Battle of the Bands,  Thursday Art Date

Ghouls & Guys #BoTB Ghost(s) In The Wind showdown #artsketch

Here we are in the 10th month of two thousand twenty of the Lord. A few weeks ago earth’s equinox adjusted itself again, soon autumn’s splendor will be visible to the eye.  October’s chill is a welcome after summer’s heat and I love to wear my cozy socks, sweats and a fleece jacket around the house. I find it especially relaxing to sip on something warm, especially in the early hours to get my brain in tune for the day.

Today I’m rolling two challenges into one post.  It’s been awhile for me to get in on Rain’s Thursday Art Date, so I’m excited to share my ‘Ghouls & Trolls‘ art sketch which

It appears ghouls & trolls aren’t different from girls & guys in this pencil drawing. 🙂

I sketched this before I did my realistic eyes illustration that I shared a few weeks ago. I had hoped to go back for a retry of this but ran short on time. Incidentally, it was Rain’s art prompt that inspired my Ghouls & Guys battle, I decided to use two songs with similar titles.

First up is my ghoul, Birdy with Ghost in the Wind.

Next up is my troll, Richard Thompson with (link to song only–>”Ghosts in the Wind“.

You’ll find more awesome battles underway at some of these blog listed below and if you’d like to be included in the fun, then contact Stephen requesting to be added to the list.

Polls close noon (EST) on the 7th!

Who gets your vote Birdy or Richard?

Next week, same time I’ll be back to announce the winner in this round, so be sure to mark your calendar to see if your favorite artist wins in this showdown.

Today I’m joining the Thankful Thursday community. I’m making an effort to work into my daily content something new with the hopes of broadening my reading audience while sharing something new for my loyal bloggy friends.

  1. I’m thankful for now there is nothing wrong with the crowned tooth I went to see the dentist about on Tuesday and I’m glad DH’s dental appointment went well, too.
  2. I’m thankful that we’ll soon be able to pickup our Avalon from the body shop.
  3. I’m thankful that the trucking company’s insurance provided us with a rental car for the past couple of weeks.
  4. I’m thankful that we got the windshield replaced in the Avalon at the same time the body working was being done. The cracked windshield was not related to the accident. Something struck it one morning while DH was heading to work.  He drives so to not put the car at risk of such things but you can’t always know when something is going to come at you.
  5. I’m very thankful for the manger at the body shop that we use. He’s a great fellow who does his best to accommodate our wishes and the quality of his shop’s work is A1!

Have a doodletastic day! X💋X💋, Cathy

      Rain,

I’m glad you found time in your busy, busy schedule to check out my illustration for ghouls & trolls. I have much to be thankful for as does many others. It’s nice to share our blessings big or small. Have a good weekend, dearie!

    HiYa, CAThy! It’s that you?

Happily, Blogger’s new bibbidi-bobbidi-boo doesn’t affect in the least my ability to leave comments on da blogs of other folks. So, here I am! Lucky you, lucky you!! [;oD

Both songs were a shade too minimalist for my tastes. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the RICHARD THOMPSON tune a bit more because A) it was a bit less minimalist, and B) because 8 out of 10 times I prefer male vocalists to female vocalists. I can’t say why that is. It’s certainly not that I’m a sexist, and it’s certainly not that I’m not heterosexual. (That means that I AM heterosexual! I want to be clear about that. …”Not that there’s anything wrong with that“.) 😉

Which winking smiley face do you like best? This one
    [;oD
    or this one
    😉
    ?

The survival of the free world may depend upon your answer! But no pressure.

Stephen, good ole friend! I’m delighted you found a moment to participate in my battle. Going with my theme I found my choices limited so I picked the best ones to my ear for this showdown. Like you, I prefer male to female vocals usually. I think I like man’s voice better because it’s in the lower register which come across as more mellow. I like women who either sing soft and breathy or in the middle, not growly or super low if that makes any sense. Think of Anne Murry or Alison Kraus’ vocal range as examples of mid-tone that I tried to described. I have you down for RICHARD THOMPSON. No pressure, I’m happy to pick my favorite smiley face for ya. I’d have to say I like the cute icon winky the best. 😉 Have an awesome day, my friend!

  • Nicole/DVArtist

You made me giggle with our troll art. Very nice indeed. You nailed that expression. OK, I am not sure if I tell you my favorite pick here or somewhere else but Richard Thomas is my fave. I watched listened twice. There is so much to be thankful for in times that seem less than. I am thankful every day that we have a home to live in. Oh, my fave movies are vampire, werewolves, and most of all zombies. I am with you I do not like slasher movies. Enjoy your day.

      Nicole,

I’m glad you enjoyed my art. Rain’s prompts are fun. 🙂 I’m very glad you picked your favorite artist RICHARD THOMPSON in my showdown. Like you, I agree I have much to be thankful for, too. Thanks for dropping in, my friend!

  • NatureFootstep

lol, I agree with you, your drawing is probably right. We behave much the same. 🙂
Love your second song. This is the feeling I get every time I visit a ruin of an old home 🙁

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Monica,

There’s an old logging community in the Smoky’s where there are many old home still standing. They aren’t safe to enter but what’s interesting is some still have curtain remnants still hanging for the wind to catch which makes me think of a ghost moving. Thanks for visiting, dearie!

        • Cathy Kennedy

Interesting battle you have going on. For some reason, I was expecting DUST in the Wind… and it didn’t happen for me. Oh well. Each were quite different. I believe I will be voting for your TROLL in this battle.

Thanks for joining in my RocktoberMusicFest! Looking forward to a great month of Rock and Roll!

