…we can always dream! 🙂

    1. Rain,

I know you’re very busy with your to-do list before the cold weather arrives in Canada and I appreciate so much you taking time to visit. There’s something special about wrap-around porches. Everyone who’s commented seem to share the same fondness for this cozy addition to a home. Have a great day, my friend!

  2. I love your home sketch. A house with a big porch all or most of the way around the house is my style. Or I would like it to be.

  3. I love your home sketches and I would love a rach style home(all one floor) with a wrap around porch and a swing seat…perfect. You are coming along well with your sketches.

    1. Birgit,

A single level ranch with a basement would be nice. I just want some extra space without having to rely on outer buildings. The basement doesn’t even have to be finished. And, definitely a 2 to 3 car garage! I hate having to bring the groceries in from the car when it’s cold or getting into a super cold car when we leave. Brrr, I’m ready for garage! Anywho, thanks for the lovely compliments on my sketches. That makes me happy! 😉

  4. Home is where the heart is as they are saying these days and finally they got something right in this modern and sterile (architecturally speaking) time. Your drawings pull me back to times when architecture had feelings … a farm home is the perfect place to show that and what a place to live in … wouldn’t it be wonderful? I can just imagine sitting in a rocking chair on that beautiful wrap around porch … perfect place for kids to run and laugh and play. Love your castle cake and your adorable children. Designing a cake or even cookies for your children is always inspiring. I did many fun things when my kids were growing up, but sadly all those pictures are in a box somewhere … not readily available for posting 🙂 You are a delight Cathy and beyond talented. I hope you find your farm house someday … as long as you keep your computer in it so you can continue to share with us. Be well and stay safe …

    1. Andrea,

Home is where the heart is. We don’t understand that when we’re kids. It’s usually not until later in life it clicks. I envision on our wrap around porch rocking chairs, other outdoor furniture, even a porch swing. 🙂 Not to worry in my farmhouse, I’ll still have all of the marvelous advantages of technology at my fingertips. I like streaming movies & TV shows, as well as use the Internet for research and social media. I don’t know how we ever got by without cable or Internet. lol

  5. I love your sketches. Love the silo. We had one on our farm for many years. Made me smile.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

I love barns! I may sketch another sometime soon. I usually find something else to draw getting off track from that pursuit. In time, I’ll do it. 🙂

  6. Your sketches make me happy. And take me back in time to the time I did. Now whenever I have time I doodle a bit.

    Love and cheer, Cathy.

    1. Natasha,

If you like to doodle then join us on Thursdays! This is a great community that only encourages your passion but gives you a good exercise each week to strive to complete as you interpret. Thanks for dropping by, dearie!

  7. I apologize for taking so long to visit. It was definitely beyond my control, as I’m sure you read. I’m trying to catch up, but it’s harder than I actually imagined it would be.

You are an amazing artist, Cathy, You make the most beautiful pencil sketches. I loved all of these and that bridge in front of that cabin was incredible. Of course, I would LOVE to have that castle cake. No matter what you do, you make an art of it. I am super impressed, dear.

    1. Elizabeth,

Sometimes the Internet fails us. We have Comcast and there have been a few occasions that they turned off our service because we called in inquiring about something. It boggles my mind how that happened. Now whenever we talk to them we tell them up front. Do not change a thing with our account. We only want to know…. I’m glad you got things straightened out, though. Don’t worry about delayed visits here. I’m guilty of doing it and I usually don’t have a good excuse. 🙂 You’re very sweet with your compliments. I truly appreciate the encouragement. Have a doodletastic weekend, my dear!

    1. Soma,

The thing about birthday cakes, you’re never too old to enjoy your heart’s desire. Either drop hints to loved ones what you want, make it or buy it yourself. It’ll be a lot of fun for ya!

    1. Nicole,

You’re too kind. We are often our worse critics, aren’t we? I knew it wasn’t purrfect and I went into that project knowing I’d be testing my limits but I had fun building that castle cake for my little fella. Thanks for joining me, dear friend!

  8. Awww, Cathy! I love your sketches and they bring back fond memories of yesteryear, especially the one with the wrap around porch. My aunt that lived in Michigan had an old two-story house with a wrap around porch and grew all types of berries in her backyard. I spent many a summer there with my cousins and loved sitting on that porch.

I love your sweet poem and the lovely mewsic! Thanks so much for participating. ❤️

    1. Eugenia,

My grandparents had a wrap around porch on their old house but they eventually closed it up incorporating that space into their living area. There were many old homes in rural WV that had wrap around porches, though. I love them! I guess part of me wants one because it reminds me of those comforting childhood years. It would be a great place to spend time with our family, too.

  9. The cake is a masterpiece and your son was happy about it.
    The pictures are beautifully drawn!
I also love the country style. Wonderful video!
    Have a good day, Elke

  10. Nice drawings. I like the porch that wraps around the one in the bottom. I tried making a castle cake for my daughters too. Used upside down ice cream cones for the turrets. That was really lopsided!

    1. Janet,

I think when I made DS’s cake, I found some examples online using ice cream cones and almost did the same thing. It’s tricky trying to make a cake look like something that you piece together, isn’t it?

  11. Lovely pencil sketches, dear Kathy, and my fave piece of art today is that wonderful cake – it’s a masterpiece, well done! Have a fantastic day, hugs, Valerie

    1. Christine,

It’s hard to believe how fast our children grew up. DS is now 26. He still says that was a cool cake. I’m glad that it left a lasting impression with him. 🙂

  12. Thanks for your visit on my blog! And please don’t worry, if you can’t make it one week or the other. That’s life! 🙂 Love your pencil sketches of the different buildings. And that cake is great! The kids loved it for sure! Have great day!

    1. Yes, the children did enjoy the cake. It always brought me great happiness to do small things like this for them. There are days when I’d like to have these moments back if only briefly. That’s certainly how it felt being a mom of three once small children – all to fleeting but am thankful I was able to stay home with them instead of being forced to work outside the home. Finances were tight but we managed on DH’s income okay. Thanks for visiting and understanding my very late visit. I pride myself on making return visits in a timely fashion but sometimes it gets away from me. 😉

  13. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Art Date with Rain Thursday, dear friend!

I admire your sketches depicting familiar sights from your childhood. Thanks for sharing the flashback photo of your children at a much younger age. The cake your designed for your son looks nicely crafted to me, not lopsided. I’m sure it delighted him. I also enjoyed your poem, Cathy. A good house, a good family, a good community, a good country and a good world is built on a strong foundation. The farmhouse style home shown in your sketch would surely please Mrs. Shady because she loves a house with a large wrap-around porch. “To Build A Home” (for a dying lover or spouse) was a sweet, sad song and video by Cinematic Orchestra. I’m verklempt after watching it!

Have a safe and happy Thursday, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

I love wrap-around porches on homes. DH’s grandparents who lived across the road from his parents has one on their old home. It was a great place to congregate for family gatherings, especially in the summer months. They had planted grape vines that camouflaged much of the porch, making it also accessible to the fruit without going out to the small vineyard. The grapes were used by the family but also sold for extra pocket money. Boy, do I miss eating the grapes they grew as well as my late in-laws. You can’t buy ’em in the store that taste that good! Your word choice, “verklempt” is new-to-me, I thought it might mean ‘wept’ but I wasn’t too far off according to the online Merriment Dictionary that says “overcome with emotion; choked up”. The song is deeply moving. I didn’t do any research on its backstory, so I appreciate you providing a synopsis on it. Have a terrific Thursday, my friend, an thanks for visiting!
