Summer Unofficially Begins Now

Good morning, Kittens and Dawgs! For many this weekend is nothing more than a time to spend with family lounging around the house or grilling in the backyard or hitting the lake but it’s much more. It’s a time to remember and honor those who sacrificed everything in order for us to sit in our PJs all day or flip burgers or take a dip. I dedicate this post to the countless heroes who paid the price for the freedoms I enjoy.  May God bless those called to arms to continue the fight to protect this great nation, my home sweet home!

It’s fabulous to see you! I think most of y’all are kinda like me, you associate Memorial weekend with the unofficial start of summer.  This week’s theme is “your choice” mewsic picks.  Please join my fellow co-hosts: XmasDolly (Party Coordinator), Stacy, & Michelle filling in for Colette while on blog leave for medical reasons on the dance floor! 1. What an awesome playlist you have there, Cathy! I had no idea Keith Carradine could carry a tune! 🙂 Thanks for the dance! 🙂

  2. Hey Cathy,
Hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. And you’re right, it does usually mark the beginning of summer. At least that’s how I felt when I lived up north. But now that I’m here in Texas, I just think of it as the kickoff to Hell…I don’t know why I live here in this heat. I’m for sure more suited for a cold climate. I ask myself this every year at this time when it starts getting ridiculously hot out.. 🙂

Anyway, Love your playlist! I had forgotten all about Keith Carradine! I know the song “I’m Easy” but I don’t think I ever made the connection between the song artist and the actor! I don’t know that I even knew Keith Carradine had a singing career. I only know him as an actor so this was a cool surprise.

I haven’t heard Al Stewart in YEARS! And Year of the Cat: that’s so YOU!! Great song!

Your playlist is great all around. Grover Washington: whatever happened to him? “Just the Two of Us” — so good. This is bringing back memories!
    My favorites of your compliation here are: Ace’s “How Long” – I used that song in a battle last year. I liked seeing the live performance of it so thanks for picking that for your playlist;
Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” has always been one of my favorites and every single time I hear that song, I get all kinds of good feelings. Warm fuzzies throughout: lots of memories.
And Al Stewart’s “Year of the Cat” — I can’t even tell you the last time I heard that song and I know I wouldn’t have thought about it on my own. I completely forgot about Al Stewart. That piano really grabs hold of me in this song.
And okay, everyone needs a little Bread in their life…

Awesome list! I’ll be coming back to listen to this over and over again. And I have a feeling that I’ll be digging into some Grover Washington over this coming week too..
    Great job!

Was going to say have a great week but it’s almost half over already! I always get behind on holiday weekends…
Hope you enjoy what’s left of the week… 🙂

    1. Michele,

I didn’t know Keith Carradine was a singer, either. Actually, when I listened to this oldie I kept thinking, “Is he related to David?” I just couldn’t place Keith in the acting role starring at a younger portrait. It wasn’t until I looked him up on Wikipedia seeing more recent photos of him giving my memory a little jiggle. Interestingly, Keith made two albums. I’m Easy (1974) and Lost & Found (1978). I skipped through both albums on iTunes. None of the other songs sounded familiar but I did give it a quick listen. “I’m Easy” hit the top of the Easy Listening Chart in 1976. It was from his movie, “Nashville”.

Time really does warp the memory. “Year of the Cat” is one of the songs I totally forgot. It made for a happy discovery. According to Wiki, Grover Washington died in 1999 from a massive heart attack after The Saturday Early Show at CBS studios. I found a Best of GWJr album playlist which I’m currently listening to while I finish up. I didn’t realize that Grover had a several #1 jazz hits. He was a heck of a sax player! I knew someone used Ace’s “How Long” in BoTB. It’s hard for me to keep all the showdowns straight but then I’m sure I’m not alone. 🙂

The holiday weekend gives us a short work week which is okay by me. I like having DH around and I always miss him after spending a long weekend with him. Although, it looks like rain this weekend, I’m sure we’ll find something interesting to do together. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor. Enjoy what’s left of the week, my friend!

  3. “50,000 names” was a new song for me and it reminded me of my visit to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC back in 1999. It’s amazing the power this memorial has over those who visit. Saw a couple of old favs in your playlist that I haven’t heard in years – How Long (Ace) and Year of the Cat (which I associate with visiting a relative I had back when in Iowa). You have a mewsical week in our first unofficial week of summer, too.

    1. Alana,

Oh, I can only imagine the stir of emotions visiting the Vietnam Memorial in DC. I am moved every time I visit local memorials, especially when they have miniature flags on each grave.

  4. Hi Cathy, it’s warming up here in Scotland too, and everything is looking brighter. I love that song you shared and it really took me back to 1991 when I was in America and visited the Wall. It’s such a heartbreakingly beautiful memorial to America’s sons and daughters.
    Have a lovely week.

    1. Pamela,

Thank you for joining me on the dance floor. Although it’s been green and warm here in East Tennessee for awhile, I noticed while in the upper elevations of the mountains over the weekend that the trees were all lively compared to our previous trip up a month earlier. The mountains are always slow to burst forth full of spring and it’s always a nice surprise to see the lush mountainside.

