Bread & Drink Art

Last week’s art prompt Rain’s Kitchen & Garden was bread and this week it is drinks.  I’m participating in the TAD every other week and am trying to incorporate both into one post.  These two make a great pair up.  The first thing I thought of is this print that given to us as a wedding gift a zillion years ago.

Grace is a photograph by Eric Enstrom (1918). It depicts an elderly man with hands folded, saying a prayer over a table with a simple meal.

The Bible gives a simple prayer easy for a child to remember yet humbling for the old to say before a meal or at the close of each day.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.  ~Matthew  6:9-13

For a long time I wanted to sketch this old photo and so, that’s what I finally did! In the short series of images below, I’m sharing my original Procreate sketch along with two adjusted images of the same illustration.

This is a good time to mention that I finally got to make Rain’s Baked Sour Cream Donuts. It took me almost a year but hey I did it!

Rain’s recipe is superb tasting and not all complicated. I believe anyone can make this without fears of failing. I put more batter than Rain instructed on purpose because I only have one donut pan and I didn’t want to wait. I just increased the bake time and got nice fat donuts. This will be a repeat before long and hopefully I’ll have a second donut pan so that I can double the recipe. 😉

I also made Valentine’s Day Thumbprint Cookies for DH. This was my first attempt ever and I was pleased as punch with how yummy these cookies turned out. I’m definitely going to make this recipe again.

Drinks? My preferred drink to go with sweets is black coffee.

There you have it, my spin on Rain’s art prompts. Who wants donuts and cookies?

Things I am thankful for today…I’m thankful for the huge dent made in removing all unwanted emails and unsubscribing to only company’s I ignorantly signed up for marketing emails. That’ll never happen again. I’m thankful for the continual good progress to remove all rarely used online accounts. I’m thankful for the spring-like weather we’ve had all week. It won’t be long before the seasons change again with more steady pleasant temperatures. 😊

Come join me next time for Monday’s Music Moves Me.  If you have music to share then hit the dance floor with me! This is CAAC signing off,  have a doodletastic day! XO, Cathy

  1. Finally checked my Gmail account and am going through blogs that I missed commenting on lately. Yours always have such great interesting content, art and music. Love it! And thanks for posting the Lord’s prayer, the way I know how to say it :-). And, Yes, I’m inspired to go off now and do some painting too, check on Rain’s blog for prompts, and figure out how to use Procreate! I know my hubby would be drooling over those donuts too. Maybe I’ll try baking him some to make his day :-). Well I have more than enough to keep me busy as a bee today! 🙂 XO

    1. Email has a way of piling up,doesn’t it? lol I think you’ll like Rain’s site. She’s a very talented artist not only on the canvas but in the kitchen. My hat is off to anyone who uses a real medium (canvas, brush, and paints). The closest I come is pencil and paper. I’ve done a little with colored pencils but haven’t gotten the knack of it. What I like about Procreate and Brushstrokes is everything is neatly contained. I can work on my illustrations anywhere with little fuss. Thanks for visiting, my dear!

  2. I love Andrea Bocelli … thank you for this video. Now really … you have been married a zillion years? How did you manage to pull that off? And how come it isn’t on your “I’m thankful for” list? I love the painting and the prayer which I have said many times (maybe a zillion) in my lifetime. It was a wonderful gift. And, I note that you added a glass of wine in your Procreate sketch … that serves to fulfil Rain’s “drink” prompt, I assume 🙂 Your donuts and cookies look awesome and I am guessing your DH”s favorite drink with sweets is coffee served as it is in your picture:) You make me smile and that is not easy to do these days. It is easy to get bogged down with our awful politics and culture wars … it is such a pleasure to visit you. So glad you are back in the fold …

  3. Your painting is beautiful. You drew it well. It covered both weeks brilliantly, too.

Your doughnuts look fabulous. I am like Nicole and could eat an entire dozen at a time. I have NO willpower when it comes to doughnuts, but NEVER the powdered sugar ones sold in the stores. I like the ones that are deep fried and covered in glazes. I especially LOVED the woman with her coffee. Just amazing.

    1. Elizabeth,

LOL! DH would get along very well with you and Nicole. He’s a major donut lover. The deep fried ones are delicious. We like getting Hot Ones as Krispy Kreme but we haven’t gotten any since before the government shut downs. We need to correct this soon. Thanks for visiting!

