Lake Lure, North Carolina & Hodgepodge Q&A #WW

Welcome Kittens & Dawgs! Last month while visiting some of the western North Carolina mountain communities, we went through Lake Lure. You may recall a couple of  years ago I shared images of the Lake Lure Inn with you.  That’s it across the lake.

Facing the Lake Lure to my right you’d be heading toward Asheville. Not far from the Inn is the police department and public parking where we discovered a nice walking trail. It was a lovely day for late December and the temperature was nice.

We didn’t spend too much time here but I could’ve have easily. We were on our way to Forest City, which you may remember I shared with photos a few weeks ago.

There were a dozen or more geese feeding in the park.  They didn’t seem too worried about us and made very little effort to scurry away. Oh sure they honked and waddled a bit but that’s about it. A few acted like they were posing for me. 🙂

Please join my linky party if you have photos to show off today!

Next is my Wednesday Hodgepodge segment hosted by Joyce. This is an excellent way to get to know your fellow blogger and you’re invited to play alone.  Here are my responses.

1. What keeps you blogging?  Blogging is a way for me to stay connected with others. Years ago, I pen palled a lot. I had nearly 200 friends around the globe who I wrote to regularly. However, as I got more active with the internet this part of my life slipped and while I tried keeping up with email that eventually dwindled. Although I initially began blogging to promote my children’s book which fizzled eventually but amazingly,  I discovered a wonderful circle of friends. The blogging platform lets me share my creativity with others and allows me to enjoy what others have to offer. So, what keeps me blogging? It’s you, my friends! 😉

2. Some people like to travel in the winter months. Do you enjoy the beach in winter? According to Southern Living the best U.S. beach towns to visit this winter are –  St Simons Island (Georgia), Hilton Head (South Carolina), Bald Head Island (North Carolina), Seaside (Florida), Bay St. Louis (Mississippi), Cape San Blas (Florida), South Padre Island (Texas), Folly Beach (South Carolina), Chincoteague (Virginia), Duck Key (Florida), Nags Head (North Carolina), and Fairhope (Alabama)

Have you been to any of the towns listed (in any season)? Which on the list appeals to you most this winter? I am not a beach person but if I were to visit one during the winter then it would be somewhere in Florida. The Carolinas or Virginia beaches wouldn’t be warm enough to suit me.  Not having been to Texas then I can’t say how the winters are there but we did visit Naples Florida early spring when it was still a bit too chilly here and we loved the temps that far south.

3. What’s a song you’re embarrassed to know all the lyrics to? Are you really embarrassed or do just think you should be? These days, I don’t think I know all the lyrics to any song but if I did I don’t think I’d be embarrassed to admit that I did because very little embarrases me.

4. When you were a kid what’s something you thought would be fantastic as an adult, but now that you’re an adult you realize it’s not all that fantastic? Being grown up and while it has its perks, there are times I miss the worry-free life of a kid. You know the burdens moms and dads carried that we now find heaped on our shoulders? Yeah, you get it, right? I couldn’t understand just how good it was to be a kid even for a short time. Will kids ever learn to not wish their days away?

5. Share a quote you hope will inspire you in 2018.

Borrowed from BrainyQuote

6. Insert your own random thought here.  Last Friday, I shared the original picture with my SWF pals. I love to tinker and maniuplate to re-invent my photos, so I ran the image through the Brushstrokes app on my iPad and I liked the final project. What do you think? Unfortunately, I did not take note of the steps I used in my photo-art creation. 🙁

Have a good day and please join me tomorrow for Thursday2Q!

Alibris: Books, Music, & Movies

I born and raised in the Appalachian mountains of southern WV. I was a child bride when I married my high school sweetheart in 1979. We moved to Knoxville, TN to begin our life. Determined to prove nay-Sayers from our community wrong, I completed my education and went on to earn an A.S. in computer programming. From 1983-1987, I worked as a computer system’s manager. That’s a glorified title for someone who trouble shoots and maintains system back-ups. After the birth of our first child in 1988, I took early retirement. What have I been doing for the last 25+ years? I am proud to say, I am a SAHM and for most of those years I home-schooled our three children from K-12. Now, the nest is empty.

