Cathy’s Pinup Girl #AtoZChallenge art sketch series (‘L’)

A Salute to my bloggers hosting these daily fun connection Happy Tuesdays – Sandee @ Comedy Plus and Random Tuesday Thoughts with Stacy Uncorked

How’s things going with this morning? All is well on this end, a little tired but hopefully a cup of coffee or two will fix me up in no time.

Today’s A to Z Challenge illustration is inspired by this photograph of Vera Ellen. You might recognize Vera from the first movie I ever saw her in, White Christmas playing Rosemary Clooney’s sister.

Original pencil drawing of my Liberty pin-up girl. Nope, not even close to the actual photograph. Hopefully, you find it as a lovely work of art and not a laughable one.
Getting a do-over using Procreate helps me to fine tune design flaws I find my pencil sketches. Although my Liberty girl’s dress isn’t like Vera’s I much prefer the change in this illustration over my first attempt.

My pinup girl doesn’t resemble Vera in the least but hopefully the spirit of my endeavor is appreciated. While I was snooping around on the net, I found Seven Things to Know about Vera-Ellen, if you’re interested in reading.

[tweetthis]I just visited Cathy’s Pinup Girl #AtoZChallenge #art sketch series, and I think you should, too! #libertygirl[/tweetthis]
This is a normal reaction of a cat. Can you imagine if it knew about such things as the Coronavirus?

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you enjoyed my ‘liberty pinup girl’ and laughs. You’ll find a list of of my previous A2Z posts in my side menu and remember to leave your footprints (direct URL) in comments so I can find my way back to you easily. Join me tomorrow for another illustration in Cathy’s Pinup Girls Art Sketch Series. Now, I will leave you with a new-to-me discovery Liberty X with “Holding On For You”.

X💋X💋, Cathy

  1. I love your pin up and I would never laugh and anyone who would is not worth your whistle. I am glad you gave her more “meat” on her bones. She had difficult times and I do believe she suffered from anorexia. In White Christmas and, I think, Call Me, Madam, she never has her neck shown. I think there is a scene in Call Me, Madam where you do see it but it looks “gauzy”. Later, I think she had a bit more weight so she could wear clothing that shows her neck and front. Her waist was supposed to be 17 inches! I think it was more likely 21 inches..still way too small. Now on a happier note, I love your comics which are too funny.

    1. Marie,

Love the vintage photo of two smokin’ hot Hollywood starlets! I sometimes sing ‘Happy Birthday’ Marilyn Monroe style to DH. He gets a kick out of that! lol

  2. Great job as usual girlfriend! Hey, I love Vera-Ellen. I see many of her movies. What a very talented person. It was only this year that I found out they dub her voice in when she is singing. She can’t sing! So sad, but what a great actress she is and I went to that website that tells all about her when she got divorced & died of ovarian cancer at only 60. Poor gal. She looked so sweet. I’m sure she was both on and off camera. Great drawing girlfriend I can see the progress every time I look at one of your drawings. Especially in the leg department. You’re getting so much better at it too. Luv ya gal. GREAT JOB! Have a nice evening and don’t forget TAKE CARE OF YOU FOR ME! HUGS

    1. Marie,

I forget how I learned that Vera-Ellen’s voice in White Christmas was dubbed in but that was a surprise discovery sometime after I started blogging. She was a pretty gal, wasn’t she?

  3. I love all the happiness here. Thanks! Hoping you have an amazing week with good health, great fun and lots of safe distancing. Virtual hugs across the miles.

    1. Anne,

Thanks for the visit and hugs. It’s always nice when a friend comes calling. All is well here, just trying to get things done on many levels and feel as though I’m drowning a little. Throw a life preserver this way! lol

  4. I got stuck on the funnies and didn’t comment on the awesome sketch. You’re doing so very well. I love pinups.

    Love and hugs. ♥

  5. I love all the funnies. You just have to laugh.

Thank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Happy Tuesday. Big hug my friend. ♥

    1. Brian,

I hope bell ringing doesn’t spook you, my furiend. I know loud sounds often startle felines. They startle me, too. After all I’m part cat…well my name is. Hee-Hee!

  6. Hi, Cathy!

    Happy “L” Day, dear friend!

Vera-Ellen was a cute woman, Yessum, it seems a hyphen actually belongs in her name – quite unusual. IMDB described Vera-Ellen as “One of the most vivacious and vibrant musical film talents to glide through Hollywood’s “Golden Age” in the 40s and 50s.” I also read that she was one of the youngest Rockettes. Sadly Vera-Ellen never became the star she should have been given her talent and she died young, at age 60, following a long bout with cancer. Your sketch, inspired by the picture of Vera-Ellen ringing the Liberty Bell, Is wonderful. I appreciate the dress you put on your Miss Liberty and how her legs are posed in a way that matches Vera’s stance in the picture. Great job, Cathy!

The dog and cat cartoons made me smile, and I absolutely loved the blending of voices on “Holding On For You,” a single by Liberty X that was hot on the UK chart at Christmas 2002 and into the early weeks of 2003. Liberty X is a new to me act. I read they are a British-Irish quintet that formed from the five finalists on the British talent show Popstars in the early 2000s. Liberty X has a great look and sound.

Enjoy your day and stay well, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

Gee, whiz, I didn’t notice the hyphen in Vera-Ellen! WOW, is my brain scrambled or what? I will correct my mistake pronto. Thanks for pointing my goof out. How cool she was a Rockette! I always wanted to be one when I was little but you know the way they dance has got to be hard on their legs, feet, entire body! But, WOW do they ever look sensational! I often wondered what became of her life. The big ‘C’ is an awful thing. Ovarian cancer has claimed many celebrities and mewsicians. Truly sad! Your encouraging words always lightens my heart each morning. I’m happy you like the new-to-me mewsic talent Liberty X. I didn’t have time to look into their background, so it was god that you shared some tidbits. I will have to make time to sample more of their mewsic when things slow down. Thank you for your support, dear friend. 🙂

  7. She looks like she is ringing out liberty for all the land, and that’s the point. Thanks for the laughs, and if you think a cat can jump when you sneeze, you should see our Horizon take off if lightning strikes too close to the house unexpectedly!

    1. Mimi,

I bet Horizon was doing a lot of jumping Sunday with those storms we got here. Did any of that mess hit y’all? Thank goodness we came through it okay! Thanks for dropping by and for your sweet words. 🙂
