Revisiting the Church in the Valley #WW

Hello, kittens & dawgs! It’s hump day already. As the old saying goes, it’s all down here the rest of the way. I’m ready to slide right into Friday, aren’t  you?

This month I’m taking a look back on photos I posted or ran short on time to share. Regardless of which category my images fall under; new-to-you or not, I’m doing a Revisiting series and I hope you enjoy taking a peek. This morning, I’m Revisiting the Church in the Valley.

The first church in the valley is a Methodist Church. I never thought much about the double doors until I learned the duel entrance was used as a divider for male and female members.

In the valley of the Smoky Mountains lies the community of Cades Cove. It’s a popular tourist destination for campers, hikers, bikers, and auto tours. The pioneering community was home to almost 700 people in 1850 and the history of its people is fascinating.

The wooden pews and pulpit have a humble beauty.
The cemetery behind the Methodist Church has about 100 graves and is the second oldest grave site in Cades Cove.

I imagine the church bell was heard throughout the cove to announce Sunday meetings or to gather the folks in the pioneer community for emergencies.

These photos originally appeared in Prayer of repentance. Thanks for stopping by and making me a part of your day.

Sending a round of applauds and cheers to this week’s featured photographer…

  1. Love this, as I do every day’s post here. I also nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award, o my page today. Thank you for inspiring me every day, and congratulations, Cathy!

    1. Dixie, I’m humbled by your generosity in presenting me with the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. I feel undeserving of the honors, but gladly accept and hope I can continue to live up to this standard in your eyes. Thank you so much!:D

  2. I’ve driven by that church many a time and stopped in to look at it a few. Never gave any thought to the doors though. Strange to have thought that they were thinking that way back then.

  3. the shot of the church is beautiful — and especially that close up of the steeple and bell!! really – separate doors for men and women? But they could sit together, or did they have to sit on opposite sides of the church? that would be some interesting historical research!
    Thanks for featuring me!! 🙂
