Similar Band Names, Different Artists

Are you off the floor now?  🤣  Greetings y’all!  We’re in the 11th month of this not-so-new year.  Welcome to Monday’s Music Moves Me.  This week we’re boogieing with special honorary co-hostess Sandee from Comedy Plus to whatever music moves you!  Are you ready to get this party started?

I’m pulling content stuck in drafts for months.  Tom from SPMM shared a song by an English all girl band from the 60s known as The Paper Dolls covering “My Boyfriend’s Back“.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, musicians from yesterday are a million times better than artists today.  I wanted to sample more tunes by TPD on YouTube.  Not paying too much attention, I clicked the first video.  It turned out to not be the band I wanted but I’ll get back to that in a moment.  I found The Paper Dolls’ UK Top 20 hit (peak position #11) debut song,  “Something Here In My Heart (Keeps a-Tellin’ Me No)”.

As previously mention, I clicked on a video thinking I was listening to the 60s UK girl band but it wasn’t.  In fact, the band discovery is a current upcoming group with a very similar name, known as the Paper Dolls Band. Notice “The” is not apart of this bands name and the video I clicked is an original bluegrass song that I’m sharing below.  The song is about a love that’s gone wrong with no hope insight leaving the author to pray for rain.  The lyrics version of this song is here, if you’d care to read along while you listen or just click below to play the non-lyrical recording.

Paper Dolls “Pray For Rain”

The new bluegrass sound really appeals to me the more I listen to it.  It’s not at all like old school bluegrass.  Now curious with this discovery, I see there is another similar band name, a 90s pop British girls’ band which falls into the Forgotten Pop Band category called Paperdolls.  “Gonna Make You Blush” released in the last quarter of 1998.  The song spent 2-weeks on the charts peaking at position 65.

In my search I discovered another band, maybe two with similar spellings but the music didn’t catch my ears right and then I found a few song titles using any form of these spellings.  The Mills Brothers recorded the original, Paper Doll, in 1942 and it has been covered about four dozen times by various artists/genres.  Fleetwood Mac released a song with the same name, Paper Doll, in 1992 which I do not remember.  It achieved some success here in the states and in Canada. John Mayer wrote Paper Doll in 2010 about ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift and in 2015 Bea Miller recorded her original song with a not so original song title, Paper Doll.  Based on the lyrics, I suspect it’s a song to empower girls with little self-esteem, perhaps those constantly torn or push down by others.  It has a catchy melody while encouraging young women that enough is enough.  Believing in oneself starts with you, don’t be subjected to unfair criticism.

This is a music linky party.  Your co-hostess are StacyAlana, and myself.   Every other week we have a suggested music theme to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our music enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

I’m taking a mini-hiatus but I’ll be back mid-week with another edition in my Maine Vacation 2022 photo memory series. I hope you enjoyed today’s song picks. Thanks for joining the party. This is CAAC signing off,  have a boogietastic week! X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. MOL…that horse is nekkid..MOL…The Papurr Dolls are so new to us, but we sure enjoyed them, CK, especially the last Papurrs and their dance😸Double Pawkisses from us to you🐾😽💞

  2. A complete history of paper doll music! Seriously, who would have thought that so many groups would have come up with with similar band names and ditto for various “Paper Doll” songs. For the latter, nothing beats The Mills Brothers’ 1942 classic with those harmonies. I liked all of them.

    1. Alana,

I enjoyed putting this post together. It’s fun to learn about new to me artists and songs. I love the harmonies of the Mills Brothers, too!

  3. I laughed out loud with your funny horse. Adorable too. I linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Love both videos. Never heard either of them before.

Have a fabulous Mondays Music Moves Me and week, Cathy. Big hug. ♥

  4. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Paw-some 4M Monday, dear friend! I hope you and DH had a nice weekend.

Awww… I just wanna smooch that nekked horsey! That picture reminds me of the song “Splish Splash (I was takin’ a bath).”

Now that you’ve switched the 4M feature back to Monday, I need to let you know that, starting next week and every 4th week thereafter, I will be very late getting here to read, listen and comment. I have a regularly scheduled medical procedure early Monday morning every four weeks. So please remember next week when I don’t show up right away that I am undergoing treatment.

It always pleases me greatly when you enjoy artists I introduce on SPMM and get Curious as a Cathy about their other recordings. in the early 2010s, I went through a Brit pop phase and collected many various artists CD compilations of English pop girl groups. That’s how I discovered The Paper Dolls. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to their biggest hit and best known song ‘Something Here In My Heart,” a record that approached the top 10 on the UK chart in the spring of 1968. You found a video with excellent sound quality. As I listened, I could picture the girl trio in front of me and to the left with the stereo sound separation putting the orchestra in my right ear. It was pure joy listening to the ladies singing in harmony and accompanied by those punchy trombones and other instruments in the horn section. Over the years, I have encountered hundreds of great British recordings that I have not used on the blog because they are in desperate need of remixing and remastering. The recordings of less well known British female pop artists and groups like The Paper Dolls tend to be a neglected category when it comes to such audio enhancement work.

Man oh man oh man, Cathy! Your second featured act with a similar band name has a completely different sound and I absolutely love it. Paper Dolls, the Nashville-based bluegrass trio, is sensational They are attractive as can be and their singing and playing is so heartfelt and beautiful that it brought me to tears. Those glorious string instruments, the fiddle played by Bethany Faith and bass played by Daniel Kelley, danced around in my head on that excellent recording, and lead singer Victoria Grace’s voice burrowed into my soul. The production on their video is first rate, and they have a super slick, beautiful and tasteful website welcoming visitors with the following words:

“We are The Paper Dolls: storytellers, with heartfelt songs, truth, written on our hearts. Bringing our deepest emotions and relatable feelings all to the words of a song. Recreating life experiences and feelings while bringing new life, creativeness and colorful imagination to the songs we write. From our hearts, thru a song, to your ears.”

Just look how striking their website is. It makes a very favorable impression:

Paper Dolls, the bluegrass trio, is an act that I will surely follow. If they aren’t already hugely successful, they certainly deserve to be. They are one of the biggest discoveries of the 2020s and I thank you very much for introducing them this morning.

I also very much enjoyed the third act with a similar name, Paperdolls, one of the groups that emerged around the same time as All Saints, the act I reported on a few weeks ago, as part of the 1990s wave of British girl groups.

Yessum, I remember artist Bea Miller. I posted one of her songs on my old blog in the fall of 2016.

Well, this was a fantastic edition of 4M, Cathy. I enjoyed all three groups and admire you for doing do much research. The post is loaded with interesting information. Have a wonderful week, dear friend, and I’ll join you Wednesday on the next leg of your New England adventure!

    1. Tom,

I appreciate how much you enjoyed this week’s artist/song picks. I can’t get too much over on you. The bluegrass trio won me over instantly and I’m glad you liked them just as much. Thanks for sharing their website. It is very nice looking. Thanks for letting me know about your appointment next Monday. I hope everything goes well. My blog door is always open so don’t rush it, just stop in when you can. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!
