Battle of the Bands

The Man With the Golden Gun BOTB Showdown

Welcome to BOTB 2021 round 12!   The Man With the Golden Gun hit the box office in 1974.  I turned 13 at the end of the year and I didn’t even know who 007 was at the time.  Lulu was given the gig to perform the opening theme for this James Bond movie after Albert Broccoli dismissed the idea of handing the song off to Elton John or Cat Stevens.  Broccoli had good foresight using a female vocals with the lyrical sexual innuendos.

The first contender is The Name is Band…Bond Tribute Band. You gotta give them extra points for coming up with a such clever band name using James Bond signature style of introduction. I don’t know the female singer’s name unless it’s the same as the YouTuber who uploaded the music video Sarah Pavey. They have a Facebook page which shows a ‘Sarah’ as the band’s contact. Anyway none of that matters really, listen to the UK tribute band to see if they earn your vote.

My second contender is Jennifer Rush.  You probably remember her from a few months back when I used her cover of another James Bond theme song.  Take a moment to listen to the American singer/songwriter once more and let me know if she’s winner in this round.

Remember there’s no wrong vote, except a no vote. You know what to do, leave the name of your favorite pick in comments. It’s that easy! 😉

Who gets your vote The Name is Band…Bond Tribute Band or Jennifer Rush?

I invite you to visit BoTBers with showdowns going on today.

Polls close August 7th at noon (EST)!

A bit of trivia….did you know Alice Cooper wrote a song title Man With the Golden Gun to be used but Cooper reported that it came in a day too late and Lulu’s song was picked.  Cooper determined to do a James Bond song released it on his 1973 Muscle of Love album.

Next week, I’ll announce the winner in this round in my Monday’s Music Moves Me (Aug. 9th), so mark your calendar to see if your favorite artist wins in this showdown. Come by tomorrow to hit the dance floor with the 4M gang with your choice song picks. Have a lovely Sunday!  X💋X💋, Cathy

    HiYa, CAThy! It’s That You?!

Oddly, I tried REPEATEDLY last night to come here and cast my bote, but I kept getting a “Page Not Found” message. I feared that perhaps your BOTB post had been disappeared by the FBI, or by the CIA, or CNN, or by one of our other goodhearted government alphabet agencies. (Yes, CNN is a government agency. Probably the worst of the bunch.)

Anyway, kudos to The Name is Band for the clever name.

A great opportunity was missed: there SHOULD have been a concert in which ‘The Name Is Band’ was the opening act for ‘The Band’.

Well, clever name notwithstanding, JENNIFER RUSH has pipes that cannot be denied, and I think she wins this contest for me based solely on that vocal power. Her voice is not just a “gun”, but a double-barreled shotgun!

    Good Battle, my friend!

I’ve never seen a James Bond movie, but WHICH ACTOR was YOUR favorite Bond?

I has another Battle up and running this week, so pop over and cast yer two pennies into the kitty whenever you has a chance.

      Hey Stephen,

It’s me! I’m sorry you had trouble getting to my BoTB post. Did I leave it incorrectly on another fellow BoTBers site or were you trying to go to my home page? Hmm…oh well perhaps my host site was doing some maintenance stuff OR CNN attempted to shut me down and I couldn’t agree with you more they ARE the worst of those acronyms. I’m glad you finally were able to gain access to my site to to cast your bote for JENNIFER RUSH. Thanks, friend! My favorite James Bond actor was Sean Connery but I like Roger Moore a lot, too. Moore was more playful on screen, able to deliver comic lines easier or maybe Connery didn’t have that luxury because of the writers. I don’t know. Both actors were awesome as 007. I like most of the others except I don’t think Daniel Craig is a good fit. He seems to angry and I hate how they’ve taken away his fun Playboy ways. 🙂 Oh excellent, I’m glad to know you have a battle going. I stopped by on Monday and I didn’t see one, so I thought perhaps you weren’t playing this time. Okay, I’m heading over to your place now.

        CAThy ~
I tried to get to your BOTB page multiple different ways (3 or 4), but none of those ways was via a link that you had left on another blogger’s blog.

