From Chats on the Farmhouse Porch to Wayback Wednesday

“The only reason people get lost in thought is because it’s unfamiliar territory.”   unknown

Patrice created a new weekly meme, which I’m taking part in. Incidentally, I like the name of this new meme, don’t you? I mean, how cozy is it or what?  After all, aren’t we chatting ?  We take the time to hop from one blog to another in the spirit of love and friendship as we encourage and support one another with comments.  Come sit with me on Patrica’s farmhouse porch, as we answer her questions of the week.

1. What season was your wedding? If you aren’t married, the what season is your birthday?

Late spring on June 9th.  Thankfully, it was not too hot when we exchanged wedding vows. However, we did get some rain showers and lets just say, being showered by rice on top of that wasn’t a good combination.  We had rice stuck in all places — down my dress, on Robin’s eyeglasses, in the folds of my purse, inside Robin’s shirt pocket, … It did make for a good reminder days later when I found a tiny grain someplace I wasn’t expecting, though, which prompted a smile.

2.What names did you call your grandparents?(ie grandma, granny, gran, grammie)

We always called our grandparents – grandma & grandpa, even when my great-grandparents were a live and that got confusing.  I would say something like Grandma did so-and-so, then I’d have to stop to correct myself by saying and Great-Grandma…And what about when both sets of grandparents were together? I just don’t know why it caused a state of confusion in my brain, but it really rattled me some reason.  Oh well…my great-grandparents have long passed this life into heaven years ago and I miss them, but one day I’ll see them again. For now, I can continue to enjoy what time I have left with my darling grandparents.

3.What’s your favorite smell that comes from your oven?

I love just about any smell the oven omits, but I’d have to say my most favorite would be biscuits and then closely tied second place would cookies, pies, or cakes.  The aroma coming from an oven sends such a cozy comforting sensation throughout the home & spirit.

4.If you eat eggs, which do you like scrambled, fried, over easy, sunny side up, or other?

Absolutely, I eat eggs and I love them many ways – scrambled, fried, omelets,…At the moment, I prefer to boil them because I’m continuing my weight loss fight.  Yeah, it’s a never-ending battle, but I’m determined to win. =D

5.What’s the tidiest room in your house? What’s the messiest?

Oh my! Well, the tidiest room has to be our bedroom and the messiest would be my son’s room.  You know how teenagers are, especially teenage boys. Good grief, how on earth can he stand the mess? I’m not sure, but he calls it home. lol.  The next time he is out of the house, I’m going to rip through his room like a tornado and when something turns up missing then he’ll know he’d better stay on top of things or else.  Won’t he be surprised? Nah, not really. He’s come to half-expect such a devious action by me.

BTW, Patrica…I love what you’ve done with your Wednesday meme!  Thanks for keeping the fun going. =D

This Wednesday, she’s taking us back to 1984.  This is what I remember, well… after a bit of a refresher thanks to my visit at thepeoplehistory.com. Hey, there’s no shame in this! We all need help from time-to-time.

  • US News that stuck in people’s mind was…A man shoots 20 dead and wounds 16 in a McDonald’s restaurant in California. That was only the first act of many to follow. Today, it just doesn’t seem uncommon – tragic yes, unexpected no. We’ve all grown a little desensitized to the evils of this world, I believe.
  • I also remember that year, Russia boycott the summer Olympics games out of retaliation for the US’s boycott the previous Olympics.  Crazy, huh?
  • September of that year, terrorist attempted to plow through the US Embassy in Beirut with a truck carrying over a 1000 pounds of explosives. Guards opened fired to stop penetration, resulting in the vehicle exploding in front of the embassy.  Loss of life was minimal – 20 dead and dozens injured.
  • The Aids virus made headline news.
  • Ma Bell, as termed for AT&T broke up, creating hundreds of baby bells around the country sparking the beginning of competitive long distance phone rates for the first time.
  • Discovery Space Shuttle had its maiden voyage in August of that year.
  • DNA profiling development  was a huge break through for Forensic scientists in obtaining evidence in a crime.
  • Michael Jackson wins unprecedented acclaim for his album, Thriller which sold over 37 million copies. Whoo-hoo, that must have been a nice royalty check, don’t you imagine?
  • All around the globe everyone heard and knew about the Ethiopia famine, as  thirty-six of Britain and Ireland’s top pop musicians formed as a group called, Band Aid, recorded the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas” raising $14M for famine relief.

I’m a big movie buff! The 80s produced some of the best flicks.  In 1984 some of my all time favorites released:

Ghostbusters
Romancing the Stone
The Terminator
Beverly Hills Cops
Indiana Jones Temple of Doom

What do you remember from 1984?

  1. Thank for the follow, sorry it has taken me so long to get over to your blog, I am a new follower via GFC, Twitter (which I am always on) and Facebook.

  2. Hilary Grossman Married on the beach in Aruba sounds very romantic. If I had to do it all over, then I would have liked simple ceremony…maybe even eloping.  Wedding preparations can be such a pain! I had forgotten, I called my daddy’s mother “Nanny”. Thanks for reminding me.  She has been gone for 31 years, but the real thing is I wasn’t super close to her like I was with my mom’s mom.  Sometimes, when I think about the way my daddy laughs, it reminds me of my nanny. =D

  3. This is a fun meme!  Love your answers…. I was married five days after my birthday on the beach in aruba…I only new one grandparent, and I called her nanny

  4. Thanks for joining in. I like this better than the weight loss meme. I’m still fighting that battle, but this is friendlier without a dose of dieting guilt for some.

I’m with you about eggs. I love eggs. You can fix them just about anyway and I’ll happily eat them. I truly believe that they’re very nutritious. I have made Eggs Benedict for a brunch I catered. The entire party came into the kitchen to watch. I’ve gotten rather used to being on display. One house where I was employed was always being toured and I became a bit of a ham. 😉

  5. I will say that our house does stay a lot tidier with the lovelies living in their own homes. LOL

  6. I really enjoyed reading your answers this week. I really like reading about when people were married and what they called their grandparents.
I really like the 1984 questions too.
