1970s Novelty Songs & BOTB Results

Welcome to Monday’s Music Moves Me on Sunday!

This week’s theme is whatever music moves you. With last Monday be April Fool’s Day and if you’re like me you probably remember the crazy fun you had as a kid pranking other kids.  I ain’t going to play any tricks on you but I thought it might be fun to tickle your funny bone with a few novelty songs from the 1970s.

Which novelty song comes to mind that makes you smile or laugh?

This is a music link up.  Your post must contain at least one song or your URL is marked “No Music”.

The 4M co-hostess are featured in my right side bar underneath the banner. The guidelines are simple.  Every other week, a suggested (not mandatory) theme is given to build your song picks. YouTube and other music sites have options to create and embed playlists or individual songs into your post. On the off weeks, we dance to whatever music moves you (your choice)! To access the party, add your music post below, and visit others on the dance floor. Let the party begin!

I thought I’d report the outcome from my April 1st BOTB today instead of waiting til tomorrow.  If anyone happened to cast a vote prior to publication, then I apologize for not getting yours tallied in the results.  In my battle I put up three artists but it the fight was mainly between two of them and understandably so because I found myself stuck between the same two picks as most of y’all.  After going back and forth between Odd Rene and Rick, I finally decided to give Rick my vote breaking the tie and giving him the victory in this showdown.

I want to thank everyone who participated. As a reminder, here’s how the votes fell.

Odd Rene – Tom, Birgit, Sandee, Ed, Stephen, Mary

Rachel – Diedre (thank you for putting her into the game!)

Rick – Lee, Debbie, Eugi, Mimi, Brian, John, Me     🎉THE WINNER!👏

I invite you to check out other BOTB members (list in side menu) results posts!

This week is going to be busy with DH’s dental appointments but hopefully I can post new artwork on Thursday, so kinda keep that in mind and watch for publication notification.  Have a boogietastic week!

  1. CAThy ~

A 7 to 6 BOTB win! That’s fantastic! (And the same result that I had!) I love it when a Battle is won by a single vote, and it happens to be the vote cast by the BOTBer him/herself. YOU decided the winner in this Battle (Rick Price), just as I decided the winner (Tiny Tim) in my own contest. Hooray for US!!

I’m actually a big fan of lots of novelty songs.
(One of the things this world needs more of is…
    F-U-N songs!)

Some novelty songs I love are ‘The Battle Of New Orleans’ by Johnny Horton; ‘Flowers On The Wall’ by The Statler Brothers; ‘You Can’t Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd’ by Roger Miller (and a whole bunch more also by Roger Miller); and several by Jim Stafford, including ‘My Girl Bill’, ‘I Ain’t Sharin’ Sharon’, ‘Your Bulldog Drinks Champagne’, ‘Wildwood Weed’, and… wait for it… wait for it… ’16 Little Red Noses & A Horse That Sweats’.

      1. Oh WOW, “Spiders and Snakes” is a new to you! It’s such a classic novelty song from the 70s here in the states. It’s a fun ditty. There’s a YT video of Jim Stafford singing it with Dolly Pardon dressed up like a little girl. It’s a lot of fun. 🙂

    1. Thanks for checking out how my battle went down. I’m glad I started voting again or else it would’ve been a tie between the two main contenders. That’s kind of interesting that our battles not only went the same way but we cast the winning ballots.

You came up with an excellent list of novelty songs. Some of them I don’t know or just don’t remember. I will have to visit YT to find them. Thanks for dropping by, ole pal!

  2. I remember all of those songs! 😀 With the exception of Disco Duck (awful earworm! 🫨) they were fun to listen to. Thanks for posting your BOTB results. I’m way behind, but will get on that right now.

    1. I admit that I always liked Disco Duck but I’m not sure what made it such a hit. It’s a silly song but it has a good beat and it’s a lot fun. Maybe that’s why it appealed to me. It just made me feel good. I’m sorry for planting that earworm. 😬

  3. I always thought “My Girl Bill” was a riot. Good picks, by the way…

And yes, the kitten at the end is adorable…

    1. I didn’t know for the longest time that “My Girl Bill” was a fella talking to a guy named Bill about his girl. I thought the girl’s name was Bill. lol

      1. Love your song choices and Disco Duck wad a huge hit but have no idea why? Lol. The kitten is a tiger!

        1. Me, either but I always thought it was such fun to listen and dance to as a teenager. I’m still partial to it because of the way it made me feel. 🙂

  4. When I started to play these, my husband immediately said “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival!” and I said, yes, I can play that one for you. He loves that song and I do, too. These are all songs I liked back in the day and they were nice to hear again. My favorites: many by Weird Al. Naming a couple – Smells Like Nirvana and The Saga Begins. Alana ramblinwitham

    1. Everyone love Ray Stevens! “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival” is such a hoot. Stevens has some fabulous, timeless novelty songs that our generations won’t forget. You mentioned Weird Al and he’s is a lot of fun, too.

  5. Disco Duck was all the rage when I was a kid. The Streak as well and, of course I remember the streaker at the Oscars and a streaker at a baseball game. Interesting theme. I enjoyed listening to these. The BOTB was so close. Great battle!

    1. The Streak is a hilarious song. I’ll never forget in the early 80s right after I started college while on city transit I saw a young man walking on the street almost completely naked. He wore only his socks and shoes. I guess, he wanted to be served if he went to a restaurant. lol Actually, the poor fella appeared to be stoned and had no idea where he was or where he was going.

    1. Mine, too! Where I grew up in the 60s and 70s, I remember tent revivals that came to our area. I don’t think I ever attended any of the services. When this song came out it just clicked because of this fact. This is such a fun song! I’d love to meet Ray Stevens. I told DH that I want to go to see him perform at his theatre in Nashville. I hope we get a chance to do it.
