Random musings and music by Rita Coolidge

Warning! Warning! This is a long-winded post.  I hope my random musings don’t bore you to tears but on the bright side some of the content includes music and my hodgepodge responses. 😉

My scheduled posts are getting fewer by the day but in my spare time I’m able to get music posts done ahead at the very least.  I don’t want to get burned out which is something that can happen easily when one tries to put out daily content. I question whether I should continue hosting my mid-week linky party.  I realize when I’m more active in Blogosphere then others are likely to take part in my party.  I suppose for now I will continue to host until I think its usefulness becomes more of a headache than a joy.

At the start of every new year I begin thinking about April’s A to Z Challenge.  I know I’ll participate but getting motivated is another story.  I don’t want to be like last year rushing to get things done and very little time to enjoy what others share.  Now, that’s a good way to speed up the “getting burned out process”.  Trust me, it happens all on its own to a degree without complications.  By the time I compose 30 daily entries in this challenge, I’m exhausted.  Do I really want to put myself through this?  Maybe, I’ll have a more clear direction on this matter in the coming weeks.

On Monday’s Music Moves Me dance floor, one of my boogie partners shared his rekindled love for vinyl records. He featured a few oldies from the 70s by Rita Coolidge.  Naturally, I got curious to see what she’s been up to over the years.  To be honest, the last big hit Coolidge had that I easily remember is “All Time High” which I used in my January 1st. BOTB James Bond theme song series.  Speaking of BOTB, did you vote in my most recent showdown? There’s still time.

Rita is a Tennessee gal whose ancestry is a mix of Cherokee and Scottish.  She’s has had a colorful personal life with her relationships involving other musicians over the years and once married to Kris Kristofferson which I had forgotten about.  They share one daughter, Casey Kristofferson, who is a musician.  I found it interesting Coolidge is a painter and has exhibited her work in California but I was unable to find any samples online.  The last thing Wiki says about Rita’s personal life is that she reconnected with a college lover and moved to Tallahassee in 2017.  The saddest part of my discovery was reading about Rita’s sister Priscilla’s murder by the husband who then killed himself in 2014.  What a tragedy!

Her recording career begin with her debut 1971 self-title album running through to 2018.  She was pretty consistent from the 70s through the 90s but after the millennium she produced only three albums. Today,  I thought it would be nice to share with you her 2018 album, SAFE IN THE ARMS OF TIME.

Song tracks: 1. Satisfied 2. Doing Fine Without You 3. Walking On Water 4. Spirit World 5. The Things We Carry 6. Naked All Night 7. Van Gogh 8. Rainbow 9. Over You 10. We Are Blood 11. You Can Fall in Love 12. Please Grow Old With Me

Last week I missed Joyce’s Wednesday Hodgepodge questions but I managed to copy and answer them this week.

1. It’s National Popcorn Day-my favorite! Are you a fan? Sweet or salty? A good or great movie you’ve seen recently (at home or in a theater, either one)? I am a fan of popcorn.  Overall, I prefer plain salted popcorn.  One the best movies and most fun movies we’ve watched in a long time was Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard with Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, and Morgan Freeman.  We think we like this one better than the first film, The Hitman’s Bodyguard.

2. What’s something you didn’t realize was going to take so much of your time as an adult? Generally just about everything takes longer than you anticipate.  It doesn’t matter what chore we set out to do, I’m often mystified at how much time was spent getting the project done.

3. Your favorite yellow something? The first thing that came to mind is daffodils. I think it’s because yellow daffodils are so cheery this time of year except we won’t see those blooming until the end of February or first of March.  It depends on what this crazy weather will do in our area.

4. Why do you write? I write to share myself and to feel like I belong.  Being a stay at home mom for almost 33 years and one who socializes rarely outside my home, writing for friends in Blogosphere or across the miles gives me what I need.

5. Share a favorite memory associated with snow.  The blizzard of ’93 might be my favorite snow memory.  That storm seemed totally unexpected.  Maybe, the forecasters were telling folks about it and I do remember something about it but I think I was like, “Yeah, right snow?” We don’t get much in the way of the white fluff and when we do get it, the accumulation is generally minimal.  However when we got up the next morning after that history breaking day to find a wintry wonderland just outside our window, the snow level easily reached our car’s bumper. We were awed.  At one point, we got outdoors because we could see one tree behind the house had come down barely escaping our dining room window.  Had it been six feet taller then it would’ve broken it out.  The depth of the snow made it really hard to trudge through carrying a toddler and helping a 4-year old.  It gave me quite the work out.  The heavy wet snow closed pine trees up like umbrellas.  I think we lost four or five evergreens in that storm. What was amazing is we didn’t hear a single one of them fall in the night and one rested against the side of our garage. We didn’t stay outdoors too long on that first day mostly out of fear that the electricity would go out and then we wouldn’t be able to warm up properly.  Ironically, our power stayed on with the exception of being without if for an hour.  God’s hands were in the mix is all I can say.  We managed to stay snuggly warm in the comfort of our home all that weekend which is also another amazing thing because the storm hit on a Friday night.  DH did have to take a few days off at the beginning of the week but Mother Nature came out to help speed the thawing process. You can read more about that day in my Wayback Wednesdays post.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  On Sunday, Winter Storm Izzy came into our area.  I didn’t catch the flurries when they were coming down in super sized flakes but I did capture 30 seconds where it looked pretty falling outside my kitchen window. I really need a better place to do stuff like this but I work with what I have. 🙂

There’s no sound, but silence.
Izzy left 1-2 inches by Monday morning. During the night our power went out but was restored before we had to get up. Big ole applauds 👏 to Knoxville Utilities Board for their hard work!