Yeah, it was probably CNN messin’ with ya.
        (CNN: Cathy? Not NOW!)

          Stephen,

You’re probably right about CNN or it could’ve been my hosting site doing something and my site was down. That’s so bothersome. They need to do that when folks are in bed. 🙂

A dazzling battle! Perhaps without the video, I was able to visualize what I heard in Jennifer Rush’s voice which was fabulous and sounded as if she meant what she was so boldly singing about 😉 A vote for Jennifer, please!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Diedre,

I try to avoid watching the music videos so I can strictly concentrate on the vocals, arrangement, and lyrics. I put your name beside JENNIFER RUSH. Thanks for playing along, my dear!

  • Aaron Scott Wynes

Well first off seriously Austin Powers’ imagery has replaced James Bond so the songs sound about Powers. Then Rush’s superior voice is undermined by the rinky dinky Chuck E Cheese instrumentation. Still, my vote for Rush wither her great voice.

  • Birgit

OK, Muscle of Love made me burst out in giggles…I am a naughty girl. I love the live band in the first option and the lady has a great voice but then I listened to Jennifer. Since this song is truly about the singer I am going with Jennifer who has a powerhouse of a voice even if the back up band sounds synthesized. She gets my vote.

      Mimi,

Thanks for taking time out of your not-so busy day, I say this because I know you’re in quarantine right now, to vote for THE BOND TRIBUTE BAND. I hope your hubby continues to have only mild COVID symptoms and life can go back to normal soon.

  • Sandee

Both are good, but Jennifer Rush has my vote.

Is Marie okay? Not heard from her in a bit. I sent her an email but no response.

Have a fabulous day and week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sandee,

      Gotcha down for JENNIFER RUSH!

I haven’t heard from Marie, either. I just figured she’s busy. I think the last thing I heard from her was on July 24th. She’s having trouble with her leg and can’t get around too well. I would imagine that means she doesn’t feel like sitting in front of the computer which isn’t good for her back. As soon as I hear anything from her then I’ll pass on an update. Let’s keep our gal in prayer. 😉

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Sunday, happy August and happy BOTB day, dear friend!

I totally agree with you about using female vocalists to sing the theme songs of Bond films. A seductive female voice sets the stage and the tone. In today’s battle, the playing field is somewhat uneven because act #1 benefits from performing live so that we can see as well as hear them, while act #2 merely displays a static pic of the album cover. If we were to be completely fair, we would close our eyes and merely listen to both performances. However my resolve to do so was overcome by the low cut dress Sarah was wearing. 🙂 The sound quality is excellent on both versions and both performances boast swaggering, brassy arrangements and great playing by the bands. Therefore the decision comes down to which frontwoman did a better job singing the movie theme song. While I enjoyed Sarah and her UK tribute group The Name Is Band, Shady sez U.S. thrush Jennifer Rush is the more accomplished singer, her vocal style bolder, more powerful and more operatic, like that of Shirley Bassey. Simply put, Jennifer’s performance seems more Bondworthy, more appropriate for use in the OST of a 007 feature, and she earns my vote.

No, I didn’t know that Alice Cooper recorded a Bond song. He must be a big fan of the spy series.

I’ll meet you here tamale on the dance floor, dear friend Cathy. Have a happy Sunday and a wonderful week!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Tom,

I think you’re probably right about JENNIFER RUSH being a more accomplished vocalist and you’re also right that the two comparisons aren’t equal. To judge the singers for the talents only, one should and I highly encourage everyone to close their eyes before selecting his/her favorite artist in this round. Thanks for stopping by so early yesterday to cast your vote.

  • Mary B

    Good Morning Cathy!
Getting an early start on my week 🙂 This was a good battle. I actually enjoyed both versions, but I think I enjoyed the Bond Tribute band just a smidge better. Ask me again tomorrow… well, that answer might change. It’s that close! So by a very narrow margin, please give my vote to The Bond Tribute band.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mary,

You’re the early bird with the first vote for THE BOND TRIBUTE BAND in this ‘Battle of the Bands’ edition. Thanks for stopping by to make your voice be heard read! 😉
