My Once Little Girls

It is now day 7 of the A to Z Challenge.  Where did the week go, right?  I revitalized my original pencil sketch I loosely based on my once little girls.  In the first illustration, I think I like the facial expressions on these little girls much better.  I changed the direction of the driveway leading it toward the back of the house.  The blank space in the original on the right side of the image bothered me so I fixed that by adding another tree to my final recreation.  Colorizing these early designs definitely bring to life the illustrations, don’t you agree?

In the first sketch I drew the dresses more alike.  It wasn’t uncommon for me to dress my daughters similarly but I decided to make a slight modification.  I used their favorites colors to tint their little dresses, except for the exact shade of green for DD#2. She prefers emerald green but that’s a bit too much for a little girl.  Spring green seemed perfect!

I’ll wind things down with a song by Reba McEntire that fits beautifully with my art theme, “I’ll Be”. If you’re a mother of daughters then you know just how true the lyrics spoken are in this song.  Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your day.  I’m heading over to the A2Z headquarters to leave my calling card and maybe I’ll take notice to see who else came to the party.  This is CAAC signing off, I’ll be back tomorrow with the next letter in the alphabet!

This song is a reminder that a mom is there for their daughters through it all. Here are the lyrics.

  1. This is a very sweet drawing of your daughters. It shows love and caring. I like Reba( loved her tv show) and this song touched my heart..I miss my mom.

  2. It’s delightful to see two barefoot girls, holding hands, near a hopscotch drawing. That would have been a dream for me, who grew up in New York City (my barefoot feet would have been burnt to a crisp by the hot sidewalks). I’m really late getting to you but I’ll be back! 3. Like you, I also like the girls’ expressions in the first drawing slightly better. It’s probably the way they smile. I’m not a big fan of open-mouth smiles but that’s just me.

For the colors, maybe the girls should wear different colors as they blend into the background or is that the point here? I find choosing colors the hardest part of creating a drawing.

    Have a lovely day.

  4. Hi Cathy! This is a lovely tribute to your daughters. Looks like you’ll ace the A to Z Challenge once again this year. All the best to you!

  5. This so reminds me of my sister and I. We had matching dresses more times than not. Mom would get fabric from flour sacks and makes us clothes. The painting is lovely.

  6. Very nice sketch. Sorry I have been missing your posts, I stopped blogging while my Sammy was sick. XO

  7. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Friday and G-Day, dear friend!

I’m beginning to realize how great an idea this was for your A to Z Challenge. You are putting the finishing touches on old works of art and reintroducing them to us In Living Color. They look much better now that they have been completely fleshed out. I like the improvements you made to the composition depicting your two daughters as girls joining hands and posing in front of the house. I agree that the shade of green you selected for your younger daughter’s dress blends in better than emerald green would have, and the addition of a tree on the right side of the illustration was a good idea, making the scene more balanced. It’s delightful, and I hope you will show it to DD #1 and DD #2 as well as to LA so that she can see how mommy looked as a young girl.

Reba is my favorite country and country crossover artist. I admire her beautiful singing voice but, most of all, her strength, maturity and spirituality. She brings dignity to her work, raises the bar and sets a high standard for other artists of the genre. As I listened to “I’ll Be” and watched the video, it didn’t take long for it to get to me and have me feeling it deep down inside. It shows what a good woman means to her family. She is the glue that keeps it together. She is there to give comfort, consolation, advice and encouragement. When life beats you up and everyone else abandons you, your mama will still be there for you. It’s a wonderful song and video.

On a side note, I learned from another friend that there has been no email notification about my new post this week. I just wanted to inform you that I have a new one up and running the last couple of days. Iris West awaits you, and I hope you can find time to swing by and check out her first SPMM show. There’s no great hurry, because the post runs through the weekend and Monday. Just letting you know.

Thank you for the morning smiles and entertainment, dear friend Cathy, and have a safe and happy weekend!