The forecasters are calling for more cold and the possibility of snow by the weekend.  Hopefully, we won’t get much if any accumulation.  The frigid temperatures are enough to deal with.

You’re invited to add your favorite or current blog post to the Wild Wednesday linky party where just about anything goes.  This is your opportunity to share whatever you want.  All that I ask is that you’re a personal blogger.  Spam links will be deleted.

      Myke,

Thank you for the link. According to the references on this song, it doesn’t say Leon wrote the song “about” Rita Coolidge. It says Leon wrote the song “for” Rita. Maybe, I over looked the “about” part. This got me to thinking, perhaps this tidbit is at Wiki under Rita’s info and it was mentioned “In Popular Culture” section of her bio.

I noticed Rita Coolidge’s autobiography is called DELTA LADY. I didn’t understand this so I breezed through her bio to read that she became known as the “Delta Lady”. I’m unclear what “Delta Lady” means, though. Is it relating to a region or is sexual or something else? This may require more digging. I think it’s interesting that Joe Cocker recorded “Delta Lady” whom Rita once had a thing with.

SongFacts collaborated that these songs were written “about” Rita. It also mentions “A Song For You” was originally written for Frank Sinatra to record but didn’t. Russell released the first single in 1970. In ’71, it grew in popularity with legendary crooner Andy Williams and then Donny Hathaway R&B artist covers. Williams recording charted #82. I remember The Carpenters cover from 1972 best. What can one expect if one gets involved with a songwriter but a song to be written about you. 🙂 This could be a BOTB idea for a future date if someone doesn’t steal it before I get a chance. 🙂

Thanks for sparking my curiosity. Now, you have to tell me how you met Rita. There’s never such a thing as not having enough time in Blogosphere. You’re welcome to leave a lengthy message anytime! 🙂

Hi Cathy, I’m all too familiar with blogger burnout, which is why I stopped doing the A to Z Challenges. More power to those of you who stick with it!

Rita Coolidge has a lovely voice. Thanks for the updated bio. That is a tragic story about her sister. She and Kris Kristofferson were THE hippie music power couple back in the day (early 70s). I was sad when they broke up – they seemed so perfect for each other, on the surface. One never knows what goes on behind closed doors. Oh, that’s another good song from the era, by Charlie Rich.

You captured the snowfall beautifully from the kitchen window! I know you’re not a fan of cold and snow, so be glad you don’t live around here! I’m not that far away from Birgit (we hope to meet up one of these days when COVID disappears), and we got hammered with that same blizzard on Monday.

      Debbie,

I’m taking a hard look at the direction I want to pursue in the coming days. Once it clicks then I’m committed, so we’ll see where this takes me. Isn’t that true, we don’t know what goes on behind close doors. A celebrity life is full of glitz. We all fantasize about how wonderful his/her life is but it’s no different than ours and who knows maybe worse. I’m always saddened when I hear about someone of great talent who throws their life away because of drug/alcohol abuse. These are areas that some can dabble in without any horrible repercussion and then there are others that it will wreck their world forever. I wondered if you might live near Birgit after I read her message yesterday about the snowfall. Yikes two feet is a lot! Here’s hoping Covid goes away so y’all can meet up.

I am enjoying listening to Rita’s album. She has such a beautiful voice. I had no idea about her sister and her A-hole husband. I bet no one liked him and she was ready to leave and he couldn’t stand that. Rita must have been devastated to put it mildly.
On a better note, your pictures are so nice but we beat you in the snow department as we got almost 2 ft of snow just this past Monday. I always enjoyed sledding and have many fond memories doing this on my own and with friends and dogs. Once my mom joined in and it was funny to see her. I enjoy walking in the snow and hearing the crunch plus how it glitter like diamond dust in the moonlight.
I like butter on my popcorn..butter is a weakness of mine.
I like writing on my blog and it makes me feels good to read the comments and creating friendships from across the miles even if we have not met.
Time….funny as I am writing my post for tomorrow and it’s about time but yes, I always feel something will not take as much time as it truly does. I should learn and think what something may take and double or triple the time.
I was looking at some blogs I follow where they create cards , tags or journals and I saw a lot of yellow..sunny, bright and cheerful. I need to get back to card making which i have not done since September!

