Memories of Thanksgiving – My Childhood #tbt

Puritan's Pride Vitamins

Purrs and hooowdys, Kittens & Dawgs! Thanksgiving is only weeks away. I thought I’d share a new series “Memories of Thanksgiving “. Today, I’m walking through the years of long ago past to my childhood!

In my early childhood years most events pass through my memory as snapshots and sensations. My maternal grandparents hosted a big feast in their tiny home nestled in the hills of southern West Virginia.  The house buzzed with activity, mostly grandma working on the meal. We often were the first to show since we lived nearby but soon others filed in and the kitchen filled with more help.

In the fun madness of it all, often times I escaped to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The ginormous balloons always fascinated me and naturally I loved seeing Santa concluding the grandeur.

After I got bored with TV, I often wondered back into the kitchen to watch the activity. Grandma peeked in on the turkey every little bit basting the bird with the steamy juices it nestled in while green beans from summer’s harvest flavored with bacon and new potatoes boiled as more pots simmered and spat on the stove top, and home-made rolls sat covered to grow before going into the oven. But… my favorite was the desserts! Cakes. Pies. Oh my, lining the countertops! I remember grandma warning me to keep my fingers out of the sweets, as if I would do such a thing. *snicker-snicker* Often her words fell on deaf ears but she definitely had my number!

The meal spread across the dinner table seemed immense to a small child and often times my eyes were bigger than my belly. I ate more than I should, which really wasn’t a lot, and became extremely sleepy after eating. No doubt, I found my way to the living room to curl upon the sofa for a little Cathy nap so I could dive into all those tasty desserts after the women cleaned up!

Did you spend Thanksgiving with your grandparents? What did you like best about the holiday as a child? What’s was  your favorite or most memorable dish or dessert?

Blessings and Honor + #BoTB results

Puritan's Pride Vitamins

Good morning, kittens & dawgs! It’s Thanksgiving week. If you’re like me then you have a lot to do which means we have little time to hang around Blogosphere. This week’s Thanksgiving celebration we have an extra reason to be thankful. In case you missed the mews on Friday, DH got a job offer and he accepted. I thought it only fitting to use songs not only representing my present mood but my overall appreciation for this special time of year set aside to give thanks and so my theme this week is Blessings and Honor!

How have you been blessed recently or over the past year? A couple of years ago, I wrote 10 Thanksgiving Blessings; many of those blessings still apply today. What are you looking forward to most about Thanksgiving? Can you think of any other songs falling in line with today’s theme?

In my last BoTB round, I asked you to vote on your favorite Victory Song between Gonna Fly Now and Chariots of Fire. The predominant leader and consequently the winner in this showdown, as if this is any surprise to y’all, is…. Gonna Fly Now with a 8 to 3 victory!

I knew almost from the start that Gonna Fly Now (Rocky theme song) got my vote but I didn’t want to influence any of my lovelies. I invite you to check with Stephen to see how the other battles went down!

Now it’s time for me to fly. Thank you for including me in your Monday and I’ll do my level best to respond and make return visits. 😉 I’m linking with the ? party hosted by the Monday’s Music Moves Me crew and you’re welcome to come with and don’t forget to hop back for not-so Wordless Wednesday!

Blessings of friendship

“Friendship isn’t a big thing – it’s a million little things.”  ~Author Unknown

Thank you for the blessing of friendship. I hope you and your family enjoy God’s bounty around the table today and even though your life might be lacking some things; there is always reason to count the blessings before you.

I’m away from cyberspace this week, but I’ll see you next week. Have a blessed time with your family and Happy Thanksgiving!

Give Thanks

Home Sweet Home #BOTB showdown

The months are dropping off the calendar like the autumn leaves. We have enjoyed some beautiful colors in the Appalachian mountains lately; we are very thankful to live in a beautiful part of the country.

This is my reflection time of the year; to be  precise I count my blessings of my home. My parents’ home; the cornerstone of my early spiritual development, loved unconditionally, and protected from worldly wiles. This home, the home DH and I formed with our children. It’s not perfect, but its full of fond memories, lots of love, and is a cozy refuge from life’s storms.

There’s no place like, Home Sweet Home.

(This is only for reference)

You know I’m a dreamer, but my heart’s of gold
I had to run away high so I wouldn’t come home low
Just when things went bad doesn’t mean they were always wrong
Just take this song and you’ll never be left all alone
Take me to your heart – feel me in your bones
Just one more night and I’m coming off this long and winding road

I’m on my way
I’m on my way
Home Sweet Home
Tonight, tonight, I’m on my way
I’m on my way
Home Sweet Home

You know that I’ve seen too many romantic dreams
Up in lights falling on the silver screen
My heart’s like an open book for the whole world to read
Sometimes nothing keeps me together at the seams

I’m on my way
I’m on my way
Home Sweet Home
Tonight, tonight, I’m on my way
Just set me free
Home Sweet Home…

I’m on my way
I’m on my way
Home Sweet Home
Yeah, I’m on my way
Just set me free
Home Sweet Home

Although I am not a heavy metal fan, this is one song by Motley Crue that I enjoy. Today, I will share two contemporary country artists covering the 1985 original.

I give you contender # 1, Justin Moore.

Now, listen to contender #2, Carrie Underwood.

Do you count the blessings of your home when you give thanks? Are you grateful for your home despite the faults you see in it?  I do and even though I’d rather live in my dream house I know I have it better than many others; this brings things into perspective and humbles me in the process.

Okay, you know what to do, leave your vote in comments and tell me why your liked your pick the best. Meanwhile the fun continues with more epic battles taking place on these amazing bloggers sites. Check ’em out!

10 Thanksgiving Blessings

  1. I am thankful to serve a living God. His abundant love for me on Calvary’s hill chastens my soul and my heart swells with the appreciation for His sacrifice on the cross.
  2. I am thankful for my soul mate, my DH. He is more than my husband. He is my best buddy, my provider, my lover, my knight in shining armor, my confidant, my EVERYTHING! Life is better because he is in it.
  3. I am thankful for our parents. For the gift of their presence with their exemplary morals, immeasurable experiences, and unconditional love that shaped who we are today.
  4. I am thankful for our siblings. For their continuing love and support that with each passing the year that kindles my heart.
  5. I am thankful for our family. I am grateful for being a SAHM with the chance to watch our babies grow into fine adults. Through the good and bad there is no way for me to feel other than children are blessings from God.
  6. I am thankful for my health. To be a member of the 50-something club, I count my blessings twice. I do not need a knee replacement or have high blood pressure or have any other consortium of ailments that restrict my ability to get up and move ~ a luxury that’s easy to take for granted.
  7. I am thankful for our quaint home. Despite my frustrations of tight space and no room to move, it is humbling to think that others do not have a place to call home and I feel blessed to have my little haven.
  8. I am thankful for DH’s job. It’s great to have him in town since 2010 after a decade of working out-of-town. He works in an excellent environment along with similar minded people that he considers as good friends and where corporate seems thoughtful of its employees.
  9. I am thankful to live in America. Born and raised in the good ole USA, I like to think I live in God’s country in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. It’s a blessing to experience the change of the seasons, even when I am less than happy with the unpleasant temperature shifts my heart still smiles.
  10. I am thankful for the brave men and women in the armed services who diligently defend the American way of life in keeping this land home of the free. You rock!

Finally, in closing let me say there is one more blessing I’d like to count and that’s the blessing of friends. Old friends and new, friends like you make my day a little more special with a kind act of your visit and comment. Thank you for making my life sweeter!

What blessings are you counting today?
