10 Blue Song Titles #4M + #BoTB & #Sparks

Good morning, Kittens and Dawgs! Dang, here it is the middle of January!! If this is sign that another year will zip out of sight then I’d like to stop the world from spinning so I can get off. Anywho, it’s fabulous to see you. I will warn you now, this is gonna be a long post so feel free to read through or fast-forward to the area you’re most interested in. Are you ready to groove to some mewsic? Excellent. This week’s Monday’s Mewsic Moves Me theme is “Colors in Song Titles” which I decided to use one of my favorite colors with these 10 Blue Song Titles!

  1. Love is Blue” (cover) by Marty Robbins. This isn’t the first time I shared this song, I did so last July. It’s one of my favorites from the late 60s.
  2. Blue On Blue” by Bobby Vinton hit the charts in 1963. I was too young at the time to know this but Google tells me his song stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 13 weeks peaking at No. 3. It also charted No. 2 on the Billboard Middle-Road Singles Chart. Interestingly, Vinton’s success with this song prompted him to record an entire blue-themed album which produced an even bigger hit, “Blue Velvet” which I almost used today. 🙂
  3. Blue Moon of Kentucky” (cover) by LeAnn Rimes, originally written as a Waltz in 1946 by Bluegrass mewsician, Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Many artists recorded this oldie but it was Elvis Presley who turned the classic into a pop tune.
  4. Jackie Blue” by southern rock band The Ozark Mountain Daredevils is an international hit, reaching No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart and stayed for two weeks in May 1975. “Jackie Blue” is the bands’ best charting single.
  5. Crystal Blue Persuasion” by Tommy James & The Shondells” became one of the groups biggest hits in 1969, ranking 2 on Billboard Pop Singles where it stayed for 3-weeks. James told Hitch Magazine in 1985 that he came up with the song title from the Bible. This is what he said, “I took the title from the Book of Revelations in the Bible, reading about the New Jerusalem. The words jumped out at me, and they’re not together; they’re spread out over three or four verses. But it seemed to go together, it’s my favorite of all my songs and one of our most requested.” Wiki says, James’ manager recalls James was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel, which (he remembered as) speaking of a blue Shekhinah light that represented the presence of the Almighty God, and of the Book of Isaiah and Book of Revelation, which tell of a future age of brotherhood of mankind, living in peace and harmony. I thought this tidbit was fascinating to learn considering many thought the song was referencing crystal meth or a blue colored LSD tablet available at the time. I’d like to think drugs had no part of the picture but only God knows the answer.
  6. Blue Collar Man” by Styx released in 1979 as a single from Pieces of Eight album. The song reached No. 9 in the US. I’m not a vinyl collector but I read that some issues got pressed on a translucent blue vinyl and is a highly sought after collectible.
  7. Blue Eyes” by Elton John isn’t one of my favorite songs by him. I could’ve gone with a different color song title like “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” but I have a theme to keep. 😉  “Blue Eyes” did well, though. It rode the Billboard Hot 100 charts for three weeks, peaking at # 12 and it took #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts for two weeks.
  8. Forever in Blue Jeans” by Neil Diamond released the year we married (1979). Although, I liked some of Diamond’s song I wasn’t really fan.  I barely remember this song. I liked this little fact  I found at Wikipedia…According to Cotton Incorporated “Neil Diamond might have been right when he named his 1979 #1 hit “Forever in Blue Jeans”: 81% of women are planning their next jeans purchase to be some shade of blue.” The song has been used to promote the sale of blue jeans, most notably Will Ferrell, impersonating Neil Diamond singing, for The Gap. Coincidentally, Diamond himself did radio ads for H.I.S. brand jeans in the 1960s, more than a decade before he sang this song.
  9. Bluer Than Blue” by country, pop artist Michael Johnson is one of many entertainers who passed last year and its with this song many associate the artist with.  “Bluer Than Blue” released in 1978 and became Johnson’s first hit song topping the adult contemporary chart for three weeks.
  10. Blue Suede Shoes” (cover) by Elvis Presley is the version I remember but it was Carl Perkins‘s original Cash box Best Selling singles for 16-weeks and riding the #2 position for 2-weeks.  Elvis performed the song three times on National TV shows in 1956.  Wiki cited Moore saying this about the song…”Presley recorded the song to help out Perkins after his accident. Elvis wasn’t really thinking at that time that it was going to make money for Carl; he was doing it as more of a tribute type thing. Of course Carl was glad he did. It really helped as his record started going down.” Presley’s version did well on the charts (#20) but didn’t come close to Perkins’ success. It sounds like the King had a soft spot in his heart for helping others.

