2019 The Little Mermaid #artsketch series ‘Ray-Ray’ #AtoZChallenge

Thanks for joining in today.  If you missed previous posts in The Little Mermaid Artsketch series you can find them easily under Latest Mews in my side menu.  ☞ ☞ ☞

The letter ‘R’ tested my wits a bit. I thought about ocean life and I was certain there were either stingray or manta ray in the first film, so that’s when I found my inspiration from the sequel, Ariel’s Beginning for today’s illustration, Ray-Ray.

Ray-Ray is the bass player for The Catfish Club Band with other members including – Sabastian, Cheeks a green blowfish on sax, Inkspot a violet octopus on the keys, Shelbow a teal sea turtle playing percussion, and Arista King Triton’s 5th daughter and only female band member. Ray-Ray is a sky-blue manta ray with a deep barton voice who’s the band resident womanizer.

When I mentioned Ray-Ray’s band name to DH, he said, “There aren’t catfish in the sea.” I said, “I don’t think so, but it’s a cool name.”  As it turns out hardhead catfish live in the ocean but this species may not be desirable to the palette like freshwater catfish. 😉

I’m heading off to link up with other fellow AtoZers and you’re invited to come along.  For my fellow A2Zers, please leave a breadcrumb (direct post URL) in comments so I might find my way easily to you.  Tomorrow is the A2Z off day but that doesn’t stop me. Okay, technically the weekends stop me and you won’t find me in Blogosphere but thanks to blog scheduling you can hit the Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me on Sunday with ‘your song choice picks‘ week! That’s an invitation to come boogie with me. 😉

  1. I liked your sketch:) and loved watching the video, thanks for sharing.

    1. Trudy,

I think Ray-Ray’s likeness was in the original where Sebastian is singing ‘Under the Sea’ and maybe in other mewsical numbers if my memory serves me correctly. I like the name The Catfish Club band. 🙂

    1. Birgit,

I’m glad you sense Ray-Ray fun nature. He was a delight to sketch. I tried working in some of the other band members in the background. Perhaps if I use my iPad to sketch him again then I can allow more room to add them to the scene.

  2. I can understand how difficult it is to find some characters or post titles for a specific letter. Even I keep on thinking what to write sometimes.
But yes… painstakingly finding a character deserves applause!
Ray Ray that you have drawn is fantastic.
The video that you have posted at the end is very nice – I like it – Shake Shake, Shake Senora!! The scene and dance is so beautiful. It brings back childhood memories filled with fun.

    1. Kislaya,

Why thank you! I enjoyed hearing for the first time the song twist ‘Shake Shake, Shake Senora’ which definitely put a smile on my face – so much fun! The mewsic video puts in the dance mood, doesn’t it?

  3. BO…. DACIOUS…….. as my son says… hahahaha LOVE IT! I love that scene too… but yet it’s sad for Ariel . You sure you just didn’t trace this one? ~hehehe~ Just kiddin’, but this one is spot on girlfriend…… spot on!!!! HAPPY EASTER GIRLFRIEND… have a great weekend!

    1. Mimi,

You know, I thought the same but they never address that but I’m sure this scene had to be the inspiration for The Catfish Band.

  4. What a toe tapping video. I’m loving your sketches and I’m loving revisiting a classic.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, Cathy. Happy Easter. Love and hugs. ♥

  5. Hi, Cathy!

Happy Easter Saturday and “R” day, dear friend!

You did a great job finding characters for every letter of the alphabet. I am very impressed with your drawing of Ray-Ray, the manta ray from the 2008 animated video fantasy The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning. As you might already know, our St. Petersburg based pro baseball franchise was originally named the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after the manta ray sea creature. A dozen years ago the team name was changed to the Tampa Bay Rays referring to the Florida sunshine. I love your sketch of Ray-Ray, the bass player for The Catfish Club Band. I watched the clip. They are a colorful bunch. Ray-Ray’s build, the way he moves as he performs and the fact that he is a womanizer, make me think the character was inspired by Kiss bass player Gene Simmons. Performing underwater, I suppose there is no way for Ray-Ray to imitate Jimi Hendrix by setting his guitar on fire. 🙂

Have a wonderful weekend and a blessed Easter, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

Thanks for popping in on Saturday, dear friend. I’m not much of baseball fan but I have heard of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Sometimes the Wikipedia page tells the character’s inspiration but there isn’t anything on Ray-Ray. I don’t know anything about Gene Simmons purrsonally other than he’s the Kiss band member with the crazy long tongue. That’s so creepy to me.

Yeah, I reckon Ray-Ray would have an impossible time setting his guitar on fire like the late Jimi Hendrix under the sea. 🙂
