Howdy -hi, folks! Thank you for including me in your Saturday. This is an old weekly meme I kicked off several years ago that fizzled out in my routine but I am giving it another shot with the hopes to bringing a featured artist to you each week.
Today’s music inspiration came from listening to 80s on 8 with the song My Heart Skips a Beat. Who other than me doesn’t remember The Cover Girls? Everything about the 80s I loved…well, that’s how I choose to remember the decade. The entertainment industry was at the top of their A-game with music especially being the berries. I had to know more about this girl band and you know whatever I learn I share with my peeps. Today’s music playlist consists of their best song titles from the US Singles and Dance charts. Get ready to get to your feet with The Cover Girls!
The girls making up The Cover Girls exclude Margo in the above photo. Margo was added to group in late 1987 after Sunshine left the band. I’m running terribly short on time this week but if you’d like to read more about The Cover Girls, you can learn about them on Wiki.
That’s it for this Saturday. Did you vote in my Oct. 1st BOTB yet? If not, I hope you’ll take a moment to pick your favorite artist in my latest battle showdown! I’ll be back tomorrow with Monday’s Music Moves Me on Sunday with your choice song picks. I’m saving a dance for you, so come join me on the dance floor. Have a songsational Saturday! x💋x💋, Cathy

These ladies didn’t hit my radar, either, but thank you for showcasing them!
I don’t remember the Cover Girls. With that said, I agree with Thomas Anderson about the song “We Can’t Go Wrong”. Very apt for what is going on in the US today. Take care and stay safe!
I don’t remember the Cover Girls either but I do understand why!
Hi, Cathy!
I need a little Songsuasion this morning to start my weekend, so here I am, dear friend!
Yessum, I often say that the 80s were the last great decade in mewsic. (My current showender by Crazy Lixx makes that same assertion.) I do indeed remember The Cover Girls, exponents of the Latin freestyle movement that emerged in the late 80s and lasted through the early 90s. The girl group is featured in the 2015 documentary Legends of Freestyle. Over the years, I have posted a few freestyle hits at Shady’s Place and will continue to do so in the future. The Cover Girls videos you posted were played regularly on the MTV style station where I worked at the time. The first one, “Show Me,” was the most popular of all. The Cover Girls and other freestyle girl groups and solo female artists imitated the sound of Madonna’s huge 80s dance hits, changing the style a bit with arrangements that featured a distinctive, irresistible Latin rhythm. That’s my interpretation of the genre.
To me, the words and images to the song “We Can’t Go Wrong” can be applied to today’s divided America. They remind us how good it will feel the moment we stop pulling apart, pivot, and start moving back together again as a people united.
Now I don’t want to tell you how to live
Don’t want to put the blame
But don’t you think it’s time for you and I
To try to make a change
We can’t go wrong
[Loving one another]
We can’t go wrong
[Caring for each other]
We can’t go wrong
If the love we have is real
We can’t go wrong
There was a time when things were better than the way they are today
But we forgot the vows we made and love got lost along the way
Now I can tell just by the way you look at me that you feel the same
So don’t you think it’s time for you and I to try to make a change
My favorite Cover Girls hit is “Funk Boutique.” It really cooks.
I love your closing meme of the lazy kitty thinking about engaging in rigorous activity followed by a shower, then promptly dismissing the thought.
Have a happy Saturday, dear friend Cathy. No doubt I will be back tamale for your 4M Monday on Sunday!