What mewsic moves you today?

Hold on to your hat, the mewsic isn’t over yet. It’s now time for round two of Battle of the Bands! Today I’m using my 4M theme inspiration for today’s battle song choice, except I’m giving you three song titles featuring the key words blue jeans.

Song #1 is by Train with Danny Trejo lip syncing the lyrics at time to “Angel in Blue Jeans”.  It’s kind of funny watching Trejo pretending to sing because his appearance definitely does not match Patrick Monahan’s vocals.

Song #2 is an oldie. I’m not 100% sure who did it first one sources claims Bruce Bruno released “Venus in Blue Jeans” in 1962 but the guy who shared this music video says, Barry Mann released it first in 1955 before recording it in 1961. It doesn’t matter to me, though. I like Mann’s version better than Bruno’s anyhow. *UPDATE A new source clarified these facts… Mann recorded the demo in 1961. Bruno first commercial release in 1962. Jimmy Clanton covered the song in ’62 (US #7) and Mark Wynter’s cover charted in the UK at number 4 in the same year.

Song #3 is the only cover in this battle. A Neil Diamond cover of “Forever in Blue Jeans” by Idol hopeful, Jason Castro.

Ok, here’s the drill. Voting is open to everyone visiting. There is NO wrong vote, except if you DON’T vote. You can start by telling me in comments which artist or in this case song you like best and why (optional).

Who gets your vote, Angel, Venus, or Forever… in Blue Jeans?

You’ll find more awesome battles underway at some of these blog listed below (not everyone is doing the bi-monthly showdowns now) and if you’d like to be included in the fun, then contact Stephen requesting to be added to the list.

  1. Hey there Cathy! Long time! I know, I’ve been MIA…Due to life. What else? 🙂
Everything is starting to come together so I should be back in action next week hopefully. I didn’t have a battle ready for this month and I didn’t have time to finish my 4M Color post but I’m still working on it and hopefully will have it finished by this coming Monday’s freebie.

Love your Blue songs! When I saw the first song, I thought I didn’t know it but as soon as it started playing, I recognized it right away. However I don’t believe I’ve ever heard it with lyrics! I’ve only known this song as an instrumental. Interesting! Great blue songs. Jackie Blue is one of my very favorites.

Love how you tied the blue theme into your battle. My vote is definitely for Train’s Angel in Blue Jeans. Quite a story, that video! And so cool seeing Danny Trejo in it!

Have a great weekend. Will look forward to coming back to the land of the living… 🙂

    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. Michele,

I get it, life happens. I’m looking forward to your return to the blog world and I appreciate you stopping in to vote. Have a good weekend, dearie! 😉

      Angel (Train) – 4
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 4
      Forever (Jason Castro) -2

  2. I just found this so I guess it is too late for me to vote. AND, I don’t see Keith Urban on the list! No “Blue Ain’t Your Color”? I just can’t imagine what you were thinking. 😀 You have a lot of great BLUE songs. Ahhhhh Crystal Blue Persuasion….now THERE is a song……

    1. My BoTB is at the bottom of my post. It’s open through Saturday night. The song choices are “Angel in Blue Jeans”, “Venus in Blue Jeans”, & “Forever in Blue Jeans”. Thanks for dropping by and have a good weekend.

  3. Some of your mewsic I know, some I don’t so thanks for the added info. Should make for some nice listening for January blues. Your Spark is similar to my thought process this week. I hope your week is going well.

    1. Mike,

Got your vote recorded. The race is tightening up. Thanks for playing and boogieing with the 4M gang!

      Angel (Train) – 3
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 3
      Forever (Jason Castro) -2

  4. Howdy, CATHY!

I really like your “BLUE JEANS” theme!! I would have to say my favorite song mentioning blue jeans is ‘BLUE JEAN BLUES’ by ZZ Top. But if I were inclined to twist it, turn it, and cheat at it (which you know I would NEVER do) — selecting just the words “blue” and “jean” — I would go with this one:

Oh, I could hide ‘neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings
The six-o’clock alarm would never ring
But six rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
The shaving razor’s cold and it stings

    Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean to a
    Daydream believer and a
    Homecoming queen?

