Retro Motown style of Mayer Hawthorne Tuesday Tunesation

Good morning Kittens and Dawgs! Starting now and until further notice, I’m gonna pulled together multiple daily posts into a single post. I am preparing for April’s A-Z Challenge right now and then next month I’ll be busy with the month long hop.  Anywho, I’m delighted you stopped in to listen to this morning’s featured artist.

Last week’s Ink Interrupted Coffee Chat got postponed. Les experienced a  blog shut issues. That prompt is today’s topic but mine went live last week after I learned of her problems and if you missed it then you can read my response, here.

This morning’s singer (new-to-me) is a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, audio engineer, producer, multi-instrumentalist. He sounds a bit like a one-man band, doesn’t he? 🙂

Crank up the volume and get ready to dance to this playlist of the new retro Motown style of Mayer Hawthorne!

Playlist tracks: 1. Man About Town 2. Cosmic Love 3. Book of Broken Hearts 4. Breakfast in Bed 5. Lingerie & Candlewax 6. Fancy Clothes 7. The Valley 8. Love Like That 9. Get You Back 10. Out Of Pocket

What did you think of this morning’s musical guest?

That’s a wrap for now. I’m hopping over to Stacy’s for Random Tuesday Thoughts and I hope you’ll join me at midnight for a Double Feature post with not-so Wordless Wednesday & BoTB! 😉

Have a tunesational day!

  1. I am looking forward to the A-Z challenge, although I wish they were still having a list instead of having to add a daily link.

  2. Hi, Cathy!

Mrs. S and I are traveling today and need to hit the road soon. It’s a good thing I got up an hour early so that I could sample some of these songs before we leave.

Mayer Hawthorne, an artist that is brand new to me, is one that I would not have wanted to miss. I only had time to listen to the first dozen songs, and it was very hard for me to break away. It’s a sure bet that I will be looking him up on YouTube, listening to more of his releases and adding his albums and EPs to my personal collection.

I can tell you that I love Mayer’s nostalgic soul style. He does an excellent job of capturing in his vocals the vintage sound of Detroit and Chicago soul, especially the singing style of Chicago soul legend Curtis Mayfield.

Mayer’s videos are slick and clever. Standouts, and there are many among the dozen I watched, include “Love Like That,” “A Long Time” which features a gang of young dancers on a music TV show that resembles Soul Train and even includes a retro commercial at the end, “Her Favorite Song” which features a bunch of dogs hanging out in a club and sipping drinks, “No Strings,” “Time For Love” which truly captures the brassy sound of smooth 70s soul, “Henny and Gingerale” and “Cosmic Love” which is pure Curtis Mayfield.

Mayer Hawthorne’s vocals remind me of Justin Timberlake and also remind me of a Canadian duo called Chromeo. It is encouraging to find new artists, groups and bands that are taking the best mewsic of the past and giving them a fresh update.

I thoroughly enjoyed this morning’s concert, Cathy. Thank you! Remember that I will be on the road tomorrow and will need to listen to your BOTB selections on a laptop with lower quality sound. Nevertheless, I will get here when I can and look forward to listening to what you have in store for us. Have a super day!

    1. Tom,

Thank you for catching this morning’s post before you hit the road. It makes me happy that you enjoyed this new-to-me artist. Mayer’s throwback style is excellent and I’ve been enjoying his YouTube playlist again while I visit fellow bloggers today. No worries with you being on the go and you’re certainly welcome to wait until you return home to listen to my March 1st BoTB contenders. Have a good time and be safe!

      1. Hi, again, Cathy! I forgot to mention two other artists Mayer Hawthorne sounds like and/or reminds me of: Kool and the Gang (during that band’s smoother pop soul period) and a fine young Canadian blue-eyed soul singer of the 2010s, Francesco Yates.
