Monday's Music Moves Me

I Heard It On The Radio

Awww Mondays hosted by Sandee from Comedy Plus.

Welcome to the Sunday edition of Monday’s Music Moves Me.  Patrick came up with an excellent theme for this week.  He wants us to build a playlist of songs we heard on the radio for National Radio Day.  In my early teen years during the summer I listened to a lot of radio if I were in a place where I could get a good signal.  Ear buds had not yet been invented.  We wore large over the ear headphones if we wanted to keep the music to ourselves. I didn’t have headphones.  The closest I came a pillow speaker.  For those who don’t know what that it is, it’s basically a single speaker you lay under your pillow, disc shape about 5-6 inches in diameter with a headphone jack to connect to your stereo.  I used it when I went to bed.  I loved to drift off to dreamland with pre-recorded tunes playing in the background.

I apologize, sometimes these weekly prompts causes me to reflect on memories and I’m sidelined temporarily.  Anyway, the summer of 1976 I spent with my uncle, Randy, and his wife, Relaine.  At the time, they lived in Columbus Ohio.  Relaine had family in the area.  Her sister had a big above ground pool and I went frequently splash around or laze on a float listening to the pop radio station for hours!  I had no trouble putting together a fun list of a dozen songs.  I could’ve added more but I figured 12 was enough to ask of you to listen to and if you don’t have time to hear them now then come back when you do.  I love long having a long playlist going in the background while I do other things in Blogosphere and around the house.

National Radio Day playlist:

  1. Silly Love Songs ~Paul McCartney & Wings
  2. Short People ~Randy Newman
  3. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart ~Elton John & Kiki Dee
  4. A Fifth of Beethoven ~Walter Murphy
  5. Fly Robin Fly ~Silver Convention
  6. Sara Smile ~Hall and Oates
  7. Love Rollercoaster ~Ohio Player
  8. [Shake, Shake, Shake] Shake Your Booty ~KC & the Sunshine Band
  9. Dream Weaver ~Gary Wright
  10. Shannon ~Henry Gross
  11. Shop Around ~Captain & Tennille

I may have to revisit this theme another week because the music from the 70s totally rocked!

The theme this week is to build a playlist of songs you heard on the radio for National Radio Day.

This is a music linky party.  Your co-hostess are StacyAlana, and Me.   Every other week we have a suggested music theme (see weekly prompts here) to build your song set around and all participants share YouTube or Vimeo videos for our music enthusiasts.  Failure to meet this basic guideline puts your URL in danger of being removed or labeled – NO MUSIC.

I so enjoyed all these songs which bring back some fun memories of my childhood. Short people song always makes me think of my mom because she agreed with it and she was only 5′ 2″. Lol

Thanks for that blast from the past, Cathy! 🙂 In 1976, I was 21 and having fun with hubby and friends. There were a lot of parties. 😀 Those tunes are all familiar, with Dream Weaver, especially, holding many memories.

      Debbie,

The magic that’s cast when you revisit the past through music is simply delightful. I usually can’t remember specifics but I do sense the emotions of those moments in time. Thanks stopping by, my dear!

Nice selection I always laughed when the short people song would play on the radio, Celestine was laughing as well but i wounder if it did not bug her a little. she was a few inches shorter than i was

      Nicole,

Trying to catch up on comments can be daunting. Don’t sweat it, get to any or all of your visitors when you can. We all understand life happens. I’m sorry you’re dealing with too many health issues. Hopefully your condition will improve allowing all of this to settle down soon. Health is something we often take for granted until we find ours in peril. You take care of yourself first. The rest of us can wait. 😉

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Paw-some 4M Monday on Sunday, dear friend! I hope you and DH had a nice week and are well and in good spirits
    this weekend.

Awww… I just wanna smooch that kitty listening to a show through his earbuds, but I think he’s using it to fall asleep. Maybe it’s one of those “learn while you cat nap” programs. 🙂

I always enjoy when you share memories of childhood and young adulthood, because your stories help me get to know you better. Some of my happiest memories stem from the years my family had a large above ground swimming pool in the backyard. It was constantly in use by our family, our relatives and the neighborhood kids. I mounted the speakers of my stereo system on the window sill of my bedroom and aimed them toward the pool so that I could float around on a raft and listen to my tunes. Sometimes I hung my transistor radio on the ladder and listened to my favorite top 40 station. Those were great times.

I know and like every song on your mid 70s playlist. As you recall, Shady’s Place “hostess with the mostest” Meg Griffin played “Silly Love Songs” by McCartney & Wings on her Frantic Romantic show earlier this month, and “Dream Weaver” is featured in my current post, show #2 of Strange Magic Being Erica starring Erica Strange. Mrs. Shady is known for spontaneously bursting into song, and one of the songs she loves to sing is “Short People.” Although I am on the tall side and not teased by the song, I always found it irritating. As you might know, Randy Newman wrote and performed “It’s A Jungle Out There,” the theme song of the hit TV series Monk. Wow, that’s a fabulous clip of Elton John and Kiki Dee performing their hit duet “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” I remember it well. Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven” seemed to be playing on the radio all the time that year. It was just one of several pop hits directly inspired by classical music. As you might remember, there was a successful album released in 1981 entitled “Hooked on Classics.” Other examples include Barry Manilow’s hit single “Could It Be Magic” adapted from Chopin’s “Prelude in C Minor No. 20,” and The Beatles hit “Because” which came from Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” “Fly Robin Fly” was one of the most memorable disco hits. “Love Rollercoaster” was an example of the sound popularized by several Ohio-based funk bands of the period. The final song in your block, “Shop Around” by Captain & Tennille, is a cover of the chart-topping 1961 hit by The Miracles, the first in a long string of million sellers for the Smokey Robinson led Motown group.

You forgot to include it on your list, but Maxine Nightingale’s dance hit “Right Back Where We Started From” is my Pick to Click for this post. You found a wonderful clip of Maxine performing her signature song on the Dutch TV series Top Pop.

Thanks for the morning mewsic & memories, dear friend Cathy, and have a wonderful week ahead!

      Tom,

Thanks for dropping by this morning. Our weekend has been quite busy. We cut our hair on Friday after DH got off work and yesterday, we spent all day outside working on the yard. That’s always such hard work. Feeling exhausted and sore last night when we crawled in bed and both of us waking during the night with leg cramps, we’re rebounding pretty quickly much to our surprise today. God is totally good! I’m hope you’re enjoying a lovely weekend and that you’re feeling well.

Yes, I remember in your recent post with Meg Griffin’s feature “Silly Love Song” and I was thinking then that you’d find it interesting that I pulled the same tune off the virtual shelf to spin but what a coincidence we both are sharing “Dream Weaver” today. What are the odds? I never got why people took offense to Randy Newman’s “Short People”. Some said it was targeting truly short people midgets. I don’t know if there’s any truth to that. I always considered myself short but really 5’2″ is the low side of an average height for a girl. I do feel like a giant when I’m standing beside those who are less than 5′ tall. 🙂 I do remember now that you mention it that Captain & Tennille’s “Shop Around” is a cover. I didn’t forget Maxine Nightingale’s hit, I just didn’t want to make my set too long. It definitely deserves a place on this playlist, though.

Have a boogietastic week, my friend!