    Now for your Battle…

I’m voting for Barry Mann’s ‘VENUS IN BLUE JEANS’ for two reasons:

    1) It has that classic “old school” 1950s / early-’60s “Frankie” sound, like… Frankie Valli, Frankie Avalon, Frankie Lymon, Frankie Laine, and Neil Sedaka.

    2) …”the guy who shared this music video says, Barry Mann released it first in 1955 before recording it 1961.” Cathy, I take my hat off to anyone who can release a song BEFORE he’s even recorded it. That could only be done by a true genius!! :o)

STMcC Presents ‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS’

    1. Stephen,

The twist up in lyrics kinda go together. At least I’m imagining that they do. “Daydream Believer” I’ve always liked but ZZ Top’s song I think I only heard recently. Venus in Blue Jeans does have that old school sound. You know I wondered about fact #2 that you stated and after reading it, then it clicked just amazing that is and I laughed. Thanks for that, my friend. Gotcha down this round and now we’re in a two-way tie but everyone hasn’t voted yet. 🙂

      Angel (Train) – 3
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 3
      Forever (Jason Castro) -0

        1. Eugenia,

I’m so glad you’re playing along. Your vote pushed “Venus in Blue Jeans” ahead in the polls. 🙂

          Angel (Train) – 3
          Venus (Barry Mann) – 4
          Forever (Jason Castro) -2

  5. Thank you for your Sparks! Blessings are wonderful, always.
I enjoyed your video by Juan Castro. He reminds me of a friend of ours. Wojtek is now in Nashville, doing all kinds of music. He is amazing, too. He had dreadlocks when he was in college. Now he is 36, married, and has a baby.
The other jeans video (Mann)…I did not enjoy as much. You may soon need a warning label on your blog for the adult art & video content. Just sayin’. whew

    1. Annie,

So glad you enjoyed the Sparks. LOL…good point, there are a few of the pinup gals I used that are a little on the racy side. I’ll take it under advisement, dear friend. I’m not sure if you’re voting in the BoTB part or not but I’m going to put you down for Juan Castro since you said you liked him AND if you’re not then let me know. I’m happy to change it! 😉 Thanks for visiting. I hope you’re keeping warm. It’s cold here and just started snowing.

      Angel (Train) – 3
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 3
      Forever (Jason Castro) -1

      1. You don’t seem like one for racy pin-ups. After growing up with a creep, I know I am not! Just sayin’. Yes, my vote goes to Juan Castro. I have seen and heard him before. I do like him. He seems to be a gentle soul…I hope he is. We need more of them! Hugs, dear friend!

        1. Annie,

No explanations are needed. I totally get where you’re coming from, my friend. Excellent! I’m glad to hear your vote goes to Jason. Poor guy didn’t have any until now. I don’t know anything about him but I do remember him from AI. I think I actually like his cover over the original.

  6. Oh wow, sorry for being so late. We’ve been trying to put away all our Christmas stuff. Today was our dishes, cups and glasses. Up, down, down, up… Christmas stuff goes downstairs and back comes our normal stuff upstairs and everything gets washed and dryed first. aughhhhhhhh The tree is still being worked on too. Took off two more strings of lights… all the ornaments got done yesterday! Anyway back to rock & roll love, love, love your tunes you picked and I especially like the one by train and its video… too, too cool!!! I really liked that kid from American Idol too. I believe I voted for him quite a few times too! hehehehe~ Great job Cat… YOU ROCK!

    1. Marie,

No worries, my friend! You are a busy woman with a huge job to tackle. I knew you’d get around whenever it fit in your schedule. 🙂 I’m unclear if you’re voting in the BoTB portion or not but since you said you liked Train. I’m going to cast your vote in favor of him. If this isn’t right then let me know, girlfriend! Thanks for dancing with me. Have a good day and keep warm!

      Angel (Train) – 3
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 2
      Forever (Jason Castro) -0

  7. Several of these are favorites!! Personally, I love Elton John and Neil Diamond’s contribution to this blue review, but in honor of my Dad who LOVE BOBBY VINTON and played him every weekend, I have to give it to Blue on Blue.

    Great idea! Stay warm, neighbor.