Love your Femme fatale with the Ghouls-a really good drawing especially her face. This is a cool song and I give it to Birdy because of the ethereal quality. She made it sound haunting with a bit of Celtic in there for me…probably imagining that but I could see her sing Celtic songs. RT is great as well but I love her. You have a lot to be thankful for regarding that accident and how everything is coming together.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Birgit,

Thanks for checking out my Ghoul Femme fatale. She has a look that kills.lol

I’m so happy that things are finally coming together. The accident from last November weighed on us a lot initially and then the pandemic didn’t help, so to say we’re just about ready to put this behind us is feeling pretty good. I hope there aren’t any more auto accidents or car trouble in the near future. We’ve had our share of them in the past couple of years all of which aren’t our fault with the exception of my mishap in the driveway. 🙂

I’ll mark you down for BIRDY. Thanks for playing along, my dear.

  • Brian

Cool ghoul sketch today! The kitties here all vote for Birdy, of course. That’s a wonderful list of thankfuls today and thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Brian,

I’m glad you got to stop by to read my TT list and to vote in my first battle for October. I have to know, are you going with BIRDY because you like the name of the artist or is it her song? lol Thanks for playing along!

  • Sandee

    I always love your sketches.

I’ll cast my vote for Birdy.

You have a wonderful list of thankful things. Excellent.

Have a fabulous Thankful Thursday, Cathy. Love and hugs. ♥

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Sandee,

I’m glad you stopped by for a peek at my illustration today. Your visits are always welcomed. I’m doubly glad you voted in my battle. Another vote for BIRDY! 😉

  • Arlee Bird

I wish you could send me some of that autumn chill as we still got summer heat here. Supposed to be in the 100’s today as I guess it’s been the past couple days. I miss the fall weather from TN.

After I woke up after listening to Birdy, I fell back asleep again to Richard Thompson’s song. They are both very pretty songs, but maybe not what I need to be hearing at 5 AM as I linger between wanting to go back to bed and heading to get my new day started.

I’ve been a longtime fan of Richard Thompson. This ethereal sounding song of his wouldn’t rank as a favorite of mine from his catalogue, but in this Battle I prefer it to Birdy.

    A vote for Richard Thompson.

      Lee,

I wish I could send you some of our East Tennessee weather. It’s a refreshing change. In fact, Friday night’s low is forecast to be in the low 40s. I might have to throw another blanket on the bed.

Getting up early and trying to figure out which song you like in a battle is challenging sometimes. It often plays on how I vote. I’ll put you down for RICHARD THOMPSON in this round. Thanks for swinging by, my friend!

      • Arlee Bird

Hold the presses!! Go back and take a look. My vote was for Richard Thompson and not the other even though my name might indicate otherwise.

Just wanted to clarify so your vote tally is correct.

        • Cathy Kennedy

          Lee,

Thanks for calling this to my attention. Tom sent me an email also letting me know. I will correct my original comment to reflect your vote properly. Sorry for the goof, I guess it was too early this morning for me. 🙂

  • Elke

That is good this drawing great to rains theme. Videos are so fun scary!!!
this is a very nice thanksgiving what happened so everything for you.
Have a happy day and take care of yourself, Elke

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Elke,

Thanks for joining me for Rain’s art date. I’m glad that you enjoyed your visit. Everything worked out okay well so far. Hopefully today we can pick up our car and will be completely happy with all the work. Have a wonderful day!

  • Thomas Anderson

    Hi, Cathy!

Happy Rain Date Thankful Thursday & BOTB Day, dear friend!

I think Ghouls & Trolls should be turned into a Broadway musical replacing Guys & Dolls. 🙂 I don’t see why you would need to change the eyes on the shapely woman in your sketch. With her “deer in headlights” expression, it is clear that those trolls are creeping her out.

In your band battle, you asked us to choose between two different songs with almost identical titles and two English artists – female singer, songwriter and musician Birdy, and singer, songwriter, and guitarist Richard Thompson. Birdy’s song “Ghost In The Wind” is taken from the OST of the 2015 coming of age film Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson. It took me a while to get into the song, but I did, and I like it a lot. “Ghosts In The Wind,” a different song from Richard Thompson’s 1985 album Across a Crowded Room is another gem of a recording. Richard has a deep, rich, soulful voice that reminds me of Eric Clapton. i thoroughly enjoyed his dark, moody, atmospheric “Ghosts” recording and it won me over even more so than Birdy’s song. Therefore, in a tough decision, I give my vote to Richard.

I enjoyed your TT answers. I am thankful because it has turned pleasantly cooler in my neck of the woods. It feels delightful. On our recent trip to North Carolina a stone hit our windshield and left a crack that will need to be repaired by the glass doctor.

Thank you for the morning entertainment, dear friend Cathy!

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Good morning, Tom!

I’m thankful to have you join me today, my friend. 🙂

My gal ghoul has that deer in the headlights look. I monkeyed around with the original redoing the eyes. I made a bit of a mess. It’s so hard fixing a pencil sketch. I’m eager to redo the illustration using Procreate but I’m pretty busy so I’m not sure when I can do that.

I hate it when stuff hits the windshield. A little stone can do a lot of damage. I know the glass is strong and engineered so to not explode inward on the passengers with minor mishaps but you’d think they could do even more in our modern age. Perhaps, no matter how good they get it, it’ll never be enough to keep impacted material hitting a car’s windshield from harm. Unfortunately, ours has all the sensors which makes it an expensive replacement. The crack was too long to fill in. 🙁

I’m glad to know that you enjoyed both songs and artists in this BoTB. I’ll put you down for RICHARD THOMPSON in this showdown. Have a good day of thanksgiving. Stay safe and well, good friend!
