Intriguing cover of this famous poem. Back in the 2011-2015 (150th anniversary Civil War anniversary) era when I did weekly “Civil War Sunday” posts I did a post on the Longfellow poem this song is based on. Arlee gave a nice summary so I’ll just add that I liked this cover.

Interesting version of this song. The poem on which it is based is quite beautiful with a stirring message.

      Lee,

I didn’t know this song was based on poem, so I had to learn more. Wikipedia says it’s a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who penned the words in 1863 after losing his wife in a fatal fire and then with the news that his son enlisted to fight in the Civil War. About a decade later his poem was set to mewsic by an English organist and around mid-20th century it took an additional mewsical arrangement by Johnny Marks. I wanted to listen to Marks’ version when I found this beautifully done video on YouTube…
