Billboard Hits from the year I turned 30

An Awww Mondays (hosted by moment captured for all times

In 1991, we celebrated DD#2’s 1st birthday.  Here she is licking chocolate birthday cake batter from the beater.  I love this picture with her wide grin showing her two bottom teeth.   This month’s honorary co-hostess is honoring her birthday girl’s 30th birthday by asking us to build a playlist from the year I (you) celebrated this same milestone. For me, it was 1991.

I’ve always felt there’s a hole in my memory starting after the birth of our first daughter in 1988.  It got worse moving into the 90s.  Was it adding a second and then a third child or was it just the busyness of it all being a mommy?  I’m sure it was the latter and where music goes, it flew right over my head.  I used Wiki’s Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles list to jiggle my memory to build my 10-song playlist. I’m 90% sure I heard these songs on the radio.  Hit play to enjoy the trip back in time to the days of the Marcarena, Lisa Frank stickers, Lip Smackers lip gloss, and Sony Walkman!

1991 Hits tracks 1. Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) ~CC Music Factory 2. It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over ~Lenny Gravitz 3. Coming Out of the Dark ~Gloria Estefan 4. Wind of Change ~Scorpions 5. Show Me The Way ~Styx 6. Wicked Game ~Chris Isaak 7. Cry for Help ~Rick Astley 8. Everybody Plays The Fool ~Aaron Neville 9. Shiny Happy People ~R.E.M. 10. I’m Not in Love ~Will to Power
The theme this week is in honor of Robin’s daughter’s 30th birthday. Build a playlist from the year you turned 30.

This is a music linky party.  Your co-hostess are StacyAlana, and Me.   Every other week we have a suggested music theme (see weekly prompts here) to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our music enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

4M design by Cathy Kennedy

Thanks for swinging by the party.  I hope you had fun.  This is CAAC signing off,  have a boogietastic week! X💋X💋, CathySaveSaveSaveSave

  1. A great year for music. Love all of your song choices. Thanks for for sharing them and thanks for hosting this great party.

    1. Nicole,

You’re the age of my younger auntie and uncle. Mom is the oldest of 7. She married really young at the age of 15. That wasn’t uncommon for a young girl living in rural West Virginia for that time. 16 months later I was born. Mom’s siblings mostly the younger ones were like big brothers and sisters for me. I remember grandma telling me how she complained that her mom had babies too close together, every two year and how she’ never do that. She proved herself right…she had hers every year which she laughed about. lol Talk about losing your mind! Big families are nice for gatherings when you’re older but the insanity of those early years had to difficult at best for most. 🙂 I for one am glad we stopped with three. lol

  2. Good songs! While I was only 12 that year, I know all those songs. I loved that Gloria Estefan one; I also lived near Miami at the time so it was always playing.

    1. Gloria Estefan really rocked the late 80s and 90s. I’d like to visit Miami in the dead of winter some time. I’m sure it would be way too hot for me any other time. If we ever get that far then maybe we can venture to the Keys. 🙂

  3. Great selection of songs! I love Everybody Dance Now – it’s one of those songs where one can’t sit still.

  4. You’re 10 years younger than me. I thought so. Love your playlist.

Have a fabulous day and week filled with beautiful music, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    1. Sandee,

You’re the same age as my youngest auntie. She was like a big sister. I spent a lot of time with as a kid. One of my most fun memories is the day she took me to school with her. I was really small, must have been younger than 5. The only reason I can think of for me tagging along is my mom was at the hospital having my baby brother. I’m gonna have to ask her about this memory. Thanks for dropping by to boogie with me!

    1. You were born the same year as my brother. I enjoyed these songs and love Chris Isaac. The first song was actually dung by Nell Carter but they wanted someone sleek and sexy looking which Nell was not. Nell had a great voice and she should gave been in the video. She died way too young. These were fun to listen to

      1. Birgit,

Nell Carter from the TV series “Give Me A Break” originally recorded Wicked Game? I looked on YT but only found Grace Carter covering this song. But yeah, you’re right Nell died too soon at the age 54. I learned while at YT that she had a drug problem once but bet that demon. Man, it’s sad when someone gets wrapped up with drugs! Nell Carter had a good voice. I do remember that about her and always enjoyed when she showed up on one of the variety TV programs in the late 70s and early 80s.

  5. Adorable photo of your daughter. Music from when you were 30 was way better than when I was in 1999. XO

    1. Ellen,

Everything seemed to fall apart toward the end of the decade. I love finding lost nuggets that I missed that came out after in the 90s to present. 1999 was a gloomy year in many ways, aside from the Y2K threat DH was out of work and finances were horrible tight. We survived it wit God’s help. 🙂

  6. I was also doing the mommy thing in 1991 (and I only had the one). It’s a nice playlist with two of my favs “Winds of Change” and “Shiny Happy People”. Two very nice surprises here. First, Wicked Game. Second, Rick Astley’s song. Both new to me. People got so stuck on “Never Gonna Give You Up” and the whole rickrolling meme that they never listened to any other of his songs. Will to Power’s cover of “Not in Love” was also enjoyable. And your philosophy for today: First Love Yourself. Yes. Alana ramblinwitham

    1. Alana,

One kiddo will keep you plenty busy enough. For some reason I always though Rick Astley’s voice didn’t match his appearance. He sure had the hair. I wonder if he still does. 😀 I liked “Never Gonna Give You Up”. I’m going to YT in a few to sample more of Astley’s music library. Yeah, Will to Power’s “Not in Love” cover is nice.

    1. Robin,

For some reason, I thought we were born the same year. I barely remember a lot of things from those early mommy years. lol

  7. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Awww-some 4M Monday on Sunday, dear friend! I hope you and DH had a good week and are having a nice weekend.

Awww… I just wanna smooch your DD#2 in that picture! I did exactly the same thing as a young child. My mother baked lots of cakes, and when she did, she always gave me the beaters so that I could lick the chocolate off of them.

I enjoyed your mewsic block of Billboard Hits flashing back to 1991 when you were age 30. I remember hearing “Everybody Dance Now” being sampled throughout the 90s in hits by other artists. It was also used in commercial jingles. I was working at that MTV station in 1991 and remember that we played that CCMF video often. We also played The Scorpions’ power ballad you posted, “Wind Of Change.” Styx was also popular on our station, and we played “Show Me The Way” in fairly heavy rotation. This morning, I am hearing for the first time, Aaron Neville’s cover of “Everybody Plays The Fool,” a 1972 hit by The Main Ingredient, a New York R&B/Soul group led by Cuba Goodling, Sr, father of actor Cuba Gooding Jr. who broke through in Jerry Maguire and won a primetime Emmy for his portrayal of “The Juice” in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The Miami-based dance-pop group Will to Power is also new to me. I enjoyed their cover of “I’m Not In Love,” the 1975 hit by the British band 10cc.

Thank you for the great set of songs and the inspiring meme at the end. Have a wonderful week, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

DD#2 is a cutie pie in this picture. In a couple of weeks I will make DH a chocolate cake for his birthday. When the kids were at home, we had birthday cake three months in a row from May – July which really made me happy that mine was in December.

I figured you’d remember the songs in my set with career history. I’m glad you came by to sample my selection for this week’s theme. I do remember Cuba Gooding Jr’s dad was a musician. If I remember right it was you who first brought that nugget to my attention. 🙂
