Good morning, kittens & dawgs! I’m on a new kick in mewsic taking a look at international groups and artists for a change. I’m not sure how long this series will continue but for now enjoy the ride with the symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland.
Although Nightwish have been prominent in their home country since Angels Fall First, they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums Oceanborn (1998), Wishmaster (2000) and Century Child (2002). Their 2004 album, Once, has sold more than one million copies[2] and was the band’s breakthrough in the United States. Their biggest US hit single, “Wish I Had an Angel” (2004), received MTV airplay and included on three US film soundtracks to promote their North American tour.
Let’s kick this Saturday morning with Nightwish’s first US hit, Wish I Had An Angel!
The next two pieces of mewsic can be found on their 2015 Endless Forms Most Beautiful album.
The third song choice recorded by today’s featured group is from their 2007 Dark Passion Play album.
The last song featured today is the theme song for the 2007 Finnish movie, Lieksa.
I hope enjoyed the sound of Nightwish. That’s a wrap for this week. I hope you enjoyed your visit and I appreciate you including me in your weekend. I’ll see ya on Monday for Mewsic Moves Me. Have a songsational Saturday!

I like their sound and Wish I had an Angel. The guitarists pony tails on his beard creeps me out a little though 🙂
Ellen, Yeah I don’t like it, either. I don’t understand, hasn’t anyone every said, “Hey Dude, that just looks stupid!” Stuff like this makes me question someone’s judgment, you know? Oh well, the group does have some good mewsic. Thanks for stopping by for a visit and listen!
Hi, Cathy!
It’s 5-something am. I am guzzling robust black coffee and listening to the equally robust sounds of Nightwish, one of my favorite metal bands. I never would have suspected that your ears match mine on European metal, but here we are in sync with each other. It’s wonderful. I think too many people close their ears and their minds as soon as they see grimacing, intimidating looking Vikings with guitars. They get turned off and are unwilling to give this style of melodic, symphonic gothic power metal a chance to sink in. Those who are willing to open their ears, minds and souls to it will experience music filled with beauty, artistry, operatic vocals, great musicianship, drama, fire and passion. Magnificent symphonic recordings like these are commonly used in the soundtracks of today’s fantasy adventure films and audiences have no difficulty accepting them and enjoying them in that context.
“Wish I Had An Angel” treats us the outstanding singing of Tarja Turunen, the band’s lead singer until 2005, along with vocals by bassist Marco Hietala.
The songs “Élan” and “Alpenglow” from the latest Nightwish album, introduce the newest Nightwish frontwoman to date, Dutch singer Floor Jansen. In addition to owning several Nightwish CDs, I also have Wild Card, an album released by ReVamp, the band Floor Jansen fronted in the years before she became an official member of Nightwish.
“Amaranth” gives us a taste of vocalist Anette Olzon, the Nightwish frontwoman of the in-between years from 2007 to 2012.
Yessum, I enjoyed this early morning Nightwish concert a lot and I thank you for presenting it, dear friend Cathy. Have a super weekend!
Good morning Tom!
I’m glad you not only enjoyed Nightwish but already familiar with this band. Often I do not like the appearance of for metal groups sometimes I’m surprised by their sound and that’s when I have to shut my eyes and listen to only their mewsic. I recall some of the factoids you presented about the lead female vocalist but I thought the all the band members were from Finland, though. At some point, I may feature this band again. They had several other songs that caught my ear’s fancy and I want to share with others in the not-so-distant future I hope. We got up late this morning and just now having our first cup of coffee. 🙂 Have a good weekend, my friend!