    1. Cherdo,

Thanks for stopping in for a visit. The playlist isn’t part of my battle. You’ll find three songs at the bottom, Angel in Blue Jeans, Venus in Blue Jeans, and Forever in Blue Jeans for you to choice from this round. I’m sorry for the confusion. I know this post is a bit long. I do appreciate your time spent here. Now, I’ll hop over to see you! 😉

        1. Cherdo,

You’re not stooopid! 🙂 This post is really packed. I’m beginning to rethink putting so much content into one post. I believe it makes it difficult for folks to enjoy completely, what do you think? I’m glad you decided to come back to add your vote!

  8. These are awesome songs! Forever in Blue Jeans is an oldie and a favorite of mine. My brain wasn’t fully operational this morning so I could only think of one but it worked I think.

    Have a wonderful week!

  9. “Venus in Blue Jeans” is the song I would like to vote for. Please. That song has been in my head for days, and now here you are, featuring it… It would still have been my choice. I have never been on the Train train, and even though I watched American Idol faithfully, for several seasons, most of their contestants were terrible singers. This fellow was not someone I enjoyed.

Your ten song feature with accompanying information was fascinating.

    1. Myke,

The thing I found with AI and most other singing shows is the judges often get rid of the best talent leaving only average (or worse) singers for fans to vote on. Then the voters are another story. I think the majority of those who actually vote are 14-year-old boys & girls who do not have a good ear for mewsic. Thanks for voting in this round of BoTB, my friend.

      Angel (Train) – 2
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 2
      Forever (Jason Castro) -0

  10. Happy New Year, Cathy! 🙂 Blue is a popular colour used in songs and I enjoyed your selections. For BOTB, my vote goes to Train (you’re right – the video was funny!) and Angel in Blue Jeans.

    1. Debbie,

Happy New Year to you, too! I appreciate you taking time for a return visit and voting in my BoTB. I know how difficult it is to get back in the groove after being away for awhile. 😉

      Angel (Train) – 2
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 1
      Forever (Jason Castro) -0

  11. Excellent battle, Cathy! and wonderful use of the 4M Theme 🙂 I really enjoyed all of the songs, but for the battle, I’m going to have to cast my vote for Venus in Blue Jeans.

    ~Mary

    1. Mary,

Thanks for the return visit, my friend. I’m delighted you enjoyed my playlist and battle song choices for this round. It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out with three songs. Gotcha down for Venus is Blue Jeans!

      Angel (Train) – 1
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 1
      Forever (Jason Castro) -0

  12. Great Spark! Nice Blue choices, I would have included Leeann Rhimes- Blue too. 🙂

    1. Ellen,

Oh, yes I think that was an oversight. “Blue” is a good song by LeAnn. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe, I can use it on the dance floor another day. 🙂

    1. Sandee,

So glad you found time to stop in to boogie with me and get your weekly dose of encouragement. Isn’t “Sparks” such a wonderful way to uplift the mood? Have a great evening, my friend!

  13. Great songs. I did pick one “blue” song this week and that was Debbie’s Gibson’s “Out of the Blue”.

Hope you have a great Monday and week.

    1. Patrick,

I think it’s hard to do a theme about color without using a blue song title. I know Debbie Gibson was popular in the 80s but for some reason I forget about every single time until someone brings her up. I’m dancing your way now to see what you shared! 😉

  14. Thanks so much for stopping by!! I am also doing a series show Where DO I Put It All on my Christmas blog and hope to post monthly. I also have a regular blog that i am now back to posting on and will be sharing my Winter decor there…. Love all the songs that you mentioned here!!!
    Hugs,
    Deb

  15. Oh, my goodness. I haven’t heard “Crystal Blue Persuasion” in years but it popped into my head reading the title. I’m not sure if my mother played it for me or my big brother. Either way, it’s all good. Cheers!

  16. Lots of “blue” songs can be found. You hit on some of the biggies.

For your Battle, the choices are all pretty good, but my pick would be the song by Train. It just fits my style preference. The image of Trejo “singing” the song is pretty incongruous and funny.

    Lee
    Tossing It Out

    1. Lee,

You tapped into exactly how I felt about Trejo lipsynching to Train’s song. Thanks for dropping in to listen to my blue song playlist and voting in this mid-round of BoTB.

      Angel (Train) – 1
      Venus (Barry Mann) – 0
      Forever (Jason Castro) -0
