All Things Christmas Bringing in the New Year #scribblepicnic

Hop over to see Sandee for more Awww Mondays fun-spiration!

It’s not only the end of another month but the eve of a brand new year, Kittens and Dawgs.  How did that happen?  I seriously doubt there are many 4M partygoers around in Blogosphere but if you are one of the few then I have another playlist in my ‘All Things Christmas‘ mewsic lineup.   I’m actually excited to share my selections with you because I don’t believe I’ve used this mix of old and new (to me) songs on my site.  Give a listen to these 9 titles featuring New Year(s).

  1. Christmas Ain’t Christmas, New Years Ain’t New Years Without The One You Love ~ O’Jays
  2. Maybe Baby (New Year’s Day) ~ Sugarland
  3. Celtic New Year ~ Van Morrison
  4. New Year’s Prayer ~ Jeff Buckley
  5. New Year’s Day ~ U2
  6. This is the New Year ~ A Great Big World
  7. What Will the New Year Bring? ~Donna Fargo
  8. Funky New Year ~ The Eagles
  9. Bringing In a Brand New Year ~ Charles Brown

  6. Hi, Cathy!

I like how you got the jump on New Year’s Eve same as I did on SPMM.

All of the Christmas and New Year themed recordings on your playlist are new to my ears. When The O’Jays released that seasonal single they were in the midst of the most successful phase of their career as one of the major recording acts responsible for developing The Sound of Philadelphia in the 70s. I really enjoyed the second song, “Maybe Baby,” by the country duo Sugarland, because I appreciate the arrangement and the blending of male and female vocals. Jeff Buckley’s “New Year’s Prayer” is certainly not a sound one would expect to hear during the holidays. The song, from the posthumous 1998 album Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, is as haunting as the true story of how the talented singer and songwriter drowned in a river at the age of 30. I find myself loving country mewsic more ever year, perhaps because country keeps it simple. I can understand the words and relate to the songs. That’s why I was happy to listen to this one by Donna Fargo, a mewsical question everyone asks at this time of year, “What Will The New Year Bring?”

FYI – The Eagles song is blocked and unavailable for playback. I found “Funky New Year” on YouTube and loved the sound. It reminded me of a funky version of Bowie’s “Fame” performed by Ohio Players or one of those other Ohio funk bands of the 70s.

Your set ended with Texas blues singer Charles Brown who seemed to specialize in holiday songs. In addition to the one you posted, “Bringing In A Brand New Year” (The B side of “Christmas Comes (But Once A Year)” released during the holidays in 1964, Brown released the following single sides: “Christmas Blues,” “My Most Miserable Christmas,” “Merry Christmas Baby,” “Christmas Finds Me Oh So Sad,” “Wrap Yourself In A Christmas Package,” “Christmas Questions,” “Christmas Finds Me Lonely Wanting You,” “It’s Christmas Time,” “It’s Christmas All Year Round,” “Christmas In Heaven, “Please Come Home For Christmas,” “Let’s Make Every Day A Christmas Day” and others.

I admire your Scribble picnic sketch of fireworks above the city skyline. We used to live on the 4th floor and have a wonderful view of 7 or 8 different fireworks displays at a time. Now we live on ground level and trees block the view for the most part.

Happy new year to you and your family, dear friend Cathy. Let’s work together and play together and make 2019 the greatest year of all!

    1. Tom,

You got an earlier jump than me. 🙂 Thanks for telling me about The Eagles song not working on the playlist. I’ll fix that in a few. I’m glad you enjoyed the New Year song set and I liked the mewsic history lesson. Whenever I think of fireworks, I always think of them being shot off over a city skyline. I don’t think Knoxville hosts a fireworks display for the New Year. We scan the various broadcast parties going on around the country throughout the evening, never watching of them entirely but we do make sure to tune to see the ball drop in Time Square. 🙂 The old year will come to a close soon, my dear friend and I hope you and Mrs. Shady have the best new year yet! Thank you for being such a compassionate and loyal friend. May the Lord bless you always!
