Staycation to Death in the Family {RTT}

September 1-11 was our block of time for our second staycation while our darling kiddo spent his end of summer break with his grandparents. This is something we do not get on a regular basis despite our son’s age. lol.  We delivered our son to his grandparents on Friday, then jetted back home while making a lovely diversion to visit our dear friends in western North Carolina.  You may recall I mentioned making an Italian Cream Cake to take to their home from last week’s post.  I’m delighted to report, my culinary attempt was a success – everyone enjoyed it.

The weekend went off without a hitch.  We enjoyed dining at one of our favorite restaurants Saturday night, Copper Cellar and then on Sunday we grabbed some hamburgers for the first time at Five Guys, which was good – not as good as homemade, but better than quick burgers!

Monday was a very rainy Labor Day and we discovered a new roof leak. sigh My darling husband and son spent last fall replacing the roof vent because of the poor design was the culprit of the leaking problems. The repair seemed to do well until now. We don’t know if it’s been damaged or its a torn shingle or what. Hopefully, this weekend we can figure this out.

Back to Labor Day activities.  Tropical Storm Lee was over top of us and was letting us have it big time forcing us to stay home all day. That was quite okay, too. It was nice to have a leisurely day around the house with my husband.

Tuesday morning, the rain continued. By early afternoon, the storm began to break up and we ventured out to the Fresh Market in search of Jarlsberg cheese after being introduced to it by our friends.  This is the best Swiss cheese we have ever eaten. We had good fortune in finding it at the Fresh Market, as hoped. FYI…Sam’s Club has it at a very good price and we plan to make a special trip to buy some with a free day pass I found on the net.

We were driving along Kingston Pike after getting our cheese when my phone rang. It was my daughter, Nicole. She was crying.

Me: What’s wrong?
Nicole: I have some sad news.
Me: What’s that? (I braced myself thinking the news was about her…or her boyfriend…or my other daughter.)
Nicole: Hope (my niece) tried calling you. Grandpa Crockett (this is her great-grandpa) died. You need to call grandma (my mom).

I knew Grandpa’s day were numbered because of declining health. I still wasn’t prepared to get the news.  I choked back the tears, I wanted to comfort her.  It was important that she understood Grandpa was now in heaven.

The rest of the week was literally gray and despite learning of my grandpa’s death, we did our best to enjoy most of our time together.  I knew Grandpa wouldn’t want us to be sad.  Instead of mourning our loss, we celebrated his life. Sometimes, we laughed and other times we cried.

I dedicate this song to my grandpa…Crockett Hagerman an old-time preacher man from the rural hills of McDowell County in West Virginia who served the Lord with his whole heart, soul, body, and mind.

Grandpa,  I shall miss you, but my love for you lives on. Until we see each other again, let me say good-bye!

I’ve rebelled with the help of Stacy Uncorked (thanks, Stacy! ) since Keely @ UnMom has taken a break. This is my time to let go. I know, you’ll feel right at home with the rest of us, as you unleash your randomness. You won’t run into any odd ball looks here because anything goes! C’mon on, join the weekly fun with this cool meme and tell Stacy, “Cathy sent ya!”
