Monday's Music Moves Me

Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man

From 1997 in the Smoky Mountains community Cades Cove Daddy with my sister

Welcome to Monday’s Music Moves Me on Sundays!  Let me start by saying thanks to each of you for the warm wishes on our 45th wedding anniversary as well for the birthday wishes sent to my sister last week.  This week’s theme is dad for a Father’s Day Tribute.

My daddy didn’t have much of a father figure in his life.  His mother raised him and four siblings pretty much on her own.  Daddy was born in 1938.  He got as far as the 6th grade in school.  Living in rural West Virginia down a holler as the old timers would say, kids had to walk a long way to get to school.  I imagine education wasn’t top priority to those poor folks in those days.  What Daddy lacked in book knowledge,  he made up in spades with common sense.  Mom helped him with his reading after they got married (1960).  The only job I remember Daddy having was working in the coal mines which left him disabled with Black Lung in the mid 70s. When I was a kid, he loved going hunting.  I remember he’d bring home squirrels and I helped him to skin them a few times.  After I married, Daddy’s mining disability suit settled. My folks built their dream home on the land they bought from my great-grandparents years prior in southwestern Virginia.  It was in those years that followed that I recall him taking up deer hunting.  In my parents’ home there’s a big ole buck’s head mounted above the fireplace that Daddy so proudly put on display.  He tried his best to get me to eat Bambi but I didn’t want to have anything to do with it. lol The thing that warms my heart the most about my daddy is his walk with God. He loved the Lord and shared with others God’s word. For a man with little education, he could recite scripture like no other.  He did more than just share one on one, he was called to preach.  Daddy was an old time preacher man.  He spoke the words placed on his heart by the Almighty. I can’t think of any better way to pay tribute to my daddy than to share the Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton duet, “Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man”.

I’m doing things different this summer.  I love comments but it makes it difficult to truly to keep up with everyone while I’m taking a blogging break so I want to encourage you if you can to click the “like” button and if that doesn’t work just leave a smiley or thumbs up emoji in comments.  That’s all I need to know that you stopped by.

Have a boogietastic week, dear friends, and before I forget Marie wanted to tell y’all “Hello!”  She’s still not feeling quite herself, so please say a prayer for her. Happy Father’s Day to all the special Dads!

I originally drew this scene as a Procreate design for Daddy a few years ago. I used the Brushstrokes app Simple 6 brushstroke style to recreate the image. #TAD

Well now I’m singing Loretta Lynn. I think it says, “in a cabin, on a hill in Butcher Hollow” but I always thought it was Butcher Holler. 🙂 That’s a nice tribute to your father. 🙂 Wishing you a wonderful day.

You’re correct, Loretta does sing “Butcher Holler”. Incidentlly, your Gravatar link does not link to your profile. If you have a blog, then you may want to fix this for others to easily connect with you. Thanks for visiting, Rose!

An excellent and warm tribute to your Dad, full of heart and rich memories!

What a tough life so many have lived, but what great character that can often come from it.

Bless & Be Blessed, my Friend!!

What a simply awesome tribute to your father. I learned that we have something in common. My maternal grandfather was a coal miner in Oklahoma a generation before your father and like your dad, he had black lung disease. I probably grew up on preaching very similar to father’s messages, simple, straight to the point, and focused on the gift of eternal life that can only come from one source…Jesus Christ. Have a blessed week.

Thank you for sharing those sweet memories. It was a hard life for your Dad but he made himself into a good family man despite the obstacles in his life. And, the Bible has been a great resource and inspiration for many self educated people over the years. Enjoyed the song, too. I love Dolly Parton both as a singer and as a great woman.