  5. Great tunes in the list, and I forgot they were all from the ’70’s. I kept thinking “hey wait, that’s from the ’60’s/’80’s,” but all were ’70’s tunes. Funny how your mind plays tricks like that. Hope your Memorial Day is going well…

    1. John,

I get mixed up on which decade some songs are in, too. I often have to double check with Google to make sure my memory is right. It’s been wonderful having you as honorary co-host, my friend. You’ve done a fabulous job!

  6. It’s starting to feel more like summer. Summer has been on my mind a lot lately as I start thinking about planning our trip back east.

    1. Lee,

It’s really feeling like summer here. I’ll say some extra prayers for you guys. I hope y’all have a safe and fun trip back this way, dear friend!

  7. I truly enjoyed your selection and it’s always good to have a reminder as to what today is really about! My brother was in the Viet Nam war, but he was on a supply ship, but without him I guess our soldiers on land would’ve suffered even more. My dad fought in WWII and he was a cook and linesman, but we all have our jobs to help one another and isn’t that what citizenship is all about! Helping our fellow citizens. Republican or Democrat the two names should be dropped so we can all get along and fight for the same things. GOD BLESS AMERICA & GOD BLESS AMERICAN CITIZENS AS ONE! And God bless you my friend… have a great day … hugs

    1. Marie,

I’m very grateful for the roles your brother and dad played in fighting for freedom. You’re right, everyone can’t be on the battlefield. I have three uncles who were in the Viet Nam conflict – all going hand-to-hand with the enemy. My grandfather was I served in WWII but I don’t know anything about what he did and my FIL was in fixing to deport to European as an airplane gunner when WWII came to an end. My family has a long list of servicemen/women that I can’t even keep up with but to my knowledge, everyone kept safe in the line of fire. Our country shouldn’t be divided by party lines. We should come together as a collective body but that’s not realistic with the diversity of ideas. It makes me think of like kids on the playground who can’t get along. Thanks for joining me on the dance floor, my friend!

    1. Mary,

The sacrifice our men/women make on this nation’s behalf should be tribalized 365 days a year in one’s heart. I think it’s easy to see the past as just that a long time ago and if we forget our past then we’re doomed to seeing history repeat. Standing vigilant to protect our liberties is an on-going duty. Thanks for stopping by to share in my Memorial Day tribute and then partying with me on the dance floor!

    1. Eugenia,

I appreciate your visit on Memorial Day. I’m actually surprised more people stopped yesterday than I thought. I figured everyone would be doing other things away from home but it looks like I was wrong. What’s that, I was wrong? Who said? Oh…I did. *hee-hee* Have a fabulous week and thanks for dancing with me.

    1. Ellen,

Thanks for joining me on the dance floor yesterday. “Year of the Cat” popped up on my radar while at YouTube. That’s how I came up with my playlist going from one 70s tune to another. 🙂 Of course, I knew this song would appeal to you and other feline lovers!

  8. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for reminding us of the real meaning of Memorial Day, dear friend. I enjoyed your mewsical selections for the kick-off of the summer season. Strange as it now seems, I didn’t own or listen to albums released by Kool And The Gang back in the 70s. I liked a few of their early funk singles but lost interest in the band when they adopted a more mellow sound. Therefore, until recently, I had never heard “Summer Madness,” a jazz-informed tune from their album Light of Worlds. I think this is the third time a friend has posted it in the last year. It’s refreshing! Mrs. Shady and I both love Dustin Hoffman’s performance in Midnight Cowboy and it was exciting to hear the Grammy Award winning song from the film “Everybody’s Talkin'” by Harry Nilsson. Another song that takes me back is David Gates, lead singer of Bread, singing “The Goodbye Girl,” the hit theme song from the 1977 film of the same name that stars Richael Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason. Soft rock is not my favorite mewsical style, but “How Long” by Ace was and still is one of my favorite songs of any genre. I never get tired of listening to it and I enjoyed this live version. “Summer Breeze” by Seals And Crofts, made Rolling Stone’s list of Best Summer Songs of All Time. The duo also gave us “Diamond Girl” and Mrs. Shady #1 was very fond of them. By the way, you have “Summer Breeze” listed, but it is not in rotation on your actual play list.

Thank you again for the Memorial Day mewsic and memories, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

Thanks for pointing out “Summer Breeze” was missing from my playlist. I think that happened when I added it to another playlist and accidentally unchecked it to show on this one. I didn’t realize I did that and it’s now showing. Seals and Crofts have some mewsic. This might be my favorite by them but Mrs. Shady’s fave is a great song, too. Their voices are a purrfect match up. I haven’t seen the movie MIDNIGHT COWBOY but I do recall “Everybody’s Talkin” coming out. For years I kept associating that song with Glen Campbell for some reason. Although, I’m very familiar with the song “The Goodbye Girl” that’s another movie that I did not see. Richard Dreyfuss is an excellent actor. Have you seen him in the STAKE-OUT films with Emilio Estevez? Those are great movies! Thanks for making time to stop by yesterday. I’m glad you enjoyed my song choices. Have a good week, my friend!