  4. Hi Cathy-Yes, I am little hippy mom//bioartgal blog title. I didn’t realize how messy that would make everything way back when I started my blog in 2007. I was in Florida for a vacation, but I’m up north today with the snow. Just came in from shoveling. I don’t like to shovel, but at least today the snow was light. Thanks for stopping by and clarifying all my messy blog names.

    1. Erika,

I’m glad that found you. You may want to add your active blog to your Gravatar profile so it’ll be easier for folks such as myself to find you. I will edit your info so others can click on it to jump over for visit. 🙂

  5. OMGosh Cathy! What a fabulous post. I love seeing your art. Those donuts are to live for. I have a real problem with donuts. Like I can eat a dozen of them without stopping. So I don’t make them or buy them. It’s a dis-ease. hee hee hee. The cookies look amazing. Thanks for linking the recipe. We got 2″ of snow. So glad we went shopping yesterday. LOL

    1. Nicole,

Have you made Rain’s recipe? It’s fantastic! You sound like DH. He loves, loves, LOVES donuts! He’s learning to curtail his cravings. I was surprised he didn’t woof the six donuts in one sitting. These keep very well in the freezer. Next time, I plan to double the recipe and make them smaller as Rain instructed. This cookie recipe is seriously delicious! I used Polaner all fruit seedless raspberry preserves (no sugar or artificial sweeteners) – fabulous stuff which in my opinion is what made the cookies extremely delicious. Two inches of snow isn’t bad but it can make rural and neighborhood roads tricky. I’m glad y’all went to the store yesterday, so you can just chillax at home in your little winter wonderland. 🙂

  6. All your food looks so yummy Cathy. Especially those donuts. Yum…yum….yum. I stopped by your blog the other day and was checking out your Maine trip too. Well Maine and New Hampshire trip. It looks like ti was great. I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far. hugs-Erika

  7. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Thankful Thursday Art Date With Rain, dear friend!

I really like that print of the elderly gentleman reverently saying grace at the dinner table. It was produced the year my mother was born. What a lovely and thoughtful gift! It is the type of art Mrs. Shady specializes in, the kind that depicts people from the 19th or early 20th century. However, she strongly favors female subjects, particularly Victorian women and girls. I love your rendering of the old man scene. Here again, the version of Procreate with Brushstrokes is the one that impresses me most.

I’ll bet DH gave you a hug and a smooch after you whipped up a big batch of Rain’s Baked Sour Cream Donuts. You got them perfect on the very first try. My mouth is watering just gazing at them. After seeing the Valentine’s Day Thumbprint Cookies you made, I’m clawing at the screen trying to get my hands on your baked goods. I’m with you on black coffee as the ideal beverage to go with a donut or cookie. Where did you find that pinup girl? I don’t think I ever saw her before.

While you have been enjoying spring like weather in Eastern Tennessee, we have been enduring summer like weather here in Florida. We didn’t have much of a winter this year, and it looks like the warm to hot conditions are here to stay, at least for the next 8 or 9 months.

It was a moving experience to hear The Lord’s Prayer sung operatically by Andrea B backed by the M.T. Choir and a world class orchestra. Thank you very much for the morning music and inspiration, dear friend Cathy. Enjoy the rest of your week and have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Tom,

I must have been half asleep this morning. I swear, I didn’t see your comment until now. Oh brother! My rendition of the old man saying grace was fun to sketch. I see my imperfections which drives me nuts but I’m doing my best to look past that to just enjoy what I love doing. The more I practice the more comfortable I begun as an artist. Mrs. Shady is a marvelous painter. She needs a blog to share her work. 🙂

The donuts and cookies recipes are easy. You might have to get Mrs. Shady to make you either or both.

I was telling DH that we’re getting spring-like weather in February and next month when it’s suppose to be warm, it’ll be bone cold. That seems the way things go when it’s warmer than usual too soon.

Andrea’s version of The Lord’s Prayer with the choir is so beautiful and deeply touching. I’m happy you enjoyed it.

Thanks for dropping by, my friend. Tomorrow is DH’s off Friday so I won’t be around! Have a good weekend!