      Birgit,

Oh I can’t even imagine such pain! Whenever I hear stuff like that I’m always like, just kill yourself don’t take an innocent person with you, but those kinds of people aren’t in their right head. That’s so sad.

Yeah, you bet us by just a little in the snow department. LOL We got almost 2-feet of snow in 1993 when that blizzard came through and it was magical but good grief the city wasn’t equip to deal with it. Thankfully, the storm came in on Friday night. DH had to take the first the first two or three days off from work because the secondary streets were still a mess. The major roads were okay but the city didn’t have the manpower, salt, or equipment to take care of every street in town. One supervisor told DH that they rely on Mother Nature to do her thing. lol Luckily, the sun came out to help with the clearing process.

I like real butter on my popcorn but I prefer to only eat it on rare occasions. It’s a treat like that but honestly it’s hard to beat plain, salted popcorn. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your responses to the questions.

I’m old so I’m aware of Rita’s music. I must say the 2018 songs I’ve not heard. No surprise there.

I know you’re going to to the A to Z Challenge. You won’t be able to resist and I’ll be here to enjoy whatever you do.

Thank you for hosting the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday, Cathy. Love and hugs back. ♥

      Sandee,

You’re not old, seasoned but not old! 🙂 You’re right, I will do the A2Z Challenge. I can’t help myself. I need to figure out what I want to do. I’m sure it’ll involve art since that brings me so much joy. Still, I need motivation. Maybe, I’ll find some over the weekend. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, my dear!

I haven’t heard any of these songs ever, CK, allthough I remember her name. Will look into her songs to find something recognizable 😀 Warm Pawkisses for now🐾😽💞

Good tunes, Rita is a keeper! I agree, we don’t need more snow, we’re pretty much done with Winter here, go away please!

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday, dear friend!

I didn’t see anything in this morning’s post about your friend Marie, so I assume she is doing better. I want to apologize for neglecting to send prayers for her yesterday. As you recall, I had been awake since 2:50 am yesterday, and admit that I was half asleep when I read your post. I must have missed your paragraph about Marie, unless it was a case of you adding it after I had already left a comment. I send prayers for her recovery.

Yessum, you stated in your comment on my site yesterday that the week is getting away from you. I can easily see how that could happen if you are determined to publish daily. With the A to Z looming, you will need to decide where to draw the line, how many features and hops to get involved with and how many to remove from the schedule to avoid burnout. Every one of my posts takes 4 or 5 days to produce, and that’s why I don’t do blog hops and challenges. I would never be able to keep up the pace. It is already a load to properly service the few accounts I have, compose creative posts of my own and leave time for actual life away from the internet with family and friends.

I’m glad you brought us up to date on artist Rita Coolidge. In recent years, I lost track of her, too. I did recall that she was once hitched to singer, songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson. Thanks for the tidbits about her being an artist and that she tragically lost her sister who was killed by her husband in a murder – suicide. I enjoyed listening to Rita’s 2018 album Safe in The Arms of Time. My favorite song is “Spirit World” which calls for unity and inspires hope for the future of mankind. “Naked All Night” is another good one.

Happy Nat’l Popcorn Day! I’m with you on the popcorn question. I prefer it plain and salted. Your answer to question #2 resonates as well. I find that everything I do, if I am determined to do it correctly, to do it well, takes a longer than expected. When planning my days, I have learned to adjust for that reality and allow larger blocks of time for various tasks and activities. I enjoyed reading about your blizzard of 1993. Yessum, wet, heavy snow and/or a coating of ice can be murder on tree branches. I’m sorry you lost some evergreens in that major weather event, but happy that your house wasn’t damaged and that you only lost power for a short period of time. Thanks for showing us a clip of your recent snowfall from storm Izzy. (That’s Mrs. Shady’s sister’s name.) Your camera captured a peaceful scene that day. I would have loved being there gazing out the window and watching the flakes fall, a sight I haven’t seen in person in many years.

Hugs & Kisses to you, dear friend Cathy. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

      Tom,

I have no updates on Marie to share today. I will send her an email by the week’s end to see how she’s doing. I’m fairly confident she’ll be spending much of her time sleeping. I hope she can get that pneumonia cleared up. I know it’s a good thing to get up to move around but she’s having issues with her leg(s) again making it really difficult for her get mobile. This concerns me. All I can do is trust God by placing her in His capable hands.

If I got up early as you did yesterday, I’d have the same troubles as you, so don’t think anything of it. We all have times like that. Hopefully you were able to get a full night’s sleep last night.

I’m getting to the point where I need to not participate in daily blog hops just to bring a bit of calm into my world. Like you when I do posts, it takes me multiple days to pull it together especially anything pertaining to music. I love reading and learning about my subjects. This is part of the fun.

DH and I love popcorn but we don’t eat it often because it can bother our tummies. It’s really a good snack food, though.

Oh that’s cool to know about Miss Shady’s sister. I betcha she’s got a little ribbing last week, huh? Thanks for dropping by, dear friend. Have a wonderful day!