      Eugenia,

Yes, I did know that the Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze was filmed at Lake Lure. I mentioned it in my 2015 post. I believe the made for TV Dirty Dancing mini-series was shot in the western North Carolina mountains around Ashville, Cashiers, and Lake Lure during summer 2016. We missed catching some of the Hollywood action. We did watch it, though. This is supposedly the back story behind the hit film or at least that’s the impression I got from it. It was good but I preferred the movie version.

      Linda,

Thanks for dropping by. I prefer the mountains to the beach but it’s sure nice to see those distant sandy shores with crystal blue water lapping on the beach. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to sit in a lounge chair with the warmth of the sun kissing your skin and feel the sand between your toes about now? It sounds pretty darn good to me!

Hi Cathy, thank you for my lovely e-birthday card – such a nice surprise.
Your inspiring quote is wonderful and I think I need to put this in the front of my diary so that I can see it regularly.
Lake Lure looks so idyllic and I’m sure would be lovely to spend time there just enjoying the scenery. I love spending time near water as it always makes me feel calm.
Your manipulated picture has worked really well – very artistic.
Hope you have a lovely rest of your week.

      Pamela,

I like being by the water sometimes but I find total contentment in the mountains. That’s my go-to place for relaxing with DH. We all need to remind ourselves that each day is the best day yet and to find the good stuff swirled in with the bad. Life is too precious and short to not enjoy the moments at hand. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day, dearie!

The only one of those beaches I’ve been to is Hilton Head. I won a trip there when I was working for my long-term company, I guess because all the management guys have places there. I was underwhelmed, because I don’t golf, don’t sail, and I’m one of those pink people who burns if I sit in the sun too much. Still, it was a nice getaway. I remember I found a copy of The Great Gatsby in the room and read that, hoping to find the reference to his pink suit.

      John,

Resort communities like Hilton Head tailor to golfers. I don’t like the sport. It has to be just about the most boring one ever invented. I’m not a sun person, either. I don’t do tanning, like you I turn pink and then it looks like I hadn’t been in the sun at all. I remember my friends telling me, “You need a tan.” I said, “What do you mean? I do have a tan!” The only way to prove it was to reveal my swimsuit line but I wasn’t going to do that. I like the idea of being at the beach more than actually being on it. However, I really did enjoy our time in Naples but that was in late March. Our friends took us to one of their favorite spots where we sit up chairs to watch the sunset. It was a gorgeous evening. I even captured my toes with the ocean in the background. We had a lovely time!

I would love to visit this lake. Looks most inviting.

Hubby and I don’t care much for traveling anymore. To the boat and back. Driving is tiring for us.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday, Cathy. ♥

I love what you did with the photo, it would look great on a canvas. Nice to learn more about you, I didn’t know you had written a children’s book. Is it available anywhere?

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Ellen,

I’m not sure if it’s still in print. I really need to check with my publisher. If you’re interested in a copy, I have a few still on hand that I can send you one. Send me your address via email and I’ll get you one out. 😉

Very pretty lake, i’d love to visit, but as with beaches, not when it is cold! Right now you’d have to travel very far south in Florida to find a warm spot.

    • Cathy Kennedy

      Mimi,

Yeah I know many spots in Florida probably are too cool right now, too. I know whenever we experience a warming trend it’s usually either too much for Floridians or just right. It all depends on who you ask. Of course, the temps in anywhere that far south will be better than what we’re getting. It was 7º this morning. We got about 2″ of snow yesterday which made our streets very dangerous by bedtime. We slept in this morning so DH could see where’s going. You usually feel black ice before you see it. The biggest problem he’ll face is getting off the secondary roads, major arteries look good on various traffic cams around town. It’s going to be a chilly 25º for the high today but sunny all day starting at noonish. That’ll be nice!

💕I love comments! Have a purrfect day & thanks for stopping by!💕
