2019 #BoTB Round 2 #PeggyLee VS #DinahShore ‘Love and Marriage’ Sing-off!

Visit Comedy Plus (Sandee) for Tuesday Fun

Hello, Kittens & Dawgs!  This month holds a few special occasions in my family.  For starters, January is the birth month of my brother-in-law’s wife, Susan.  It’s also, the month they got married (1972 or ’73).  The year Frank Sinatra released Love and Marriage (1955) Susan was born if I got my dates right.  I’m not very good with numbers.  Susan, however, is VERY good with them.  She holds a BA in computer programming which requires excellent mathematical skills and she has that!  With her birthday and their anniversary falling in the same month then I felt ‘Love and Marriage’ would be a great battle song, don’t you?

I’m using two well-known female singers who need no introduction and I dare say most of y’all know these women.  My first contender is Peggy Lee followed by my second contender, Dinah Shore. Listen and decide which blonde gets your vote! 😉

  1. Hey, this was the theme for Married with Children, right? (Sorry, I was youngster when that show came out and I watched it here and there whenever the parents were flipping through the channel). I like Peggy Lee’s version better as nothing can go wrong with her!

  2. I’m running late to the party this week. (Hanging my head in shame). I haven’t even got to the responses to my own battle, that’s how crazy my week has been!

Any way. I’m voting for Peggy Lee.. Her version was just a little more appealing to me.

    1. Mary,

No need to hang your pretty head in shame for the late visit. I’m guilty of that many times. I’m just glad you a chance to stop by to vote for Peggy Lee.

  3. Hi, Cathy! This is a great battle – if fact, the last few you’ve done have been extra good. You’re starting the year off right, girl.

Off topic, the the star of “Married with Children” was from my OTHER hometown, Youngstown, Ohio: Ed O’Neill. Consequently, I know waaaaaay too much about Ed O’Neill, but he always struck me as a nice guy. Taught school for a bit at Ursuline High School before he hit it big. I love Ed in the movie “Dutch.” It’s legendary in our house.

Now, where was I? Oh, yeah! I vote for Dinah Shore because I’m afraid of Peggy Lee (she always struck me as one of THOSE kinda gals, ha ha). Actually, Dinah Shore’s voice is much more pleasing to me. She’s sort of a “girl next door” personality for me. I don’t know why, she dated Burt Reynolds and was a solid Hollywood A-lister for a while there when she had a show. Media! Why do you twist my perception? Why do I let you? Ha ha ha.

    Thanks, Cathy!

    1. Hey, Cherdo!

My battles are more evenly matched the last two or three rounds which super surprised me. It’s either sheerly accidental OR I’m learning how to do it.:) That’s cool Ed is from your ‘other’ hometown. I didn’t know that he was a school teacher before stardom. I can see this, though. He looks like a teacher. I do remember the movie ‘Dutch’ but haven’t watched it. I will check it out.

Cool factoid about Dinah and Burt dating. I didn’t know and you’re right Dinah seems like that ‘girl next door’. Thanks for sharing the fun tidbits and for casting your vote for Dinah Shore who is ahead by three now!

  4. I have to say Doris Day – I listened to Peggy Lee and then when I started listening to Doris – her voice just made me …kind of free and happy feeling. So there’s that!

    1. Sandy,

You had confused momentarily with your vote for Doris Day but I reckon you must have thought Dinah Shore sounded like Doris and I get that. There’s a bit of similarity in their tone. I appreciate you taking time to pitch a vote in this showdown. 😉

  5. Hi Cathy; Your B-I-L’s wife and I share the same birth month and year. ☺ I remember this song as the opening theme for “Married With Children”. Wasn’t it in a movie, as well? Please give my vote to Dinah Shore. Her vocals were more pleasing and so was the arrangement. Thanks!

    1. Debbie,

I don’t know if “Married With Children” was a movie. Your bday is this month? Did I tell you happy birthday? I don’t remember. smack forehead I not on FB enough to catch all the bday notices. I hope you had/have a good one! I have your vote recorded for Dinah.

      1. No worries; my birthday is later in the month (27th). It was just interesting that Susan and I are the same age. 🙂 Married with Children was a TV show, but I vaguely remember the song from a movie, as well.Found it!

  6. Gee, make it easy, why don’t you? I’m a fan of both Miss Peggy and Miss Dinah, so this was hard.

I liked the “cha-cha-cha” of Miss Peggy’s version, so I’m going with her.

  7. Love the funnies. I linked this post to Happy Tuesday.

This is a tough one to pick. They are both awesome, but I’m going with Dinah Shore.

Have a fabulous day and week, Cathy. Love you. ♥

    1. Sandee,

Thank you for linking me up but I joined earlier this morning. Didn’t you see me? 🙂 Anywho, thanks for swinging by to vote for Dinah Shore. 😘

    1. Mimi,

I know, I know it’s hard to pick between two fine female vocalists but I’m sure Peggy Legg forgives you for going with Dinah. 🙂

  8. Hi, Cathy!

Happy BOTB day to you, dear friend, and once again, happy birthday and anniversary to Susan! The first thing that pops into my mind whenever I hear the song “Love And Marriage” is the Sinatra version used as the theme of Married… with Children, the edgy sitcom I watched through its entire run from the late 80s to late 90s. When it comes to female singers, there are two separate types that I prefer. I like a sweet, clean, clear singing voice, but I also like a female with a raspy or gravelly rock-style voice. Somewhere in between is a smoky voice, and I usually do not like it as much. The Peggy Lee recording offers the qualities I prefer. Peggy’s vocal is clean and clear and I appreciated the cha-cha-cha rhythm on the arrangement. The recording is light in tone and the approach fits the song. It might have been the quality of the recording itself, but Dinah Shore’s vocal had a smoky quality that I did not find as pleasing, and the arrangement was straight down the middle and not as interesting. I strongly prefer the Peggy Lee rendition of “Love And Marriage.”

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

    1. Tom,

Although I haven’t made a decision yet in this showdown, I think our ears are generally closely matched where female vocals style go. Thanks for giving Peggy Lee her first score in this round! 🙂

  9. CATHY ~
I liked reading the facts that inspired you to present this particular song in BOTB. Sometimes the stories about WHY a person came to select a certain song for BOTB are as good as the Battles themselves.

Now… if I recall correctly… this song was used as the theme for that TV series about the married couple — I can’t remember the name of the show, but the idiot father always had his hand stuffed down the front of his pants. Wow! I hated that show! That may have been the TV series where I first realized that “The Powers That Be” were deliberately trying to dumb-down the masses.

Anyway, for the task at hand (i.e., determining how to vote in this particular Battle), I listened to both songs twice and, much to my surprise, I’m agreeing with Lee’s vote. I’ll go with DINAH SHORE as well. I noticed years ago that Lee’s BOTB votes and mine are usually contrary to each other. Like, probably at least 85% of the time. Not by design, of course, but just… well… that’s just the way it is. Most of the time, I could look at how Lee voted and, with a fairly decent degree of confidence, bet money I’ll find myself voting the other way. But not THIS TIME!

    Anyway, back on topic — this was a good Battle, my friend! And I side with LEE. [;-)}

    1. Stephen,

Judging by the description of the TV show using ‘Love and Marriage’ as the theme song, I couldn’t place it so I asked Google. Are you thinking of “Married With Children”? I don’t think I ever watched an entire episode but there were a few scenes that would catch my eye while DH channeled surfed.

Another vote goes to Dinah Shore. She’s starting off strong, eh? 🙂
